  1. Alright, I've got a bit of a problem. After generating (and regenerating) LOD several times in our Ethas worldspace, all of the mountain set pieces have always shown up purple (i.e. they're textureless). Everything else shows their textures correctly, but those mountain set pieces do not.

Figured it out. The level 0 (highest level of detail) LOD mountains use a different texture set, which is outside of the /Textures/LOD folder that I had converted to .TGA.

But even with that fixed, I have a couple more LOD-related questions:

    • Any idea why I'm getting black lines when generating terrain textures?
    • Any clue why trees aren't generating properly? They're all showing up in this weird straight line well to the east of where they should be (and there should be a LOT more trees than shown):

I think it's funny that in Fallout 3, terrain meshes were a big problem and would crash the GECK in most cases. Now objects, terrain textures, and trees are the problem.

Some good news, everyone, officially got the heightmap working in-game. Of course, it will require quite a few adjustments (i.e. the smoothing tool in the heightmap editor), but it's a great starting point. Enjoy your first, ridiculous looking screenshot of Ethas. :P

Having all of the land mapped out in terms of height (even in this rough, extremely unfinished form) will speed up the initial world building process quite a bit. Yay for us?

  3. Sounds Interesting

    So some questions

    1. Can I take my charcter in and out of your realm between Skyrim and Ethas?

    2. if yes to 1. At any time? i.e can I `bob` back and forwards between the two realms

    3. The lore is not the same what about , weapons, armour, `monsters` and races?

    1) Absolutely, that's one thing we really want to push. We didn't want this to be an either/or situation.

    2) Of course, there will be some slight limitations. Switching to Skyrim in the middle of combat, for example, or in a timed section of a quest could get screwy, so we'll likely have an overarching quest running in the background that manages when you can/can't switch back and forth. But yes, if you're wandering in the wilderness and decide to go explore the tundra of Skyrim, that's certainly an option. If after a bit you get bored of the cold, you can move back to Ethas. It will be a very simple process.

    3) Races are something that we'll reveal in the future, and the same goes for armor and weapons. I will say this though- seeing as the two countries you'll be playing in, Arelia and Virardan, have drastically different climates than Skyrim, the fur clothing of the default game won't work in most situations.

  4. As long as you have a good mic, then I'm game to give ya a try. I'll add you to my "Voice Actors" bookmark folder and send ya PM when we actually get around to starting voices, which, this time around, I'm actually in charge of, instead of just being one of the voice actors who happened to end up doing more than voice acting when Eli was making Alton. :P (And yeah, I'm an audio nerd, so I'm real keen on mic quality thing xD)

I have a Shure SM58 and a decent audio interface to work with, so I think I should be OK on the mic front (although it's not completely amazing, I know). I don't think the recording quality will be the problem, anyhow. Let me know if that'll be sufficient or not.

What I did notice about Alton, Il is that a lot of the voices in game were a different level from the ones back in the Wasteland; this wasn't that much of a problem since I just had to reshuffle the volume settings in-game to make the balance a bit better, though.

Yeah, as J said, he's taking over audio this time. I am definitely no expert in any field of game-related audio, thus the sometimes lacking voices in Alton. ;)

  5. I think J summed it up pretty well with "you WILL have to have multiple characters to experience it all." For anyone who's played Alton and experienced the decision you have to make in the middle, consider Ethas's main quest something like that, but on ridiculous amounts of steroids. I can't wait to show you guys what we've been working on!
  6. Finally, its 2 months. Thats not a crippling long time. Look at Dead Island, its been out for almost 4 and its STILL broken. And theres no editor comming. Bethesda isn't a single focus company, they can't devote all their resources to the Construction Set just to make it release quicker (they'd probably create a 'too many cooks' situation anyway). Chill out, do some mod planning, and develop some patience.

The creation kit was a selling point of the game, one they went to great lengths to advertise and claim it would be released alongside the game. It is not gratis that we should be happy to get. We paid for it. What relevance does the state of some other title have to this situation? "Look, they paid for a product and didn't get what they were sold so don't complain"? Rubbish. Money changed hands and the product was not as advertised. This is unacceptable.

Great lengths to advertise it's day-one release? I don't remember that at all. What I remember being said is that they were HOPING for a day one release or at least close to it. If you look at Fallout 3, for example, the GECK came out almost three months after the release of the game. I don't remember when the TESCS came out, but still, give them some time.

  7. Hey everyone, Elijah Houck, creator of Alton, IL here! I can't wait for you guys to see what we've got in store, this is certainly going to be a fun adventure for all of us!

Like Justin said, be sure to check out our site (designed by yours truly ;) ) and bookmark it! We've got a few images and a music sample on there, so be sure to check that out too.

  8. You see, if they said the Ck will come year after the game at the start, it would be cool, but this guy said it will be so amazing and so soon so many times that I lost count a year ago.

As for perfecting the PC version, personally, no less... When several tenths of thousand of people get serious technical troubles, something doesn't add up here. Also, he didn't notice the UI and some of the more freaky bugs?

And supporting modders by encrypting files on the run is also cool. I mean especially the part where they fixed the fix that allowed so many people to play without constant crashes.

I just fear that when we actually get the CK, there will be some "Ooops" as well.

And don't get me wrong, I love Skyrim, and that's why I actually care. I Liked Todd too, he's just so enthusiastic and eccentric (in the good way) but lately it just looks like he's saying things without thinking about them and following up on them. Which, as is mentioned above, reminds me of another developer who was once pretty cool.

I will give you that, I didn't think about the UI issues. The UI is really the only thing holding back Skyrim on the PC, IMO.

But what encrypted files? Skyrim's .bsa's, textures, meshes (with the new NIFTools for 3ds Max), etc. all open fine for me. If you're talking about how it simply uses Steam's DRM, then the argument there is more directed towards Valve rather than anyone at Bethesda.

  9. I'm actually starting to dislike Todd.

CK will be part of the game! Oh yes, yes! - Ooops.

I am currently testing the PC version to make sure everything is perfect, yes! - Ooops.

We will do all we can to support modders, yes. -Ooops.

    ...

By that, I mean I don't even want to know what this Ooops! will be

So because they're trying to get documentation up and making sure everything works well enough in the CK, that makes you dislike Todd?

What is so bad about the PC version? I've experienced a grand total of probably four CTD's in my 60 hours playing. Better than FO3's constant crashing.

Your third point doesn't make any sense. Skyrim has the same modding support as previous Bethesda titles. All you have to do is wait a few weeks, which if I remember correctly, isn't too bad compared to FO3's three month wait.

  10. Release it! Like Milemarker said, I made sure to get Alton out well before Skyrim's release (roughly 2 weeks or so beforehand), so in your case I'd wait until sometime in December or so. The biggest fear I had going in was that because New Vegas has pretty much dried up the FO3 community, I wouldn't get many downloads. But I got file of the month in October after releasing on the 28th, so I'd say that you'll do just fine. ;)
  11. Guess who gets to see the first screenshot of Alton with LOD? You do!

    Enjoy!

Factions? Hopefully as meaningful as factions in NV, instead of crapfactions like 3, where even if you sided with Eden, Enclave troops would still pewpew you.

Indeed as meaningful as factions in NV. You side with one, the other hates you, and the other stops attacking you. The story also shifts completely based on who you side with.

You'll see, just wait until later this month (hopefully)! ;)

  12. Alright, some great news- I've gotten LOD generation to work in Alton. I'll write a tutorial on how to do it when this is said and done, since the GECK is notorious for not wanting to generate for large worlds.

For those of you that don't know the meaning of LOD, think of it like this- it's the difference between seeing a few cells in front of you or seeing a vast, sweeping landscape that goes on for miles. ;)

I'm very interested in how you managed to get LOD generation to work, it's a major roadblock right now for anyone wanting to create new exterior worldspaces of any appreciable size.

No doubt about that. Alton is 439 terrain chunks (wasteland is 1500ish if I remember right), with an explorable area twice the size of Point Lookout, so it's definitely benefiting from LOD.

  14. Are you from the area? If so, awesome!

And unfortunately, no, no Piasa Bird. But you'll definitely recognize some locations, namely the Clark Bridge, River Road, the Subway/Imo's/Schnuck's/Walgreens area (i.e. State Street), etc. ;)

Also, everyone, expect a release... soon. I'm wrapping up the scripting on the main quest as we speak (actually just finished another quest a few minutes before typing this), and after that it's just a couple of simple side quests. GET READY!
