  1. I'm not the worlds most experienced modder either matey, in fact I've not released anything on here (mainly because I am by nature a perfectionist and therefore think all my stuff looks really, really naff) and have mainly only made compatability stuff anyways (most of which don't seem to work quite as I envisage). You have the basics covered though, with the game and construction kit. That will allow you to play around a little. What other programs you're going to need will likely depend just what you are modding. Scripting quests ect. requires a slightly different approach, and different set of tools, to making armours, but most of (if not all of) the stuff you will find is out there and its free. The only real way to find out if you are gonna need more than you have (from personal experience at least) is to take a "cross that bridge when I get to it" attitude and pick up stuff as and when you need it. However, I have heard bad things about Vista and the construction kit (I don't use Vista on my games machine - too skittish - but theres a lotta damming evidence on here against it) Not that I'm trying to dishearten you or anything... just thought I should pass on a heads up that I've picked up on since joining the Nexus community. 2. Interesting... and he can't be killed... so even though you find him dead in the first place, he seems to be essential... twisted... I'm thinking recruit and share might have to be tried on this fella... he'd make a nice addition to my little undead army. Well, excepting that awkward can't move thing. Thats just a minor niggle though. I'll just drag him to somewhere I think he'll be of use and resurrect him. Jen
  3. If Karla is a Mystic Elf, chances are you don't actually have an add-on with the Mystic Elf Race installed. Its not a 'vanilla' race, meaning its not a race that ships with the game. The Readme should tell you what mods were used to create the charector. If not, look for Rens Beauty Pack or COBL, but be warned, COBL is in itself a complex mod, that can change a lot of features in the game, and off the top of my head I believe you also need the COBL Races Res pack. I've not seen the mod myself (don't tend to use saved games - I use Face Gen to make my own toons) but there aren't many mods beyond that with the ability to actually kill a saved game before it loads - usually you'd just get the missing content warning, or meshes/textures would be awol when you loaded the toon, and that would be that. Jen
  4. Will do mate. And thanks for the mod. That worked. 8) I'll carry on trying to work out which one did it and then have a play with it in the CS if I can, see if I can figure out what went wong. It could be one of my own compatability patches I've made I guess, I just don't see how that coulda happened as all I normally do is move a couple of doors and some NPC paths. :wallbash: Jen
  5. Thanks for the replies guys. We're talking a serious jump... 4 to 5k for training abilities at journeyman level... think it used to be something like the level of the ab X 10, so the most you would ever pay was 990g. Thats no biggy for someone who crashes through dungeons as habitually as I do but this... sheesh, it stings. It certainly wasn't hiked up this much when I was levelling my main guy. I have noticed that some mods do state that if installed incorrectly or whatever they can kinda screw up your trainers, but I think that was more a case of them vanishing or not being able to train you at all. Ah well... s'pose I have a lotta bedtime reading what with all these read me's and deactivating all my mods 1 by 1 to see just where the issue lies. Just hope its not a damn overwrite or something that I'm using. That would suck. I'll check out that mod matt. Thanks again. Jen
  6. Off the top of my head mate, I recon both Francesco's items/creatures and Cobl 1.6 and upwards need the newest patch. Most mods these days do, I'm afraid. I'd get the UOP (Unofficial Oblivion Patch) too if I were you, just for the additional troubleshooting. Failing that, you could try installing a map mod. Elven Map Redux is probably the most popular but I think it needs the newest version too. There are several other map overhauls out there and some of em are pretty good... I only ended up going back to the Elven Redux because its the best one for Elswyr. Jen
  7. So, I've built up my little "basic" Oblivion build, and I'm currently playing through it with a couple of new toons (so as not to risk breaking my main guy who I generally use for FCOM rampages and bloodletting in the major cities) However, I've suddenly realised that the training costs are astronomical. Now, being a thorough guy, I generally always train my guys before I level up... but I can't afford it. I mean, I really can't afford it. After crashing through 10 dungeons, and loading my horse down so bad its groins scraping along the floor, I can afford to train twice. At level 6!!!! Something has really ramped up my trainers, and I cannot for the life of me work out what. As FCOM is currently disabled, the only mods I have installed that I think could be responsible are TIE and COBL. But TIE doesn't seem to be functioning right anyways. (working on that one- probably a minor conflict) ... yet neither mention anything anywhere about ramping up the trainer costs. And with both and/or one or the other disabled, theres no difference. Still astronomical training costs. Now, I'm not the console cheat type, so I don't want "just type playeraddskillblahbloodyblah..." as an answer... but does anyone know which mod could be guilty of this or, better yet, what .ini (if any) value controls training costs? Just so I can nerf it back down to a somewhat more acheivable level... Thanks in advance. Jen.
  8. And, just for anyone else hunting them, the only way to get them is to get the game of the year Deluxe version from Steam. As much as I love the game, I'm not buying it again. I mean, I know they say third time lucky and all that but geez. Methinks Beth have dropped the ball somewhat there. Jen
  9. I shoulda Frapsed launching that Wolf off of Cloud Ruler temple for y'all... that was funneh. :D Shame I don't think I have the save no more. :( Jen
  10. If you have OBMM its really not a problem pally... Oblivion .exe isn't needed unless you want to make a hard copy of the disk (Not advisable for copyright protection reasons). The OBMM launcher is actually better for anyone modding Obi anyways - Easier to install mods using OMODs and easier to re-arrange that all too critical (and bloomin finickity) load order. The "Data Files" selection is simply the mod/OMod list in OBMM. I'm not sure, but I have a sneaky suspicion that my Oblivion.exe may be greyed out when using the ISO image as well... I don't know 100% though because I always launch it through OBMM, or OBSE if I've not changed anything recently. Jen
  11. If you're using another levelling mod as well thats likely whats causing the conflict mate. Apologies if you're not. Just seems a lil unclear. 2 Mods that alter the self same charectoristics, especially Player charector ones, unless they are designed to run in tandem, will likely make the game crash. Jen
  12. OBMM must be in the Oblivion folder (not the data folder like a mod, but the one with the actual Oblivion.exe in there, if I'm remembering this right - will check when I get home and ammend as necessary) Now... first silly Q... whats your operating system? XP / Win 7/ Vista? If Vista you need to give the program admin rights, and I believe its the same for Win 7, but the fact its carrying on trying to run and drinking your CPU resources, and not just telling you that and killing itself, screams that something more sinister is at work there as well if thats the problem. A couple peeps I know (including my brother in spite of me telling him if he killed his new comp doing it he could fix it himself - he's still peeved at me for the £65 the guy who came out to fix it for him charged him) tried to download a third party program for Vista that gave programs that need admin rights those rights automatically. Don't do that. Ever. That is a security feature and those third party programs allow every trojan under the sun to get around it and the rest of windows, albeit it rather naff, in built security systems. And it won't uninstall cleanly, leaving you needing a reformat or a fresh install of Vista. Which isn't fun. As for if that has anything to do with this I don't know... as I said, I didn't fix it for him. I do know it shot his OBMM Launcher dead though, similar to what you are describing. (didn't launch but didn't tell him why) Jen
  13. Personal experience with Better Cities - It doesn't matter what else you've got. At all. If that better cities ESM is missing, the game won't be pointed at the better cities BSA = immediate CTD. I know this because I downloaded the full Better Cities OMOD without the resources and thats what I got. I could use the excuse that the name is misleading but its not really... I just didn't read the readme ~guilty grin~ Recon that any better cities patch or ESP looks for that straight away, much in the same way any of the Dragon Captions major mods (thinking specifically Sutch Reborn here - great mod btw) looks for their resources pack (wich once again is ace) and shoots down your game before it can even bring up the Bethesda Softworks logo if it can't find it. Jen
  14. Well... thats freaky... and I think would indicate more of a texture clash if the textures are there sometimes but not all the time... perhaps you have another creature mod & thats overwriting some of the textures? I'm not sure if this is always the way way to do it, but I've found as a rule if two mods alter the same thing, and one is an OMOD, allow the omod to overwrite the texture. If its two regular mods, allow whichever one is the latter in your load order to. (further reading may be required, I'm no genius at this stuff but it has helped me fix missing textures and meshes occasionally in the past) I've actually been working on getting more 'Base' mods for whats (hopefully) going to be my final full install of Oblivion lately, so I've not been using the petshop a great deal, however, I'll nip back and have a nosey tonight if I get some time. Jen
  15. Ooooh... Garfield sir, that sounds fantastic... :) Nearly as good as your taggy with the sig about diets. Must explain that one to my gf sometime. And yerp, the Vile Lair rocks. Anyways, meantimes, whilst waiting for unholy darkness, the LTD Vamp overhaul is kinda rocking too. In fact, its very rocking. This one adds some more general vampire lore, rather than Elder Scrolls specific vampire lore. I had heard its quite buggy but I installed it anyways, and it runs fine with the other... oohhh, somewhere between 150-200 mods I have running at a time, depending on what I'm doin and why. :) Jen
  16. Agree with GG... play it plain for a little while. And definately get Oblivion Mod Manager {or OBMM} (use your google fu, young grasshopper) as the unofficial patches (or UOPs) come as OMOD files designed specifically for use with OBMM which makes installing them, and a lot of the more complicated and larger patches & Mods, a breeze. When you start installing mods, you'll likely also want OBSE (Oblivion Script Extender) and BOSS (don't remember what it stands for but it helps organise your precious load order) and this is really, really, really basic, but a lot of people don't always do it (myself included, which led to my first and only mod-related clean install, which was a pain in the ass after installing 140+ mods) read the readme files that usually come packaged with the mod... please please please... i've not been back on the modding scene for Oblivion long but on this site and the others I've seen people having issues and killing their games simply because they didn't take a couple of minutes to read a few lines of text. As a side I'd also advise periodically backing up your data folders (just in case) and keeping a copy of any mods you've installed in case something goes horribly wrong. If these take up too much precious HDD space {I know THAT feeling} you can always zip em and burn em to a CD or DVD. Jen
  17. One silly question mate, and I know its a noob one so sowwy in advance, but I gotta ask it... are you running the Unofficial patches for all the official DLC's you've got? And OBSE and nifscript if any of your mods require them... if you're sure the card's not freaking out, it does sound like your game is trying to do something... perhaps too many things at once, or run an incomplete command upon you taking damage. I'm using the GOTY edition and something in the region of 150 - 200 mods at the moment, and whilst I've not seen the lock up on damage issue thing I did have some problems trying to update it and stuff. And the UOP for SI freaked it out completely for an age. The crashing on close thing was starting to worry me though... seems it always dies, even if I open it, don't bother loading/starting a game and exit from the main menu screen, it still crashes. Kinda glad I'm not the only one seeing that. I know its not really a huge thing, its more of an annoyance, but considering the GOTY Edition does this when its completely unmodded on my machine (no mods installed, not just inactive) it did have me worried for a while. Jen
  18. Step 1 - Download face exchange lite right here on Nexus. Step 2 - Download the face totality pack (again, right here. =) ) and have a play. I'm having hours of fun with these things lately. Can't tell you exactly how to use them, because I'm still just in the playing around with it phase myself, but it is fun, and they are both real handy utilities, which I am 110% sure can do what you're asking. Jen
  19. Tend to agree with Dezdi on this one, but my personal recommendation would be to keep your original downloaded zip files and zipped versions of your data backups created during the modding process. Use 7zip. Better compression than winrar, and it actually tends to unzip things to where you tell it to. If you're struggling for hdd space, burn them to a cd or dvd. Jen
  20. Sounds good... :) I lack the ability to do such a thing methinks (would be one hell of a build) but I'm sure one of the more talented modders on here can, having seen some of their work first hand. Not 100% sure how workable it is limiting the charectors to one race though. Maybe limit all the NPCs, but not player charectors. My main guy is a Dunmer too though, so that wouldn't really bother me one iota. heh heh Jen
  21. Ack... thanks Ben. I hate steam. Fortunately I still have it installed since dling and patching Empire Total War :( Jen.
  22. So, having sorted out all the issues I was experiencing when I first reinstalled, and having got all my plug ins and mods working correctly, I realised something was missing... I have the GOTY so I don't need KotN or SI, but I don't have the rest of the official DLCs... Mehrunes Razor and the like So I went to go get them. Clicked the link from TES home... Apparently, the official DLC site for Oblivion is borked... its down for maintainence... and has been for almost 10 days now. Any suggestions? Did they move it and the links foodled or have they actually closed it down? Jen
  23. I was playing with this last night, and I'm genuinely struggling to recreate this issue. The only thing I can think of is you have an animation for standing up thats clashing with this one (try disabling your animation mods, one at a time) or a hotkey clash with a different scripted mod that I probably don't have. Sorry bud. :(
  24. Actually I didn't. I found it. Its not "specifically" a german mod, at least I don't think it is and the description is in English, but its "The Kamael" custom race mod, which adds the Kamael race from Lineage II. Actually found it quite by accident whilst playing with the CS trying to update a few things in preparation for (yet another) new toon. Thanks for the help anyways. 8)
