Lore: Sovngarde, Dragonborn and Races. Hole in the plot?

(OH DAMN! I just realized this may spoil the game for people... I should've created this topic at the other section... )

*Don't open the Spoiler box if you haven't played through the vanilla main campaign yet*

I was thinking....

Sovngarde is the after life place for brave NORDS right? That's why we don't see a single hero from other races there. Every single person in Sovngarde is a nord.

For example...

If the Stormcloaks lost the civil war before you enter Sovngarde you'll be able to see Ulfric there. Right?

And what happens if the Empire had lost the civil war? You'll see Legate Rikke there. Why not General Tullius? Because he isn't a Nord.

With that said... I just realized one thing...

No matter what race you choose. The heros of Sovngarde will say their farewells saying they will be waiting for you to return there when your time comes.

Is this a hole in the plot?

After all... As the Wiki says, Sovngarde is the resting place for Nords. It doesn't make sense to wait for an Argonian soul to show up there.

Not exactly a hole in the plot, but just shows you the expected "canonical" race of the Dragonborn. Kinda like how in that Star Wars game from 2002 about Revan. The player can choose a female or male character, but canonically, the character is male (you're supposed to be Revan in the lore). In Skyrim, the default race is Nord, in Oblivion it was an Imperial, and Morrowind had a Dark Elf IIRC.

maybe they mean you'll pop in for a visit?

Oh no... it's clear in the conversation that they are talking about after your die. It's probably what Chan Chan pointed out.... a limitation of the game. They couldn't create the ramifications of the plot considering all the playable races, so in general they molded the plot to the "default" race of the TESV : The nords.

You're probably right.

I wonder though... They took great care with the racial deal with minor things (Like Orc camps trusting Orc players right away).

A single dialogue of Tsun like:

"This may be the last time you walk among Sovngarde, Dragonborn, for these lands are meant to be the resting place of the people with Norden blood.

Perhaps, Shor will open an exception for a favorite of Akatosh such as yourself. If such opportunity becomes granted to you, know that it would be an honor to feast by your side here in the Hall of Valor. "

Would be more than enough. It would apply to every non-nord race.

But I can understand Bethesda... they have 1 million things to take care when developing a huge game such as Skyrim. So it's reasonable for them to overlook this kind of thing.

well the ebony knight is a redguard looking to go to sovngarde.. so there is that

but i have the theory that the last dragonborn is in fact the avatar of Ysmir aka Talos, meaning his soul is actually the soul of a nord dragongod .. no matter the selected race .. just like the neveradine was the reincarnation of neverar

well thats just a theory anyway :3

more likely this was just an oversight lol

Heh... Hehe.. Shor making an exception for a Dragonborn won of Akatosh... That'd be something to see. Aka is the one who murdered him, cut out his heart and imprisoned him in the underworld. I'm surprised they even let you in.

It's also incorrect to say the Dragonborn is related to Talos...Talos was not Ysmir, he used his agreement with Wulfhearth to trick the greybeards. Wulfhearth was Hamid, so only 1/3rd of Talos is Ysmir... Talos is also more a Cyrodiilic God than a Nordic one, despite the ban.

As for Sovngarde, no, it is not the afterlife for brave Nords. It is the afterlife for those who die adhering to a very specific code of ethics and practices. You do not have to be a Nord to enter, you just have to be brave and live your life according to a certain philosophy. The population of Sovngarde is overwhelmingly Nord because that philosophy is part of their core culture, not because there is a race requirement for entry.

I don't know much of the lore... but there are several places pointing that Sovngarde is the Nord afterlife.

Elder Scrolls Wikia: http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Sovngarde_(Location)

Tamriel Foundry: http://tamrielfoundry.com/topic/afterlife-of-races/ (Points a few exceptions to the "Nord only" rule... but still, it maintains the point that in general Sovngarde is for Nords)

I tried find a huge topic on a Lore discussion forum about TES after life to post here (I didn't find today anymore), in which the overall line of thought in the topic was that the Afterlife can have 5 paths.

1) A daedric plane (If you worshiped a daedric lord)

2) Soul Cairn (If you were soul trapped.... whatever was left ends up in the Cairn)

3) Dreamsleeve (It's pretty much a quick pitstop before your memory gets wiped and you reincarnate into something else)

4) Sovngarde (Mainly nords)

5) Nirn (Some spirits stay at Nirn.... be them good or bad)
