I stopped using vertibirds at all because it is (one of the ocean of things on this game that are) extremely annoying. Why suddently EVERY SINGLE COMMONWEALTH CREATURE feels an urge to attack a f***ing heavy armed gunship when it is passing above them? Why it has to have so retarded flying paths so it flies above my settlements, triggering workshop script and thus causing assigned settlers to reassign and glitch all over? Why it has only one side gun when almost all spawns happen in the opposite direction? Can't believe how retarded vertibirds functionality was designed.
