How to flatten UV maps?

Hi everyone, Quick question, im having some issues trying to figure out how to flatten my uv maps. It doesnt matter how i mark the seams, the result is always like this:




Ive found some videos on youtube but some terminologies are unknown to me and some steps are taken for granted during the explanation so i cant keep up. BTW im using Blender 2.49b Thanx!

The experienced modellers here recommend the "Blender Noob to Pro" PDF manual included in this "Blender v2.49b" package.


There are also some other tutorials linked in the "Blender Mesh Editor" section of the wiki "Getting started creating mods using GECK" article which might perhaps help as well.


If you find a better description of the process, do let me know so I can update the wiki.
