Can't edit follower in CK

Just trying to tweak a vanilla follower in the CK (slightly editing the face, hair and changing their stats, etc), but my changes are not showing in game.

 

I load up the Skyrim.esm and Update.esm in CK, make my changes to the follower and save the new esp, then put that esp at the bottom of my load order, start up my game and nothing... Still the same ol' follower. I've tried looking around for any answers but all I seem to find is posts about creating CUSTOM followers, not editing the existing ones.

 

So, am I doing it wrong? Is there anything else I need to do for my changes to work? Any tips or workarounds I can try for my changes to take place? :confused:
