fiber optics are used primarily on cable runs over 100 feet, as this is the point at which noise is introduced into ya norm cat 5 cable.

the how, like most data cable, it's a high-stream of bit data.  with cat 5, it's usuall +12v or 0, with fiber optics, it's light or no light, true or false.

one can actually shine a led light into a fiber optic and the light is visually will be present at the other end.
