TESV AppCrash - Can't start game

So I've been playing for a few weeks with a few issues here and there, but none so far I couldn't fix. All the articles about this particular issue are different, with different causes and solutions, which makes it difficult to find the right one.

Leading up to the tragedy:

Last I was playing Skyrim before bed, started closing out of the game, the game was off my screen, and as I started to close the screen my dog pulled out the power wire suddenly shutting off my computer. I didn't think much of it really.

The tragedy (haha):

Today I tried to play the game. I click on the Skyrim: SKSE launcher like always, it plays most of the Bethesda intro but will suddenly stop and show a windows error asking to look for a solution online or close the program.

Here is the info:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: TESV.exe
Application Version: 1.9.32.0
Application Timestamp: 51437ce5

Fault Module Name: steam.dll ---------->> The 'Fault module name' changes each time. It's been steam.dll, xAudio2.dll, and one other I can't remember correctly...something like gameoverlayrender.dll

Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 53875e9a
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 00061dc0
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: 0a9e
Additional Information 2: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789
Additional Information 3: 0a9e
Additional Information 4: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789

What I have tried:
*restarting computer

*restarting game

*run as administrator

*changed privilege to administrator

*restore previous game version (back 1 day)

*restore previous computer version (back 3 days, I had not changed or added anything besides playing recently)

*launched from steam (works but obviously it screws up all my mods without SKSE)

*launched from right click, 'test compatibility' (went to the game menu but I didn't try loading a saved game, so not sure how it effected the mods)

*changed audio settings to 24 bit / 44100 Hz (after this it no longer even loads the screen and plays the Bethesda intro, only the little black box at the corner and then the same error message)

*changed audio to 16 bit / 44100 Hz (the black screen comes up right before the Bethesda intro, but the error message still pops up before it even starts playing)

*ran steam's 'verify integrity of game cache' (says '1 file failed to validate and will be reacquired' ...didn't change the error message and there's no info to view which file...grr)

*reinstalled SKSE, no change

*uninstalled-reinstalled Steam and Skyrim (nothing)

*reinstalled, reactivated all mods (now it just CTD's in the middle of the Bethesda logo...no warning window...now the CTD happens no matter what I try to launch the game from)

Now I am just WTF...

UPDATE, huge improvement:

Installed and ran TES5Edit through masters and load order. Now I can load up Skyrim normally but as I go in game I get a warning saying I'm using an outdated SKSE...which I know for a fact I am not. I'll go back and try to fix that see if it's any better. Meh...*cries*...I just wanted to play my game. (lol, frustrating). I will update after that.

Try ...Reinstalling SKSE.....as you say...""*launched from steam (works but obviously it screws up all my mods without SKSE)""

I honestly didn't think of that.

I reinstalled it. No change. Same windows warning and same issue details.

  • 1 month later...

Ok. This is weird.

I also started having a CTD when trying to play Skyrim, as of 9/7. I was playing it that night, trying to fix a problem I was having getting from Solstheim to Skyrim (common problem apparently for modders), and I ended up using coc Whiterun.

The following day I try booting up the game again, and it fails. However, my computer did a complete/proper power-down cycle the previous night, so no interrupted power supply on shutdown or anything.

So far, the Fault Modules have been either steam.dll or steam2.dll, (edit, and now gameoverlayrenderer.dll) the type has been an APPCRASH, the crashee being TESV.exe.

Regarding SKSE:

Had been playing without issue using the last alpha release of SKSE (v1.7a iirc) up until the first crash on startup. I went to the SKSE website, to check if there was a new version anyway, which there was (v1.7.1 public), and installed that. Still the same APPCRASH.

Ok. Just tried launching the game again, and now add another dll to the list:

  Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
  Application Name: TESV.exe
  Application Version: 1.9.32.0
  Application Timestamp: 51437ce5
  Fault Module Name: gameoverlayrenderer.dll
  Fault Module Version: 2.31.73.18
  Fault Module Timestamp: 53beb29b
  Exception Code: c000001d
  Exception Offset: 00041dc0
  OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
  Locale ID: 2057
  Additional Information 1: 0a9e
  Additional Information 2: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789
  Additional Information 3: 0a9e
  Additional Information 4: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789

On a hunch, I just tried running the game without SKSE loaded, and I managed to get to the main menu. Didn't bother loading a save, as without SKSE, they probably wouldn't load. So, it may be a SKSE issue.

If I get more ideas, or run more troubleshooting, I'll let you know.

I did eventually end up re-installing everything - from steam, to nexus, to individual mods, and skse. I also ran the TES5edit. After all that it works even with all my saved games. I'm not sure what was wrong or how it got fixed, but I can play my game normally and the biggest loss was my husband who was a mod...but he's still in game, just as his default character. I don't know if this information will help you, I hope your issue gets fixed. ^_^;;

Probably final update:

Turns out it was a mod related issue, though not SKSE's fault. One of the .dll files it was trying to load decided to die for some reason, apparently it could be a python coding issue. Found potential fixes for this issue elsewhere. I think it is odd that it would just suddenly fail, as I hadn't touched that .dll since I started this playthrough. Anyways.

Original post:

Mmm. It might help me troubleshoot. Although the length you went to suggest to me that there was just a critical failure with a/some file(s). Possibly forcing steam to redownload some files may help, we'll see. Regardless, thanks for the update.
