Vagrant0
Hi, im just learning to photoshop and made some face textures as well as some weapon textures (weapons are for fallout tho) Im editing colour maps btw, not normals when I save as dds it ask me to save in a variaty of formats (RGB, DXT1, DXT3, blah blah blah), Im using CS2 with nvidia dds plugins installed, please help btw alpha channal should be off for colour maps right? In most cases, you'll want to save in DXT3 with alpha, no mipmaps. DXT1 has the lowest file size, but can cause some significant blurring of the texture, however it also allows one alpha layer over another to show properly.DXT3 is the better balance of file size and clarity.DXT5 makes the file much larger, so should only be used in rare occasions. The alpha layer controls how transparent something is. White is 100% opaque Black is 100% transparent. This only works if you have an alpha property on the mesh, but you should still plan accordingly. Files with an all white alpha should be used for most static texturing, files with white only where you have parts you are using should be used for clothing, armor, and weapon meshes where you have large spaces between parts of the texture you are using. Mipmaps are used to get a sort of level of detail for that item, for the most part, mipmaps are only a good idea on large statics since it can increase performance slightly when those statics are in the distance. Icons and most other things do not particularly benefit from having mipmaps, so having them is usually a needless addition to the file size.
