I am having the same problem. I have two followers currently, Angel and Asciene, both from different mods. when I go into sneak mode, Angel also goes into sneak mode, but Asciene immediately walks away and goes into sandbox mode (I think that's what it's called), meaning she goes and uses a smelter, or an enchanting table, or the like. Since the original post hasn't been answered in over 10 months, I'll have to dismiss her, and continue on whilst holding my breath. ;) Peace.
