Main quest line (early) weirdly lagging

I'm looking for a bit of advice, please.

 

I have the weirdest of lags in the main quest around Riverwood and Whiterun. The main players take up to a minute to move forward in each quest segment.

 

For example: Hadvar arrives at Alvor's in Riverwood. They spend 60 seconds just staring at each other before the next stage triggers.

Huldra takes forever to show me to my room in the Bannered Mare. Two minutes!

In Whiterun, Irileth runs to her troops, but stops to play an idle for 45 seconds before moving a bit more, and stopping again.

But side-quests like Amren's sword run smoothly. All other interactions are fine.

 

Now this strikes me as hideous script lag BUT the rest of the game flows on and around smoothly, with plenty of good FPS in 40-60 range. NPCs come and go, my companions chat as normal, weather changes. There's no staggering FPS, no freezes or anything.

 

What I am really asking is if those in the know can confirm it is likely to be script lag rather than something else :ohmy: . If it's lag, I'll go and deal with it. I have plenty of big mods and I can knock some heavy mods out like Maids Deception II which is a script-dense mod.

 

But I'd like to know if I am looking in the right direction first, and there is not some insidious little gremlin at work here. I have played plenty of heavily laden games, but never seen anything like this.

 

By the way, the game's all Looted, Bashed, etc. Timescale was 8 but I'm back to 20 as part of problem solving Papyrus shows I'm getting in-game stack overflows which are from Skybirds and from Animated Pro-you-know-what. But they are likely a symptom rather than the actual problem.

But the save game script cleaner shows no stacks get stuck into the save, no broken scripts, and usually around 6 active scripts in the save.

Update - I ran Elephant's script latency test (off Oldrim - works fine for a one-off). Found I had way too much average latency, so it's script lag. Dumping game. Roll-eyes, start again...
