  1. Forgot! I tried installing Skyrim again (3rd attempt) and it seems to be okay...guess the third time's a charm or the increased security did something to permit installation from the DVD? Don't know. I'll blame it on gremlins! :nuke:
  2. Okay...here's the report. btw, my first post is directed at the fact that Steam had to be installed BEFORE I could install the game. I'm not one that appreciates having to use 3rd party software. When I buy a game, it's nice to be able to sit down and load the game without having 3rd party interference. Here are the results of the system test: After uninstalling Steam, the adware was not present. After re-installing Steam, the adware WAS present. Before anyone says anything, please permit me to explain a few things... I have been working with computers since the days of my Atari 8k. I have written many of my own programs in the past and created my own websites using HTML. All that aside, I make no claims to being a "genius" or "wizard" when it comes to computers. Every system I build teaches me something new and whenever people ask me what I know about computers, my answer is always "not much". Also, I live alone so there is no one else that has access to my systems. As far as browsing, this is the only site I have been on this morning as I am watching this discussion. I want to be 100% sure about this. Another thing to bear in mind is that not all spyware programs are created equal. For example, I run as many as three different spyware programs and there always seems to be one that will find something the other two missed. The program that originally found the problem was Spybot-Search & Destroy. A program that I have come to know and trust over the years as it has proved to be the most reliable. Here's what I found: After re-installing the software (Steam), the entry for W3i.IQ5.fraud was found to be present. I have internet security set to medium-high so this seemed strange since even the Nexus sites won't allow me to download without first telling the computer it's okay to do so. The problem is coming from a cookie that gets installed when Steam is installed. Whether or not the cookie is known to the Steam developers is unknown as I have no way of finding out. When increasing my security on cookies, the problem ceases and the adware does not show up after running diagnostics. If you're not finding it, then I would say that your security features are high enough to block it. That's a good thing.
  3. saldu: I did look that up, but for whatever reason, I still have to install Steam, which I don't understand and am still looking into. Glad to hear you don't have the adware, that's a BIG relief. I'm in the process of doing a complete system check (again). I'll report any findings if something proves different.
  4. Goblin Girl: That price includes the hardcover Prima Game Guide...the game was $60, the guide $30 (including shipping)
  5. Ygfbv: you obviously didn't read my post. I didn't have this problem until AFTER I installed Steam. The adware came from installing Steam. Also, I'm not saying that Steam IS adware, I'm saying it CONTAINS adware. Big difference!
  6. Well people...watch your backs. I pre-ordered my copy of Skyrim in July and received it yesterday only to discover that I can't load the game without using Steam. Sooooooooo...I loaded the program and had to wait 4 hours while it downloaded the game I just purchased on DVD! What's up with that????? Anyway, the system locked up after a few minutes into the download and I had to reboot. Since I build my own systems, I know when something is awry and I decided to run my spyware program. Please understand that I had just checked the system prior to loading Steam because new definitions were available and there was no spyware on the system. After installing Steam and my system freezing, I ran the program again and here's what I found: The name of the Adware is W3i.IQ5.fraud and is listed as AdwareC. It adds 2 registry entries that you will have to remove. These can be found at: (SBI $467B1F92)Settings @ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Freeze.com AND (SBI $678078F9)Settings @ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\W3i Because my computers are tuned personally by me, that means that adware will cause my system to lock up whenever present. Sadly, I was building a new system because I was eager to embrace all the graphic improvements that Skyrim had to offer. It is an AMD 6-core with 16GB DDR3 using 4 HDD on RAID 10 and dual Radeon HD6870 on Crossfire. Now, because of this, I am disappointed to have to report that the game that was 90% of the reason for doing this new build will be the only game that does not get installed. The game has bee trashed ($90 down the toilet) and Steam has been removed from my computer and will never again be permitted to install. My best to those of you who don't mind having adware on your computers, but as far as I'm concerned, any infection is a bad infection. Looks like I'll be heading back to Oblivion...and gladly too. 7. Well...I pre-ordered the game in July and received it today and all I can say is...well, the topic title says it all. I get the game, sit down to load it on my computer only to find out that I have to install Steam, download the game, an wait for 4 f***ing hours! What the f**k is up with that? I don't normally get heated over a game, but this takes the f***ing cake! What a piece of CRAP! Oh well, live and learn! That's $90 I just threw in the trash! I'm going back to Oblivion. Bethesda can kiss my a** for all I care. Hope they enjoy my money! I won't be returning to the Skyrim Nexus, that's for sure. I'll stay with the Elder Scrolls...probably do some more castles. As for Skyrim...you can have it!
  8. I have to agree with others here on making a back-up. I, personally, keep a separate folder named Original OB Files that contains the original data files for the game in the event I have to replace them. I also keep a folder containing only the current mods I'm using. This folder usually contains an individual folder for each type of mod (7 zip, RAR, WinZip) and a set of folders where everything has been unpacked, including meshes, textures, sounds, etc. and a folder labeled ESP for all the esp icons. This way, if I get mods I don't like and want to remove, I simply delete the data folder and replace it with the previous folder containing all the old mods that I was using. It takes a little time to do this, but trust me, if you download a lot of mods as I tend to do to see if you like them, this is the best method for keeping things straight and preventing that old :wallbash: feeling!
  9. Hello! It's not often I add my two cents to forums...I usually download various mods, add them to see if I like them, and play merrily on. Today, however, is one of those rare moments when I brave peeking from beneath my rock to add my voice :P The reason is 1- to ask a question/make a statement and 2-perhaps motivate a mod. Whilst searching through the latest files, I noticed a mod that removes the butt holes from horses. Actually, I was wondering why someone hasn't made a mod that adds road apples to the game. Seriously...I know there are some that might find that disgusting but pooping is a part of life  like eating, drinking, sleeping, peeing, and screwing! We do it, horses and all other animals do it too! So...in regards to part two of this post, perhaps there is someone willing to at least look into this? :thanks: In the meantime, I continue to roll on through Oblivion as I, like many others I'm sure, await the release of TES5...back under the rock :whistling:
  10. Everything seems okay here except I no longer get graphics of the files, just a description, even when logged in. Is it just me or has anyone else lost graphics?
