canisoftlykissu
hi i am not very computer smart and would like to ask a couple of questions, but first let me tell you my story. after hearing operation anchorage had been released i immediately set out to get it. after four hours of trying to find out where to buy microsoft points i was a wee bit frustrated. so i snatched my halo off my head threw it across the room and went searching for a pirated copy, found one clicked download and went to bed. well i woke up feeling quite guilty and decided i would try again to purchased it and on the first attempt instead of being redirected to the msn home shopping site (which i am almost positive doesn't sell microsoft points) i was sent to xbox live. woohoooooo! i crawled under my desk, found my halo, dusted it off and put it back on my head. i then spent two hours trying to find where the microsoft points were on this xbox live site, the only thing i found available were xbox live points. so i decided what the heck i will try to use the xbox live points to purchase the games for windows live version, the worst thing that could happen was i'd be out $12.50. and wouldn't you know it, it actually worked (would be nice if they would state that on their site) five minutes later it was downloaded and installed, woooooohooooooo! i popped in my fo3 disc clicked data files and it wasn't there, so i think maybe it is like a patch and i don't have to tick anything, started up the game, played about an hour and no radio signal. i spent the next 5 or 6 hours reading thru a million forums (ok it was probably closer to a hundred, but it sure felt like a million) only to find out that a whole lot of other folks are having the same problem (and it made me feel a whole lot better finding out i wasn't a complete computer know nothing idiot). apparently it is a big no no to put a gfwl dlc on the c drive and the original game on the d drive. so, i did what everyone else did, spent close to an hour searching my computer for my "local settings" folder (why do they hide folders, just to make me feel stupid?), and copied the 3 appropriate files to my fallout 3 data folder. launched the game, clicked data files and viola there it was (oh yes joy joy joy) tick it, started playing and about a minute later i got my radio signal (i actually got up out of my chair and did the extended version of my happy dance) sat back down, brought up my handy dandy pip boy and it isn't on my map (no no no no no no no). so i spent about an hour wandering the wasteland trying to find it (now i can't find my way out of a paper bag, how am i gonna find someplace that isn't on my map) back to the internet to find the location, back to the game, find the location but still doesn't show up on my map (even after entering the place). so, before i spend anymore time playing with my fingers crossed, hoping and praying that it doesn't ctd i would like to ask a couple of questions. remember, i am not that great with computers so these my be stupid question, but here goes 1. is it possible to reinstall gfwl and somehow direct it to install on my d drive? if that isn't possible... 2. can one of you INCREDIBLY talented folks make a mod or something that would somehow connect these two love birds? or... 3. will i have to go buy a bigger hard drive so that i can install fo3 on my c drive (i purposely had a small c drive installed because i was only gonna use it for my operating system, window xp, boy am i regretting that now)? thank you very much for any help or advice cheerssharyn
BadlyDrawnRhino
(i purposely had a small c drive installed because i was only gonna use it for my operating system, window xp, boy am i regretting that now)Don't regret that. It's actually safer to install Windows on a seperate partition than on one where, if it dies, will take all your data with it. Regret the fact that everyone who works at Microsoft seem to be completely idiotic and seem to think forcing you to keep everything on the one partition is a good idea. Also regret the fact that a lot of companies enable Microsoft by also putting all their data on C: (like how Fallout3 keeps all your savegame data in your My Documents folder. Seems quite a few games do that nowadays. What ever happened to simply keeping all the game data in the actual game folder?) Anyway, onto your actual problem. I pretty much did exactly as you did. Moved the DLC files into my Fallout3 data folder and opened them with the default launcher. I had no problems getting the radio signal, nor the map marker showing up for the quest. I've heard a few people had problems if they haven't patched to the latest version, so have you done that? Otherwise, I can't really help because I don't really know what else could be wrong. So I'll leave that to someone who actual knows what they're talking about. Just as a side note, and not to be rude or anything, but it might help in future if you split your post into paragraphs. No one likes a wall of text, because it's really easy to get lost while trying to scale it. Again, not rude, just a pointer.
canisoftlykissu
thank you very much for taking the time to reply if there have only been two patches then yes i do have them (the last one messed up my mouse speed, hope they fix that soon lol) i am not sure where to go to on my computer to check the version number, but i do know that i installed two patches. i was playing earlier today and went to rivet city (my first visit with this character) and all the merchants are outside the marketplace on the deck of the ship. when i try to trade with them i get a ctd. i did move the merchants inside (using console commands) but the next day they are out on the deck again. i searched around but cannot find anyone else who has had this happen to them, and i have no other ideas on how to fix it. so if i am gonna have to start over again i might just as well reinstall to the c drive first. i have a couple of games and programs on my c drive that i can uninstall and move to my d drive. so i am going to do that and then install fo3 on the c drive. it will be a bit time consuming but it if it will make things work right i guess it's worth it (i got laid off so i got nothing but time on my hands anyway) cheerssharyn ps. thank you for the tip, i tried to read thru my first post and lost my place a couple of times too.
