Hickory Posted July 23, 2013 Share Posted July 23, 2013 Another thing I did not find the answer either (I admit I didn't thoroughly search yet, just thinking about it while typing): it never occured to me then, but my Better Cities was 5.2.6, the Better Cities Ressources (or maybe Permanent ressources?) was 4.9.0, and the third file was another file version as well. All downloaded here at Nexus. I noticed the new versions all had the same version number (5.3.3), does that have an influence?Well of course it makes a difference! You cannot mix and match different versions and expect them to work without issues. :facepalm:Download BC from the Nexus, and download the patches from the Nexus, too. If you read the description page of BC it states: "Main Files are REQUIRED! That means that you need to download them all!Updates are REQUIRED! That means that you need to download them all!" SamFisher18 Posted July 23, 2013 Author Share Posted July 23, 2013 So, all files were downloaded from the Nexus and on the same day, which is why I thought it was normal that the versions were different. Better Cities was 5.2.6, Better Cities Permanent Resources was 4.9.0, and Better Cities Resources was 5.2.4a. Those three files were the only ones available at the time here, and the Better Cities wiki was redirecting to the Nexus anyway. As for now, I believe there are four files (including one Hotfix), all of them 5.3.3, except permanent ressources, which is 5.3.0. I did not blame too much Better Cities when I had those crashes, as I tried to install Open Cities Reborn (on a clean install without BC of course), and my game would still crash in Anvil. I thought the problem was from Anvil, and that I would just stay away form this city, but again, the above mentioned situation in Bravil proved me wrong. Anyway, this was just a quick update regarding the versions of Better Cities. I reinstalled the game last night, and I need to reinstall the mods (without QTP, Bomret, Streamline, and OBGE), and see what happens. I'll come back once done (might take a few days, as it seems that working on getting a stable Oblivion running "is not a valid excuse to not show up at work!"... :sad: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

So, after some research, I found some people complaining about QTP, and I downloaded another version, to test, as they were saying they were having far less CTDs with it.I did a complete reinstall, being extra super careful with what I install, when, and how. Result is: crash on the Bethesda logo now, and I'm completely clueless regarding what it could be (I think it may be UL, so I will try tomorrow without UL, as I said before, I think UL is incompatible with the new Better Cities 5.3.3 unfortunately). Not very useful with Streamline save, but I was crashing so often that I decided to use it. I uninstalled Streamline, and still experienced the same problem (CTD on Bethesda logo). I took a look at the Oblivion.ini file, and since it looked unfamiliar (no ipreloadsizelimit for example), I deleted it (I hadn't touched it at all after that new install). The game started (main screen), I started a new game, and got a CTD during the loading... I'm going a little further than before, but still can't play... bben46 Posted July 30, 2013 Share Posted July 30, 2013 First guess, you have the old mod still active.Next, when you add a new mod, it will be added to the end of the load order and not in the same place the old one was. Have you run BOSS since you made that change? Streamline is an old program that was never really finished. The author vanished from all game sites with no notice or warning. It was still one of the best utility mods for slower computers available. It allowed me to play Oblivion on a computer that before Streamline was showing 20-25 FPS most of the time, and 5 to 10 FPS in combat - virtually unusable. My FPS went to around 25 to 40 and up to over 20 most of the time in combat. Barely useable. I continued using it with my new build until I realized that it was reducing any distant view of things and NPCs when moving. And was capping my FPS to a lower value than really needed. It does have some problems with newer faster computers. But there are some features (such as the auto save) that can still be used. Because of the kind of changes it makes it should always be disabled for troubleshooting as it can mask some problems. Crashing at the logo is often a missing master - or not starting using OBSE when a mod requires it. Here is a link to the Oblivion section of my troubleshooting blog. I use mostly the Steamsave feature. I uninstalled it here to troubleshoot, and as I stated, it didn't change anything unfortunately. Why was the Oblivion.ini funky? I don't know, but after deleting it, the game launched (but crashed on the first loading after clicking on "Start new game"). I install all my mods using either OBMM (for omods) or Wrye Bash (I create BAIN friendly archive when not immediately available for download). I believe (but may be wrong) that my install order in BAIN (and in general) is correct. I also believe that I use the proper mods and patches (but I'm definitely wrong, otherwise the game would run). Wry Bash detects no conflicts. I run BOSS after every installed mods, and rebuild the patch. WHen something goes wrong, I usually reinstall from the beginning, to avoid messing it up some more. I literaly spent more than 100 hours trying to install and make Oblivion work. The not starting problem started when I switched to the new version of Better CIties. I will try maybe tonight to uninstall Unique Landscapes ( :sad:) and all patches, and see how it goes. I switched to that new version of BC as I had most (all) of my CTDs happening in cities (Anvil or Bravil, impossible to play, with a crash every 2-3 minutes). If you see anything in my load order that shouldn't be there, or anything that is missing, please let me know, as I said, I'm completely clueless regarding what could be missing, even though I spent roughly 2-3 hours a day trying to make this work and gathering information online since late April. :mellow: Thanks y'all for your time! :smile: Edit: It's the Steam GOTY version. SamFisher18 Posted August 2, 2013 Author Share Posted August 2, 2013 Update on the situation: I reinistalled (again). I think I found the cuprit(s): QTP3 and OBGE. I played with Vanilla textures, everything was fine. I installed QTP3, then experienced some crashes. I replaced it with QTP3 Redimized, and crashed only once after 30 minutes (in Anvil, where I would normally crash within 5 minutes). I also experienced a weird 'crash'. I was randomly walking, and then my fps dropped to 1 frame every 5-10 seconds. I eventually managed to press esc and exit the game (got a crash on exit), and everything was fine afterwards. I should have saved before exiting to see if the problem would still be there.I had another crash, when waiting, but nothing to bad. I eventually reinstalled OBGE (I really like OBGE liquid water, and wanted to try other effects), but the game crashed in Bravil within a few minutes (was working fine before). I replaced it with Enhanced Waters. If you have any advice regarding OBGE, I have a GTX 560m, with 3GB VRAM, and DX11, so it should not be a problem to run the shaders. As for BC and UL. I reinstalled BC first, played the game. No problem. I reinstalled all UL except the one that had known issues with BC (and my other mods: Castle Seaview, Hoarfrost Castle, AFK Weye, and MMM), and tested. Worked just fine.I then installed the UL that conflicts with BC (and the relevant patches); again, everything went fine.Eventually, I reinstalled all ULs (except Cliffs of Anvil, as it conflicts with both MMM and Castle Seaview, and I couldn't find a patch for both of them), and again, just fine. Finally, regarding the initial topic of this thread: it really does seem that the lockpick issue was from corrupted saveS. As for what corrupted the saves, I do not know, and probably never will. Just need to fix OBGE now, and then, finally, ENJOY THE GAME! :) P.S. During one of the reinstall, I installed OOO 1.35, followed the procedure in the readmes (to make it work with MMM), the game wouldn't start. I didn't want OOO too much, so it's not a problem for me, but still.
