Making extent of interior cell fit exterior appearance

I'm currently trying to actually create something in the GECK but I already face the first problem regarding interior/exterior cells. What is the best workflow to create an interior cell that actually fits the exterior appearance of a unique shaped building? I don't want to accidently create a magic building that has far more interior space as actually would fit in it.

 

The only I could currently think of (due to the lack of experience with this) is to put interior walls and such in the exterior cell building and copy it into an interior cell. That sounds far to complicated to be best practice though.

 

Hope someone can help me out with this :P

The way I do it in Oblivion, when the interior is built of small pieces and not huge chunks (so that it actually is possible to make the interior a custom shaped one) is this:

  • paste a copy of the exterior walls in the interior cell
  • using simple, long objects (wood planks are handy in Oblivion) to mark the boundaries of the exterior walls, floors, roofs and all that, without obscuring the sight too much
  • hide the exterior walls somehow, and use the planks (or other long objects) to make sure the walls and floors and such go in approximately the right place

That could be one idea, and doing it that way (instead of building interior in the exterior worldspace) would probably be easier on the Creation Kit, too, and accidentally moving something unrelated would happen less often. For the hiding part, to get the exterior walls out of the way every now and then, you could look into the new layers system or such. I have not yet done any building in Fallout 4, so that is all I could think of at the moment.

After you're finished with the outside bits, copy the references and paste them into your interior cell from the menu (Edit → copy render, paste render).

 

Use object snapping to selected references, or Snap to Reference under the Movement tab in the render window preferences box if the exterior is off-axis.

Although not as abundant as in previous games there's still some exterior houses in the CK you can use as references.

 

Also, the exteriors often tend to be built unrealisticly small, so I think it's often good to up the size a bit for the interiors. If the exterior is a 3x3 it could work with 4x4 for the interior. It's also possible to not use a whole wall length, so it'll be like 3,5 x 3,5.

 

Some of the Solitude houses in Skyrim have way larger interiors than exteriors, so in my book it's perfectly OK to "cheat" and deviate slightly from the exterior so that the interior works better as an interior.
