  1. By definition the act of piracy is illegal. To say the used game market is legal piracy is absurd. I borrowed a friends truck to help me move, it that considered grand theft auto? How about the guy with the loud music in his car, is it piracy because I can hear it in my car without paying for that song? Buying used is not piracy, the developer did receive money for one copy of the game; it doesn't matter who is using that one copy. Even if somebody walked into a store and stole a physical copy of the game, the developer still got their money for that copy from the store when the store placed the order to stock the game. If developers don't want people to play used copies of their games then they need to make games that people aren't going to turn around and sell back to the store a week after buying it. They need to quit marketing every single game to every single player type. A hybrid FPS/RPG/RTS/HOG/MOBA/TMG/4X/MUD isn't going to be equally liked by all the fans of each of those genres no matter how much money the studio spends over hyping it. More likely you will get fans of all genres to buy the game, who will all then realize that the gameplay elements they were interested in were way over-promised and they will trade it in for something they actually want to play.
  2. So here is an odd problem. Fallout 3 wants the disc, but I'm launching it from FOMM, Fose or the executable but not the launcher. If I put the disc in it says that it needs the original disc. The only way I can play the game is to insert the disc and use the launcher. This is quite frustrating as I have quite the collection of mods that all require the use of FOSE. I have both the original disc from the initial launch and the GOTY and I have uninstalled, deleted every Fallout 3 folder and reinstalled and this keeps happening.

The easiest way would be to take all the super mutants off of the spawn list and replace them with something else, this way when ever you happen upon a super mutant spawn point it will spawn whatever you put on the list instead.. You could also go cell by cell and delete/replace the super mutant spawn points
  5. Right off the top of my head I would use a global variable set at 100 for your MP and a script that counts how much ammo you have. Lets say you determine 10mm ammo to have a max ammo count of 35, if you have more the script removes the excess ammo. If you have less than 35 bullets and your MP is greater than 3 the script adds one round and decreases your MP by 3. If your ammo count is 35 then it increases your MP until it reaches 100. Have the script run once every 30 seconds and test it for gameplay balance.
  6. As far as I know the only restriction is on using any of the actual assets. You could remake Junktown down to the smallest detail and have the identical conversation with Killian Darkwater, but you can't use the original voice recordings you would have to make your own. Other than that it's just the hundreds of man hours it would take that is stopping you.
  7. It seems like the older games are all I ever play anymore. Come to think of it I think the newest game I have played in the past 6 months was Oblivion! I have beena playin Starcraft, Warcraft 1&2, Fallout 1&2, Jagged Aliance 1&2, Space Quests 1-3, Police Quest, Arena and Angband. On the downside however, I only ever played Diablo 1 once, I got bored halfway through it and rushed to the end. I haven't had the courage to pick it up again or try part 2. The same thing happened with Baulders Gate, one the best CRPGs ever made and I can't get past disc 2.
  8. I'm glad to see that there is a real interest in this, and as the project grows any info released should gather more interest. I think the best way to proceed would be to open a thread to look for ideas/concepts of what the forums users want and then put links to that thread in the signature blocks of the people involved. This is a great idea and I feel the sooner something tangible can be produced the better chance you have of keeping a good group together. Even if it is just a and not actually playable. Anyway, I'm Stevedog and I can write (story line, dialogue and code). I'd be willing to help out any way I can.
  9. This could be a really great idea, or a complete disaster. As mentioned before there needs to be strong leadership and division of duties. You also need to have concept art and storyline/theme elements fleshed out and decided upon before too many people get involved and start pulling the project into several directions. I like the LOTR idea posed by thelonewarrior, I would also like to work on a futuristic RPG based on the world of Firefly, or a cyberpunk RPG in the vein of Shadowrun, and another more like Bladerunner, there is also one I've thought about called The Immortal where you start as an early human fighting saber-tooth tigers and time slowly advances until you are building spacecraft and conquering other worlds, oh and a Zombie survival RPG and about 20 other RPG ideas that I have; and I'm just one guy! Multiply that by every person you recruit and you have a project that will never get off the ground. You also want to decide what type of engine you are going to use, either grab one of Bethesdas games and do a total conversion with the same limitations found in the original game or grab a 3rd party open source engine and have to write all the basic rules and game mechanics from scratch. Are you going for the realistic graphics of Call of Duty or something more stylized like Borderlands? Will the game be played from the 1st, 3rd or Isometric viewpoint? I would be very interested in seeing where this goes, I'd even be willing to offer up my meager skills if it would help. But first there needs to be a structure and hierarchy for how decisions should be made, then as detailed a concept as possible should be formed before mass recruitment begins. Just be warned that the project as a whole will take years to complete and whoever is at the head of the group had better be prepared to almost all the work themselves. If you want to make the game be truly For Gamers By Gamers then you could also try putting up a series of polls to help make some of the artistic decisions. For example the first poll could focus on Theme, then a later poll would be for Setting. Put a time limit on the polls and say that after 30 days whatever the highest rated idea will be the one used. Even concept art could be put up this way, have maybe 4-5 different concepts for the same characters/items and have people vote on what they like best. This might help settle some disputes over creative differences.
  10. Well, not every version*, and that is going to be a growing problem here on the Nexus. Since the Steam Workshop will only be available to those with legitimate copies of the game, the Nexus will become a GoTo place for all those with pirated versions to get mods. I'm sure the moderators are already busy enough making pirates "walk the plank" every time a new game gets released, now they will get a new influx of pirates when great mods are released/updated. How long before moderators start to feel like giving up? How long before they start thinking about some sort of Steam verification before downloading mods? How long before game publishers decide to enact a Steam Workshop only criteria for mods? *My comment should not be misconstrued as an admission of piracy. I don't have Skyrim, I have no plans to get Skyrim, I've accepted the fact that I will never play Skyrim. I'm just sitting on the sidelines watching to see what happens.

  12. Yes, but then Steam would have to :yucky: compete for customers. Think about this; Have you ever seen an advertisement for Steam itself? Can you name any other company that rose to number one in its market with out advertising? And yet Steam has over 30M customers, if it were 100% optional their customer base would be drastically lower. I believe that if any other industry behaved like Steam they would be brought up on Anti-Trust charges. Imagine that Ford has a specially designed fuel tank on your car that can only accept the nozzles at Exxon stations, by buying a Ford you are required to use only Exxon fuel. Imagine that both Ford and Exxon have grounds to sue you if you make any modifications to allow you to use the brand of fuel that you choose. To the OP: Steam has a lot of features that I neither need nor want, it therefore offers zero benefits to me. All that is left is the hassles that come with using Steam without any benefits to offset them. I have a fairly good internet connection, but not on my gaming machine. The much vaunted Offline Mode is completely useless in this situation, I need a Never Going To Be Online Mode, I will only get games that allow me to fully install them while 100% offline. There are lots of other Digital Markets that sell games which allow this, unfortunately their selections are limited as so many games are irrevocably tied to Steam. I love the idea of Digital Distribution for games, but as long as Steam exists in it's current form then DD can never reach its full potential. I was disappointed when Fallout: New Vegas was released as a Steamworks only game, I was really looking forward to it. But I was holding out hope that all the benefits Bethesda kept touting, such as auto-patching and DLC distribution, would be unnecessary once the GOTY was released and that it would be Steam-free. However now that I see that the Skyrim Creation Kit has been integrated with the Steam Workshop I now see that Bethesda has lashed itself to Steams' mast, I realize that as a PC Gamer who doesn't use Steam my kind is no longer welcome.
