Skyrim won't start with Dawnguard.esm - desktop crash.

Hello there,

 

Since today's morning I have a problem with launching Skyrim. Once the Bethesda logo appears, the game crashes. I already did a little research to see which mod is causing this crash and unfortunately for me, it is Dawnguard.esm file. Every other mod is fine and working. So when I turn my Dawnguard.esm file off, the game works perfectly well as it always used to, but once I tick it and play with it the game crashes after Bethesda's logo appears.

 

If this would help, I installed Dawnguard about 4 months ago or so and since then I had no trouble with either launching the game or expriencing any in-game bug.

I am completely new to stuff like BOSS, Wrye Bash etc so I apologize in advance if the problem is too obvious and I do not see it.

So what do I have to do in order to launch Skyrim and being able to play with Dawnguard DLC?

 

I would be very thankful for every good advice and I accept criticism as long as it has a good point.

I just noticed that Skyrim (with Dawnguard.esm) is available to play and does not crash upon launching when I change the Steam language to English.

But I'd rather play in my own language. I hope that this little information will help.

 

I am very thankful for every help so please feel free to share your opinions on how to solve this problem.

Honestly, I have looked at this multiple times but I dont seem to figure this out;

Maybe it's creating havoc because you have mods that are not translated to your own language and you get some language mismatches?! (never heard about it crashing the game tho, just messing with names). That would be my best guess. For compatibility's sake I would suggest to switch your whole game to English, far less issues and no need to wait for someone to translate a mod to your language, or to spend the time yourself to translate everything.

Perhaps you need to verify game files in Steam?

Have you tried very simple things, like rebooting the system?

If your game doesn't launch with only Skyrim.esm, Update.esm and Dawnguard.esm something is wrong...

 

Maybe try and check this file: %userprofile%\AppData\local\Skyrim\plugins.txt

 

See if your load order is correct in there and Skyrim.esm is not duplicated

I have put my mods in the right load order, verified files in steam, also tried to move my Dawnguard.esp and .esm from the folder and verifiy it to get clear ones, did not work either.

All of my mods are either downloaded with Czech translation or I translated it myself in Creation Kit (just simple armor and weapons mods) I don't think that would have any influence on the game. I basically edited already existing mod.

I was about to re-install Dawnguard itself. I have 2 save files right now. One is Nord probably 40lvl with finished Dawnguard quest line and all about it. Second one is Khajiit with no quest completed for Dawnguard. I do not play Nord save file anymore so I was thinking about deleting Dawnguard like a whole DLC and installing it again, would not matter to me if I would lose everything that came from Dawnguard on Nord save file. One person actually adviced me to re-install Dawnguard but I don't know how :0

Oh yeah and about the Language options, I play Skyrim for a year and half now with Czech language and I got so used to that once I tried to play in English for a couple minutes, it felt like a completely different game to me, lol. The only and easiest way to solve my problem right now is to set Skyrim to English language and adapt to it, which I would hardly do.

 

If I would know how to delete and install Dawnguard back on again I would do that. Would put my save files out of the folder (just in case, I am paranoic) to the desktop and delete skyrim from steam library and reinstall it. I got my Dawnguard from a store with a code card in it, so would be here any way to reinstall it?

EDIT: I just checked the %userprofile%\AppData\local\Skyrim\plugins.txt now and also the mods that are plugged in the game and I do not see Skyrim.esm and Update.esm file. How could it disappear? Maybe and I am pretty sure that it would be the problem.

My question is that am I be able to get Skyrim.esm and Update.esm? I already re-installed the game and verified game files but after I double checked I am pretty sure that my Skyrim.esm and update.esm are gone. Would downloading these files make my Skyrim pirate?

Skyrim.esm and Update.esm dont have to be in plugins.txt for the game to work. Everything else must be there...

Some people had issues with NMM adding Skyrim.esm twice into the plugins file causing trouble, that's why I asked to check

 

To reinstall Dawnguard you just delete the Dawnguard DLC files from the Skyrim\Data folder and redownload from steam. There is no other reinstall procedure for a DLC... you have already done that...

 

 

As I said, your game should at least launch with only Skyrim.esm, Plugins.esm and Dawnguard.esm activated in your load order... Dawnguard had massive (really massive) issues on release, and quests break often (I never had 1 single bugfree runthrough of Dawnguard, I dont think anyone has). But it should open at least :\ I am unable to find related issues on google with non-english installations.

 

Perhaps you could try Bethesda, they might be able to answer the question better: http://support.bethsoft.com/form.php?l=en

Make sure you mention that the game without mods and only Skyrim.esm, Update.esm and Dawnguard.esm does not start and you're using the Czech version.

 

I have no experience with any non-English software (though I'm not native English at all - just I strongly prefer anything related to computers to be in English)

EUREKA! IT WORKS!

 

You're right, I just read that Skyrim.esm and Update.esm are hidden so the player would not move them, edit them or something. Since my first Dawnguard playthrough my only issue as far as I remember was entering the Dawnguard Fortress, it crashed upon entering but I solved that. Everthing else was fine.

Anyway I just tried to start the game again only with Dawnguard.esm active to be really sure before I contact Bethesda's support and guess what, the game started! So I activated other mods (starting the game several times, each time with more mods). I don't know why or how but I put it every mod I used to play (with maybe even more, lol) and the game loads with no problém. I only noticed a bit longer loading time between pressing "PLAY" button and the game actually starting and appearing in tab. But a few seconds longer delay is completely fine to me now :cool:

 

So the game works super fine now, I tried my saves and the game loads them without any problem. I am not really sure why it works from like day to day but maybe because I tried so many things, everthing that included CTD's and Dawnguard.esm errors but I never restarted the pc after doing anything. Maybe all I needed was a PC restart? Or the steam downloaded the missing files/new files when I was dreaming what it was like when I played Skyrim?

 

Either way I am glad you took your time to help me as you were the only person here to respond to me. If there is any way I can pay you back tell me, I heard something about Kudos?

I've run the Boss program and am getting a warning message on a few of the mods.Message says this plug in has a file extension esp,but its file header is marked as an esm.There is no esm file.How can I add those files?.Would greatly appreciate your help.thanks.

ok i have the same problem with my skyrim only i have the game of the year edition , so would i have to re download my game from steam ???
