[LE] Editing existing normal maps.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

For quite some time I've been trying modify tangent space normal maps for a mod I'm working on using Gimp.

I've come across many tutorials on how to create new normal maps, but not one on how to modify an existing normal map that I've extracted.

Does anyone know how to edit a tangent space normal map or do you know of any tutorials I could try?

Thank you in advance.

Makes no sense for me to edit normal maps. Takes way too long. If the diffuse or specular dds file looks good without seams it's better to create the normal map new. Use this tool: https://boundingboxsoftware.com/materialize/. It's easy, fast and normal maps will be awesome.

Workflow: Save the diffuse or specular map as tga or bmp file. Open that file with Materialize. Create a heightmap. Create normal map from heightmap. Save the normal map. Show full material or delete the height map, if you don't need it. Save as bmp or tga. Open in Photoshop or Gimp and save again as dds. Ready. If you become familiar with that software, creating process is the best and fastest I know of.
