  1. Thanks for the advice! I didn't want to invest another 100 hours into a game that could become unstable down the line so I ended up restarting anyway. I'm not sure any of the changes I made to the previous build would have mattered, but I don't want to risk it. This time I definitely won't be making any changes to my mods!
  2. I recently started a new game and have already got pretty far into it, but I ended up having to reinstall a couple mods during troubleshooting. I also uninstalled a couple patches that weren't needed, one of them was redundant and another was making the interiors too bright. In theory nothing I did should affect the game, but I did end up gaining a new plugin and dropping a couple others. Is this gonna be enough to destabilize my game down the line? Will it cause problems with my bashed patch? My previous save got broken 150+ hours in and I never want that to happen again. :(
  3. I enabled logging and checked my Papyrus logs, and ... wow. Lots of errors. Lots of "missing file" and "cannot be initialized because the script no longer contains that property". Is that normal? I have no idea what all that means or what to do with that information, so I tried reloading to an even earlier save right after I got the quest. I fast traveled to Riften and did a speedrun grabbing Esbern and taking him back to Riverwood. No crashes this time no matter how many times I saved, until I finished the quest and went to a small interior cell to try the Save Cleaner thing again. Got a CTD when I tried to save after running "bat start". So, I'm stumped. It's good to know that it's possible to get through that quest without having a CTD, but I'm worried that if I keep going with this savegame I'll keep having problems like this. I'm not sure I'll have the heart to start over after getting so far into this save, so it's kind of upsetting ... not sure what else I can try, though.
  4. Update: I tried reloading to after I started the quest but before I entered Riften and cleaned my save as instructed by Save Cleaner. It went fine and I had no issues saving or loading. Then I fast traveled to Riften, tried to save, and got a CTD. Reloaded, fast traveled to Riften again, tried to load my clean save, CTD. It seems like the problem is getting triggered as soon as I enter Riften, where the quest marker is located. I remembered that I also got a CTD when I returned to the Greybeards during the quest The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller. So it definitely seems like the problem is related to the main quest.
  5. Update: I reloaded to before I entered the Ratway and tried following the instructions for Save Cleaner's CTD fix. It goes fine until I input "bat kill" and then I get a CTD. I'll try reloading to an even earlier save from before I started the quest and see if it works then.
  6. I can post my LOOT logs if requested. Do I use "Copy Load Order" or "Copy Content"? I've never had to post my logs before because I usually don't need help with troubleshooting.
  7. I've been playing this savegame nearly 150 hours and have 345 mods installed (413 plugins including the bashed patch), but up until recently my game has been very stable. I've only had problems with CTDs twice, at locations where Alduin was raising dragons from their burrows. In both cases the CTDs stopped after leaving the area. I've been taking my time with the main quest and just recently started "A Cornered Rat" where you find Esbern in the Ratway. Everything went fine until I met Esbern, and then suddenly my game is crashing almost every time I save. I ended up reloading to before I met Esbern and that seemed to fix the problem, but I started getting CTDs again after exiting the Ragged Flagon. I've tried using Resaver and running LOOT, but so far nothing has helped. I tried taking Esbern to Riverwood and waiting until he stops being my follower, but again got a CTD when I tried to save. I'm able to save in the Ragged Flagon, but get CTDs after leaving. What could be the problem? I know it's common for saves to become unstable this many hours into the game and with this many mods, but everything worked fine up until I met Esbern. I'd prefer not to uninstall my mods to troubleshoot because it would be a huge pain and risk breaking my savegame. I know it's unwise, but I installed some new mods over the past three weeks (HSPlayerHomes - Honeyside, HSPlayerHomes - SeverinManor, Dunmerized Hjerim, Timescale 10, Vanilla Makeup HD, Civil War Aftermath, Siege Damage Repairs, and kryptopyr's Path Hub - Zim's Immersive Artifacts _ WACCF. I also updated Opulent Thieves Guild Patch Collection and reinstalled Fair Skin Complexion, ELFX, and The Carpathian Inn). Not sure if any of those mods could be the problem, but it seems weird that the CTDs don't start until after I meet Esbern and primarily after leaving the Ragged Flagon. Also, I haven't updated my game since before the Anniversary Edition was released and am still running the last version of SKSE64 from before the release. Does anyone have any suggestions?
  8. Hi y'all, I'm having problems with CTDs and am hoping someone can give me some advice. I just started the quest "A Cornered Rat" and am getting CTDs when I save, but only after meeting Esbern and exiting the Ragged Flagon.
  9. The mesh for Fur Boots is missing when worn by females. This is pretty annoying because all female guards have invisible feet. I'm pretty sure the culprit is The Book of UUNP. This mod adds many variants of female armors to the leveled lists, so instead of normal Fur Boots female guards tend to wear "sexier" variants that are high heeled and whatnot. However, this is immersion-breaking for me, so I have some patches installed that force female guards and soldiers to wear mostly vanilla armors. In vanilla males and females use the same mesh for Fur Boots, but I think maybe The Book of UUNP changed that. I feel like maybe this is the sort of problem that can be solved with SSEEdit, but unfortunately I don't have the experience to know what to do to fix it. Could anyone help? I'd rather not uninstall The Book of UUNP because I love many of the armors it adds, but invisible feet can be pretty distracting.
  10. Are you using NMM or Vortex? Vortex can be a little annoying when you're still learning how to use it, but I highly recommend you do. It has some really amazing features and NMM doesn't work properly for some mods.
  11. What sort of process are you using to install mods? Are you installing them all through Vortex, and have you made sure you're using the right load order? If you don't have much experience modding Skyrim you may have made some mistakes without realizing. A pretty reliable way to fix this sort of problem is to do a clean install of Skyrim, run the game and make sure everything works, install SKSE64, run the game and make sure everything works, THEN start installing mods. If you have any uncertainty about whether or not a mod could cause instability in your game, run the game after you install it and maybe even load a save to make sure it works. Don't install a whole bunch of mods at once without testing the game in between them! By opening the game after installing each mod or every couple of mods, you will be able to tell immediately which mod is giving you problems. Reach the instructions on the page of each mod you download. You may need to merge mods using Wrye Bash. Some mods require patches if you're going to use both of them at the same time. Be cautious and try not to install many mods that make big changes to your game until you have more experience.
  12. I noticed that General Tullius was afflicted with the black face bug too, so I googled the problem. It seems that it's usually a load order related error, so I took a look at my load order and moved "Men of Skyrim" (changes the faces of male npcs) and associated patches to the bottom of my load order, right before the bashed patch. That fixed it! The guy from the Bard's College still had the bug though, so I moved "Improved Bards" (changes the faces of npcs at the college) below "Men of Winter". Now he's fixed too! If it's only NPCs added by LC Build Your Noble House that have the black face bug, try moving that mod near the end of your load order, after anything else that changes NPC faces.
  13. Whelp, I tried re-installing SSE, and that fixed it. I'll update this thread if I figure out which mod was causing it.
  14. I'm having that problem with one of the NPCs at the Bard's College. It's possible that LC Build Your Noble House is doing it, but I have no idea ... I haven't actually used any of that mod's content yet so I don't know if I'm having the same problem as you or not.
  15. Whenever my character stops running, the (1st person) camera does a thing that gives you the sensation of "rocking back" a little. I guess the fov changes a bit? I'm not sure exactly. The effect is less pronounced when walking, but still noticeable. I find it incredibly annoying and it really detracts from my experience in a subtle way. Do other people have this problem? Is there a way to fix it? Please help!
  16. No idea why it isn't working for you, but I just made two followers who were merchants so at the very least I know followers can be merchants.
  17. Very true! I am not a good programmer myself and I get frustrated too easily, but it's all worth it for that "aha!" moment when you finally "find the key". Of course, it is generally best to choose projects that are suitable for one's level of experience before attempting to take on more complex challenges.
  18. Are you using the vanilla character creation menu or are you using the racemenu mod? If you're using the mod there are a few extra steps you have to use to make your character's face look right.
  19. Have you tried saving after you load Skyrim.esm and Update.esm? Despite what the tutorials may say, you don't actually have to save the file before loading the dependencies.
  20. Also, a bunch of different mods are now highlighted in red in Wrye Bash, most of them relating to Dawnguard or Dragonborn in some way. Very mysterious.
  21. So, I was fiddling around with my mods earlier, mostly just upgrading Better Vampires and RaceCompatibility, and it seemed to work fine when my roommate loaded her game a few minutes later ... until the computer crashed. Now Skyrim crashes in the main menu. I opened Nexus Mod Manager to start troubleshooting, but ran into a new problem: every time I install or uninstall a mod NMM gives me the 'over 255 mods' error. Any ideas?
  22. I was having the same problem, your fix worked so thanks. :)
  23. I've been encountering an extremely annoying problem that crashes my computer each time. Sometimes it happens while fighting a dragon with ice breath; when the dragon shoots ice at me the screen suddenly turns all one color and the sound changes to a terrible buzz. The computer doesn't respond to anything, even pressing the reset button. To fix it, I have to hold down the power button until the computer shuts down. Other times, it happens while I'm casting Lesser Ward. On these occasions, the computer turned several different colors but in a pattern, like a seeing eye maze. Sometimes the game sound continues, but the computer is non-responsive until I restart it. Can anyone help me out? I have an Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 graphics card, 4GB DDR2 RAM and a Phenom II X4 940 processor, if that helps.
