Adding custom ambient music and ActiveMovie Window

Recommended Posts

Hi-ho everyone,

Some time ago (after I installed the EVE mod together with the Songs for EVE ambient tracks) I read, that it is possible to add your own .MP3 files to the different music folders without having to replace the default ambient music. Worked perfectly fine for me with "Songs for EVE" , however I decided afterwards to add a couple of other tracks. The strange thing is, in seemingly random situations the game minimizes itself and a black window named "ActiveMovie Window" appears. After that, I´m unable to open the game again and I have to restart it. This kind of crash happens most of the time at the beginning of a battle, when the battle music is about to play. As most of my custom music is in my Battle folder, I assume, that it has something to do with the custom tracks I´ve added. After I deleted those, it worked fine again. I read on other forums, that the ActiveMovie Window has something to do with the Windows Media Player, but I don´t know what exactly.

Some points that might be of interest: I am currently using Windows 7 [64-bit], WMP [12.0.7601.18150} , the Free Youtube to MP3 Converter [v. 3.12.20 build 1230] ; also, the converted .MP3s are High Quality Joint Stereo.

If anyone has any further advice or solutions, I would highly appreciate it. :psyduck:

hey...i really like your writing style -> you get an A+

it's like we are talking....

~

that being said...

i have to question why you're using media player at all

it's not that it's a bad program

it's because it's always trying to dominate your PC

you could do the same thing with winamp (free)

and maintain a Mp3 section right on your desktop of EVE favs

then, you can just alt tab to desktop.... and click one when wanted ....or

I'm thinking the media player uses way too many resources

just some idea's for ya .....to ponder or try

in windows mode: for example, you can RUN your winamp player

off of your taskbar.... keeping that music out of the game but still

within reach

First of all, thanks for your positive notice. Always appreciated.

As with the Media Player etc., I´m not even sure if it actually influences the ambient Music folders. Does the game resort to my current player or does it use something built-in when playing ambient music?

And for your idea to choose the individual tracks manually, that would be a bit inconvenient, considering that I´d have to switch between dungeon, wasteland and city music constantly (with battle music in between). Though that method works well with Minecraft, where I merely use two playlists (one for cave exploration and one for everything else). I´m still guessing, that it has something to do with the way my .MP3s were converted. Otherwise why should the EVE ones work, but my own ones not? And I´ve read posts about People having over 350 custom added ambients. Maybe I´d try something different than High Quality Joint Stereo for actual in-game tracks.

check this thread out http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1491317-active-movie-window-ctd/

It is an odd problem and I have read that the solution has to do with some missing codex however there are some other possibilities posted in the linked thread. One thing is for sure; it will not happen if your pipboy radio is turned off. Also check to see what programs may be running in the background using msconfig http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/using-system-configuration#1TC=windows-8

I know it says that msconfig is for win8 but it really is used in win7 and winXP too. If you see anything running in the background related to fallout 3 then turn it off. (Except the autosave.exe if you see it.)

Other than that, you are on your own. I have seen this rare bug talked about on other gaming forums with other games too. I have never seen a confirmed permanent satisfactory solution so umm... good luck and post a follow-up if you find one. [PM me the solution too please <(o_o)>

~Cheers

Solved! Yay. So I have had the same problem and have been researching this for a while. I have always known it was a codec issue and now that has been confirmed. It is related to the radio stuttering issue and an improper game set up.

The quick fix is found on this thread http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/155384-pipboy-radio-music-is-not-working/ and my post #8 has the links to the solution.

I have had no problem for 2 weeks now and it has also improved the games overall performance. Case in point; 3 hour gaming session listening to GNR and only 1 crash that was unrelated to the Active Movie Window pop up crash.

This was the thread that solved it for me; http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/897990-codec-investigation-project/

Edit: Can't believe I forgot this part;

As we already know this tool InstalledCodec can deactivate any codec but you have to do this blindly HOWEVER...

You can determine exactly which codec may be causing the problem by using http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ (freeware). Install it, load a MP3 file, render it with the MS A/V buttons at the bottom of the window. Button 1 will display what codec is being used - the middle item. Button 2 will play the file, if you can hear it play then the codec is working. If you can't hear the file play then you may have found the problem, the middle item in the list at the bottom of the window is the codec that is in use. You can use the "InstalledCodec" application to disable that codec, then reload the codecs in GSpot and try again until you find the codec that may be the problem. :nuke:
