Landsmeet duel bug

I ran into a bug during Landsmeet duel with Loghain. Whenever I choose any character to fight him I always end up with my whole party fighting him, and when he reaches 0 HP he becomes invincible. I tried restoring earlier saves, removing mods and using console cheats to kill him or move around various plot points, but nothing helps. The only thing that helps is to restore a very old save game (from before the Urn of Sacred Ashed quest) and using console commands to move to the Landsmeet plot point. The mods that I had installed are:

- Dragon Age Redesigned

- Leliana -- Realistic DAO Project

- Alistair-- Realistic DAO Project

- Dragon Age Rules Fixpack

Removing ALL mods did not fix the problem. After I encountered the bug I installed Qwinn's Ultimate DAO Fixpack but it didn't help either. I've found numerous mentions of this bug via Google, but no way to fix this. Is there any way to fix this or just skip the fight with Loghain? Any help will be appreciated!

I have to admit that I never ran into that particular bug. Unfortunately, the outcome of the duel with Loghain affects the endgame, as in who rules and/or who marries. So, there's no way to reasonably skip the duel. If you lost the Landsmeet vote, there is a brawl in the Landsmeet chamber. The Dragon Age Wiki does say that if you are playing on an XBox and you skip through the dialogue too quickly, you can bug the scene, but I can't find another bug reported with that scene in the vanilla game on a PC.

What you might try is removing any mods that affect gameplay or dialogue before you go to Denerim for the Landsmeet. If you remove them after you're in Denerim, then it seems that it's too late to undo any effects they have on the quest. I'm afraid this is the best advice I can offer.

I've tried removing all mods and loading a save I made before doing any quests in Denerim (though it is possible that I had briefly visited the market district at that point), but the bug still occurred. I also tried to copy the save file to my girlfriends laptop who has a different edition of the game, but it didn't help. Guess my only option is to try and mess around with the Dragon Age Toolset, if I can get it to work. Thanks for the advice anyway :)

OP. the only mod you've listed that would affect gameplay at all is the Rules fix pack... all the others are morphs and textures, which don't touch combat, plot flags, scripts, or dialog.

Installing another fixpack mid game is unlikely to help, and may break other things, depending on how the fixes are implemented.

And you can't actually 'kill' Loghain during the duel; he is 'immortal' in that situation. When his health reaches 0, a scripted cutscene is supposed to trigger. As to why your entire party joins in... as with the cutscene, the solo combat is a scripted mechanism... something seems to be interfering with Landsmeet-related scripts working.

Unfortunately, it's possible that whatever is causing the issue may have been 'baked into' your save the moment you set foot in Denerim, which makes troubleshooting especially difficult.

Have you ever had any other mods installed (for previous playthroughs or to try something out)? If so, what were they and how were they installed/uninstalled? (Certain mod removal methods can leave behind files, with unexpected and potentially game-breaking results.)

Have you used the toolset at all? If so, did you (a) first create and work in a new, custom module, so as to avoid editing the actual games files, and (b) check your export directories for toolset-related garbage files that may have been 'stealth' exported?

And the only other thing I can think of is that sometimes skipping dialog (by using the ESC key) can cause weird plot-flag related issues.

I haven't even installed the toolset before and this is my first playthrough. I also tried not skipping anything with ESC key. I just re-enabled all mods, loaded the oldest save file that is unaffected by this bug, traveled to Denerim and triggered the Landsmeet via console. The duel worked properly and I noticed a difference - there is an additional cutscene right before the duel where the crowd disperses and the characters get ready to fight - that cutscene doesn't play in the corrupted save files. This must be some plot choice that I made that affects this issue. While searching for the issue on Google I noticed that someone mentioned that saving the Arl of Redcliffe is what triggers this bug, but there must be something else that needs to be done in order to make it happen...

Hmm... there's no way to have the Landsmeet without curing Arl Eamon, so I'm not sure how saving him could cause the bug. (Maker knows I've regularly wished for a way to send him to meet his Maker...)

Thanks for the additional information, re your install and toolset (non-)use, though I continue to be flummoxed as to what could be the cause... your mod list is REALLY lite, and doesn't include anything apart from the fixpack that affects gameplay. (I did search the comments for that mod to see if anything like your situation had been reported there, and there wasn't anything mentioned, over the many years since the fixpack was released.)

If you had a lot of gameplay mods installed I'd suspect it was something like the EventManager bug was preventing the cutscenes from triggering (see here for an explanation by a smarter person than moi), but the single instance of something modifying EventManager (as the fixpack does, IIRC) is really unlikely to be problematic.

Sorry to not be more helpful... I know that just eliminating possible causes is not an especially productive contribution.

If there is no script to force the cutscene to play, I'll just play around with the toolset. Seems like I need to use a Virtual Machine to install it, since newer version of Windows don't support SQL Server 2005, but I'm determined to get it fixed. Thanks for the help anyway :)

There's no discrete trigger script for the pre-duel cutscene, it's initiated by the Landsmeet 'umbrella' script that manages everything that happens with that plot, from the moment that the player's party enters the antechamber. It's already 'running' if you've gotten that far.

What I meant by 'scripted cutscene' is that scripting is used to place the correct actors in the scene (based on player choices), and to play the needed variant of the scene (based on the race of the combatant facing Loghain).

  • 3 weeks later...

It took me a while but I've been poking around it every now and then for the past month and I found the solution. It was probably caused by the fixpack. It seems that something kept stacking more and more effects on my character, and these effects never went away. In the toolset, when I opened my save game and navigated to the following key:

Top Level Struct -> SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR -> SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR_CHAR -> SAVEGAME_EFFECT_LIST
I found out that there were almost 5000 effects on the list, while my last working save had about 18. The bug appears after the number of effects there surpasses 1022. I guess someone might find it helpful in the future, so the solution is as follows:
1. Disable ALL sustainable abilities on your character (and your party members just in case), unequip all your items then save and close the game.
2. Install the toolset. This is a bit tricky, since it requires SQL Server 2005 Express which doesn't support newer versions of Windows. There are some hacks available online to make it work on Windows 10, or you could use a virtual machine with Windows XP.
3. Open your save file with the toolset. The save is located at: C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents\Bioware\Dragon Age\Characters\YourCharacter\Saves\YourSaveSlot\YourSaveGame.das
4. Clear all entries under Top Level Struct -> SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR -> SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR_CHAR -> SAVEGAME_EFFECT_LIST and overwrite your save file.
After that it should work. I guess it could probably be done without the toolset and by using a hex editor,
