Windows Defender CPU Usage

Recommended Posts

I'm currently having a problem with Windows AV and it's CPU usage.

Sometimes, I turn on my antivirus to scan for a bit before going to bed. After that, I sometimes forget to turn off the scan and when I start up the PC, my CPU usage is at 100%, with no option to kill the process or stop the scan from the menu.

The only solution thus far has been to wait for it to stop. Restarting the PC does not help.

Can someone help me?

A restart should kill the process. (unless it is scheduled for the current time....) And in all reality, you only really need to run a scan if you suspect it might actually find something. Defender works in the background anyway. If the machine is on, and not especially busy, Defender will do a background scan, and you don't even notice it happening.
