Issues with Setsuna Training Dummy mod
Jenrai replied to chaospearl's topic in Oblivion's Mod troubleshooting
FCOM Archery maybe? I don't use it, but I would tend to think the only mods its gonna have a scrap with would be ones that alter the way your exp is configured, either Archery specific (if I remember rightly, FCOM Archery does, as do a couple of others) or overall experience mods, such as leveeling mods, or the major overhauls. If you are using OBSE, it'd probably be a good idea posting that load order so Razor and the other guys that do use it could take a nosey and see if they notice any potential conflicts. Good Luck. Jenrai -
Argh! I should have thought of that. Especially seeing as I'm the one thats always telling people not to change their graphics settings in-game, but to use the control panel for whatever their card is to do it... now I feel really dumb. See, your in-game settings are not "true" settings - that is to say, its not your graphics card that enforces them - its your game telling your card 'Look, I'm using these bloody settings, and if you don't like it, tough!' . Unfortunately, most of the time, your card won't like it, and because your game has got arsey with your card, your card gets arsey back, saying 'well, if thats the way your gonna behave... I'ma not letting you have any of my awesomeness!' and pulls the plug. Ok, so thats not the way it actually goes down. Thats just more entertaining than filling this forum with 10 pages of technical gobbledigook that wouldn't mean anything to anyone. Basically, change the settings in your control panel to whatever you want to run the game with. Including any lighting, texture size & detail settings, AA & AS settings that you want to use for the game, and that should get you going. I hope. =] Good Luck. Jenrai

And run Boss again matey. Deadly Reflex and UV should both be lower down your load order than that. Read the text output from Boss too. There's some handy tips on there about dodgy/conflicting mods. If you're still having problems, you might have to disable/remove DR and UV until we can get to the bottom of em. I know they are both great mods (hell, I wouldn't still be playing the game if it wasn't for these two and FCOM) but they change a heckuva lotta things and add a lot of scripting to pretty much everybody, which makes troubleshooting other issues rather tricky with them active. Good Luck. Jenrai

CTD Every time When Loading Outdoor Area
Jenrai replied to pje122's topic in Oblivion's Mod troubleshooting
Knowing Bben, his guides cover this, buuuttt: Transitioning between areas is an auto-save trigger. Do you have autosave enabled? If so, disable it. Reason I ask is autosave in Oblivion is glitchy as hell, and will ultimately lead to corrupted saves. Thats not a mod issue. Its a a fault embedded deep in the coding of the vanilla game. Do try not to worry too much about the conflict generator OBMM uses. Its a bit of a drama queen. If you have one mod that places a dagger in the furthest easterly reaches of a particular cell, and another one that places a daisy in the furthest westerly reaches of that same cell, OBMM will tell you these are conflicting mods. The mods that appear in the right hand side of your OBMM list, as you no doubt know, are ones installed via OMOD. Most of these will still appear in your load order. Mods that don't are ones that directly change vanilla game items, which we usually call replacers. These tend not to use an ESM/ESP file (as they don't need it) which is why they don't appear in your load order. Most replacers are what I'd call minor mods, only changing a few small things and therefore nothing major to worry about, but that doesn't mean they can't cause problems. They can. And on to your more specific issue - due to the immense graphic and processing resource hog that is the exterior Oblivion world (thats not a complaint, its a statement of fact - the game wouldn't be what it is without that) and the number of cells/shaders/creatures/plants/textures/meshes/yougetthebloodyidea that are loaded everytime you transition to an external cell, pretty much anything in your load order can and almost definately will be affecting that transition, so yeah, it could be a mod specific problem, and not one thats going to be particularly easy to track down. Not to mention that a lot of mods change things that you probably wouldn't think they'd change, and some change things that they probably shouldn't change. Anyways... there's nothing in your load order thats jumping up and smacking me in the head, but you might want to search the Nexus file server for a handy little utility named BOSS (Better Oblivion Sorting Software) to reorganise it. For a start, the only time Shivering Isles should be down there is if you're currently questing in the Isles (which you aren't, obviously) and have ran into some problem there that needs attention. (again, Bben probably covers load orders and BOSS in his article) Try that, and if you've still got an issue, or this one's not gone away, let us know. Good Luck. Jenrai -
Mods not showing up on OBMM
Jenrai replied to Roughnecks2277's topic in Oblivion's Mod troubleshooting
Noooo... don't advise peeples to do that! I actually got banned from a tech support forum I used to use for that! Apparently people are all completely dumb and therefore can only be allowed to use their computers exactly the way microshaft, the UAC, and the Feds want em to or the world will endz! Srsly! Ahem... Nah. Seriously. I did get banned, but I'm not bitter. I already firebombed that particul... I'll stop there before I incriminate myself further. But supposedly, if you've the UAC on your system, and you've disabled it, and something goes wrong, be it UAC related or not, Microsoft can actually refuse you any support on the grounds you've done something to your system that they never advise and, if it was down to them, a "regular user" wouldn't be able to do anyways. One question... does anyone actually use any support from mircoshaft anyways? ;) Happy hunting. Jenrai -
Hey there matey. Welcome back. I don't know about the Nexus being dowin because I can't access it from work, however, by far and away the best site for tutorials, general information and modding FAQs is the Construction Set wiki. I also foudn quite a few vids on youtube, though with one or two exceptions, have to admit they were a wee bit... well... crap. No offence to anyone that makes em, but it was kinda like those bloody annoyin Win7 ads where they try to tell you everything about whatever in 7 seconds. Ya, the CS wiki is defo the place to look as far as I'm concerned. Happy Modding. Jenrai

I can only speak from personal experience of course, and I don't use a patched exe, so I honestly can't tell you whats going with OBSE there. However, due to the fact I line my pockets with a bit of extra cash by building and maintaining high performance PCs specifically for gaming, that experience is perhaps a little higher than most peoples, though I would always advise people to learn to tweak their systems themselves, as they know better than me what they like and it will help them troubleshoot in the future, but hey-ho. On my personal playing install (important difference. :D ) I run QTP, Full B&M Better Cities, high rez texture replacers for all races, and hi rez faces, & armor & weapon replacers (where they are available. Modelling is something I just can't seem to get my head around so I can't make them for myself. /sadface) and Region Revive, Lake Rumare & AFK Weye, so yeah, whilst I do get drops in FPS around the IC, I do know its the actual drop I'm noticing, not so much the resulting FPS. I run on an XP 64bit system, not because I think theres anything wrong with Win 7 but because I've kinda fallen out with microshaft due to bad experiences with Vista. I know, I know, everyone had a bad experience with Vista. Well, I took it personally, especially when their response was "Well, we did kinda tell you we released it as a Beta for the public to test for us." And then they charged us £100 for the pleasure. **nk*rs. Anyways. I was making a point... ah yes... depending on your videocard's memory and processing power, you're going to take a hit around the IC if you're running a lotta things that affect that area, regardless. Patching up the ram might stabilize it, but it won't eliminate that hit. What would lessen the hit further than patching up the RAM is just using better RAM. I noticed a huge, and thats not an understatement, huge difference in just the general power & performance of my system when I finally managed to afford to be able to switch it up to Corsair RAM. I didn't take the amount up. Just the make. People think its just a name, but it isn't. Its not a pair of Nike trainers. When it comes to computers, most of the time, you really do get what you pay for. I'm not daft enough to think money is no object for everyone (hell, I had to scrounge and save like a bloomin vulture to be able to afford that update, but it was well worth it) but if the kick is that bad for you it might be worth considering. Especially seeing as I don't think you'd be here asking this if your four gig patch actually had any notable effect. I don't know if OBSE does shoot them down, but even if it does, more or less every mod these days requires OBSE, so loosing that probably isn't a valid option. Happy Hunting. Jenrai

It sounds like you are just trying to run the game beyond the range of your graphics card or monitor matey. Are you sure thats the only resolution it will run on, or just the highest. Before you start to try and troubleshoot any graphics issue, always make sure your drivers for your gpu are bang up to date, and that you've checked the card makers website, as they can probably tell you a lot more than any of us. Good Luck. Jenrai

or once its installed you can launch it by checking the little green box in the bottom left hand corner of the Wrye Bash window if you launch through wrye or if you launch through OBMM by clicking on the "launch Oblivion" button at the top of the line of buttons on the right. The first time you launch through OBMM after installing OBSE you'll get a pop up explaining that it supports OBSE and will use the OBSE launcher, and unless you hold down control whilst clicking ok to acknowledge that it will keep on telling you its launching through OBSE every time you launch it. If its installed correctly. :D Happy hunting. Jenrai

Oh, and Bben, without resorting to TodaY's suggestion (I want to be a happy millionaire, not a wanted terrorista - I have videogames for that!) I'm afraid it seems were stuck at the same place. Ho hum. :( Jenrai

Install and run CCleaner. By default, it opens on the cleaner tab (just to be awkward the tabs are down the left hand side of the window instead of at the top - Cleaner, Registry, tools, and one other random one that I don't ever remember) The Cleaner tab is for memory. It'll kill things you don't need - temporary files like installer detrius (gotta love that install shield. Never removes anything) - Its like someone gave your recycle bin teeth and its not afraid to use em. Useful little gadget in itself but CCleaner comes into its own in the: Registry Tab. (The next one down) Essentially, it goes through your Registry at 3 times the speed of light, looking at every single entry. It then goes through your entire HDD (even quicker) looking for the files that the registry is saying are there. If they are not there it finds them and (usually) corrects the registry to point to the right place. If they are not on your computer at all it wipes the Registry entry. You would be surprised how many things add entries to the registry. Its the bane of all Windows based operating systems, and windows is woefully inefficient at cleaning it itself. The number one cause of slowdown & crashes on windows based PC's is a funked up registry. I've seen some belters working on other peoples comps... upwards of 6,000 errors. That was quite extreme though. Basically, just click on this tab and click check for errors (or whatever) and it'll do its magic little search. Then it'll launch a pop up. Click "fix all errors" and it'll ask you if you want to make a back up of the registry before its worked its magic. Say yes. I've never know it cause issues but hey, better to be safe than sorry. By default, this back up is saved to your my documents folder. When its finished run it again. And again, just to be sure. Reason for this is that even CCleaner can only clean one level of entries at a time in the registry (because the one above it will always link to the faulty one below it, and as it actually points at something, CCleaner won't touch it until it doesn't) Then reboot your computer. You should be good to crack on with installing/playing now. Hope its helped. Good luck. Jenrai

First FCOM Load Order - Look over and suggestions
Jenrai replied to eatdamuffin's topic in Oblivion's Mod troubleshooting
Personal taste more than potential problem; Don't run MMM extra wounding with DR. Makes things real easy. Almost every time you hit someone you'll wound them, allowing you to immediately run them through and end fights real fast. /bigyawn. Took most of the challenge out of FCOM for me until I figured that one out. note- You say you've not encountered any problems yet - please stop trying to fix it if its not broken. Or you will encounter problems and they will come thick and fast. ;) Happy Hunting. Jenrai -
Well, we could tell you the ID's of the crystals, but I can pretty much garauntee it would be at least half wrong in your load order. Your best bet for obtaining those is to load Midas in the CS, find the crystals and get the ID codes. Then boot up whatever load order management tool you use, get the load number for midas and replace the first two digits of the hex (almost assuredly going to be 01 when you open it in the CS, unless you open every single mod you have loaded along with it) and that will give you your player.additem code. Example: Crystal01: ID in CS is 01005C4E Midas Spells esp number in load order is 1A Your final console code will be; player.additem 1A005C4E 1 Assuming you only want one of them. (the number on the end is how many of said item you want) Keep in mind when using this method that certain quest items do not function correctly if you have the wrong number of them in your inventory. EG Rumare Slaughterfish Scales for Alewin Merrowind - he wants 12. If you have 13 he thinks "Oooh, you cheating little **fatherless child**!" and so won't take them and you can't complete the quest. (Actually, he doesn't, but that sounds more entertaining that what really happens -and I think the UOP fixxed that particular one anyways but its a good instance of the case in point) Alternatively, if you're more confident with the CS than console codes, add a player owned chest with all the crystals in to the basement of Midas' shop. You could even place respawning Sigil Stones in there or somethin. Hey, why not, you're already cheating, might as well do it properly *evil glare* Just kidding. ;) Good Luck Jenrai

Whilst I don't have even the slightest clue what Opera is matey, I think you should be good on a broadband/DSL connection. I use Mozilla Firefox on my system, my brother uses google chrome on his, and neither of use have experienced any problems downloading anything that were linked to either browser, and we both run without download manager support. Hmm... wonder if he's noticed I deleted that from his compiter yet.... *wicked grin* Jenrai

Yeh, noticed that. Perhaps connected to the fact that certain "pin peeps to things wit arrow shots" mods pin female charectors more often. And the awesome "killtastic!" mod with high physics seems to send women flying that little further. Me's wondering if havoc acts differently on the different skeletons or replacers. Down Syndrome. Thats just ebil. lol. Though they certainly do seem to have problems. Jenrai

Okay... sounds like a fun one. Firstly, the game auto-saves on fast travel by default. Loose that if you haven't already. Auto-save is buggy as hell, causing regular CTDs and eventually corrupted saves. Thats not mods, thats a problem with the original autosave feature. Quick save seems to be free of these issues, but if you are going to use it, delete the quick saves and make full saves to replace them regularly. I generally use quick saves for no longer than an hour or two, or if I get my hands on something really cool or complete a quest, then make a full save in a new slot and delete the quick saves. Next, look see how long you can stay ingame for. Unfortunately, due to Beth rushing it out for the X360 Launch date, Oblivion was never all that stable to begin with, so once we started modding it, it was bound to get worse. However, if you're like me you wouldn't still be playing the game if it wasn't modded. My game tends to crash maybe once or twice a night, and for how I've got it set up, I consider that perfectly acceptable. So the next thing to look at is probably how frequently you crash. How long is it before you crash? Just randomly, but regularly enough to make the game unplayable? Or does it seem to be at around the same length of time (for example everytime after spending say, 20 minutes outside). Reason I ask is that Oblivion can be quite the graphical resource hog, particularly in that immense wilderness, and even more so when modded. It could be a sign that your graphics card is on its way to silicon heaven if the crashes are frequent and usually after roughly the same length of time. PLLLEEEEAAAAASSSEEE don't run out and buy a new card just yet on my say so... lets see if we can get to the bottom of any other problem that might be causing this first. Just figured I'd give you fair warning. For troubleshooting purposes, deactivate Streamline & DR. These two make a whole heckuva lotta changes to a whole heckuva lotta things, making troubleshooting an individual issue near impossible with them active. In fact, unless you're on a low-end system, you might want to get rid of streamline altogether, unless you've noticed big changes. Personally, on mid range systems, the five or six extra FPS I noticed it bought me in fights outside weren't worth the trade-offs in general performance and quality, and on high end systems it like as not won't buy you anything. Next, start looking at your wilderness affecting mods... of which you appear to have quite a few. Begin by taking out any that have altered the water. Well, thats how I'd start, as frankly I don't spend a right lot of time in it, and there's a heckuva lot of things that can be changed beneath the surface that can severely affect performance that you generally wouldn't notice, let alone care about, unless you were the Little Mermaid incarnate. This is particularly significant if your game seems to slow down or crash more often around the heavy water areas, like Lake Rumare or the coastal regions. Next, I'd start looking at maybe Enhanced Weather. I know, its a cracking mod that fixes something Beth should have included in the game in the first place, but it can slow down your game, and anything that can slow it down can ultimately crash it. Remember, you don't need to deactivate a whole bunch of mods at once, and if you do, you're likely gonna struggle to figure out just what was causing the problems. Go for one or two at a time and playtest for a while. One crash might just be a fluke, so never take the first one as fatal either. If none of this seems to help, holler, and I'm sure someone else will have some advice to offer if I can't help further. Good Luck. Jenrai

Mods not showing up on OBMM
Jenrai replied to Roughnecks2277's topic in Oblivion's Mod troubleshooting
Are you maybe using Win7 or Vista, Roughnecks? If so, I hope you didn't install to the default directory. The UAC incorporated into Vista and Win7 does not like mods (or anything else that modifies any programs) being installed to the Program Files directory. One or two users have reported successfully getting away with it, but most seem to have problems. If you have a UAC enabled operating system, but haven't installed to the program files folder, make sure you're running OBMM as an Admin. Just being signed into an admin account won't cut it. Right click on OBMM, navigate to properties or whatever, and set it to run as adminstrator. Beyond that, I'm out of guesses. Bben's got some ace guides on the TESNexus Articles server, including running mods with Win7 & Vista. Might be worth checking them out. Failing that, or ifg you are running on a non-UAC operating system, we might need more information. Good Luck. Jenrai -
Ooh. Nice catch Vagrant0. Didn't even think about that (probably just because I've never had the error) Have you maybe installed Oblivion to a virtual drive, Retribution? If you have and you've moved that drive, or the CS is looking for it in the wrong drive, that could explain this. Alternatively, or if you can't repoint the CS to look for it in the right drive, try it with the disk in your DvD/CD drive. It may be a problem with your virtual drive software, but I have the game virtually mounted too (hey, I have a terrabyte and a half to use up, so I might as well! Plus it saves all that faffing around with disks without running the risk of a dodgy crack.) and I've never seen this. I would have thought that if this was the issue, it would occur whenver you try to work in the CS, but hey, TESCS works in mysterious ways! Good Luck. Jenrai

help i cant download mods from tesnexus
Jenrai replied to pheonixflare's topic in Oblivion's Discussion
As the guys said above, welcome matey. We are a friendly bunch around here, so no one is gonna give you any flack. Just out of curiosity, you're not trying to download the mods from the forums are you? The file servers are here. Happy modding. :) Jenrai -
Argh! There be thread-jacker here! :pirate: 1. Start your own thread; I'm not a mod so this isn't a barracking. Just a friendly suggestion to save confusion, like Fonger said. 2. Things to try in the meantimes: Thrillseeker: Firstly, try rebuilding your .ini (the one in the my docs folder with your saves... not the one in the Oblivion directory. Don't ever change that or I'll send the winged monkeys after you) Its easy enough to do. Just rename the .ini. For trouble shooting purposes I usually switch it to Oldoblivion.ini. That'll force the game to rebuild your .ini file when it starts up. If that doesn't work, Delete the one you're not using and try this: Do you have OBSE installed? This can happen when mods that need OBSE are not detecting it. Go here and download it. If you've already got it, make sure its launching the game, not the vanilla launcher. If you launch through Wrye Bash, there's a lil green check box in the bottom left hand corner of the Wrye main window, make sure thats checked. If you launch through OBMM, make sure you agree to the lil pop up that comes up asking you if you want to associate OBSE with OBMM when you first launch the game through it. If you're sure you've got it and neither of those works, make a short cut to the OBSE launcher (should be in your Oblivion directory, top level, NOT the data folder. ITS NOT A MOD) and point that shortcut at Oblivion.exe. If you still get message, post a load order article in a new thread and me or one of the other lovely folks around here will see what we can do to help. Articking: Are you sure you installed Wyre Python? Preferably after installing Python? Did you, perchance, install the later version of Python to support Blender and Gimp afterwards? Make sure you install the older version of Python (that Wrye uses) last, and if you did, delete the lot and start again. Read the Wrye homepage. Then read it again. No offence, but you've defo missed something. I have both Python 5 & 6 (iirc - numbers might be wrong) installed as I use Blender, gimp, & Wrye Bash, but when I installed the later versions over the older version that Wrye uses, I got a similar error to you. So, install the versions of Python and Wrye Python that it points you at AFTER you install the newer version for Gimp/Blender support. On the bright side, you should only need to do all this once. Good luck guys. Jenrai

When you first launch OBMM after installing OBSE it should say something like "for the sakes of not having to answer the same question a million times, YES, this program does launch OBSE. Press and hold Control when you click OK to avoid seeing this message everytime you launch the game" ... or something like that. Should have. If it didn't it might not be. Best way to find out is to try a very heavy scripting specific mod that you know requires OBSE. If it seems to work right, it probably does. Analogue Controllers for Oblivion are some what... hmmm. Cr*p would be the word that springs to mind. It was obviously designed for the XBox 360s launch, so it should support them by default. Unfortunately, it doesn't. There are a lot of tips on editing your .ini to get em working, or there's a wee small program named "Joy2key" I uploaded to the Nexus file site specifically for folks who don't know how to or wish to start playing around in the files, which can make Joypads & Joysticks emulate any number of keyboard and mouse commands. Its free, and as it uses commands that are already available in Windows, you don't need to install anything, just run it. Uninstalling is as simple as deleting the folder you unzipped it to. One thing if you do choose to use J2K though - as its not mine, I decided against adding anything to the upload, and Ryo, the author, is Japanese, so the Read Me provided might kinda get lost in translation. Read the uplaod/endorsements thread or the long description if you get stuck with it. Jenrai

We might need a touch more specific info matey; Load order? See bben's "how to post a load order" article on the Nexus File Servers. Did you only try it with one toon? Yeah? Try it with another. Did you try waiting? Some mod caused issues can be time specific. Hang around (You've got Martin in toe, so make sure you'll be safe. An Inn sounds like a good idea) for about 12 hours and then try it again. I've recently seen a post similar to this, but that was a CTD on leaving Weynon Priory, I think. Unfortunately, waiting an hour solved the issue for the poster so I've no idea what was actually causing the CTD. Good Luck. Jenrai

Slowdown should be expected (lower FPS at times)
Jenrai replied to andyd's topic in Oblivion's Discussion
Yah, Vagrant's spot on. Its a simple case of the more thats on your screen the more performance it demands from your system. I wouldn't worry too much about that if you're getting a steady 40fps though. Thats almost double TV, and only slightly lower than the estimated maximum that the human brain can comprehend anyways. What you'll actually be noticing is the tranisition between 60fps and 40fps. Not the difference, as the human brain can't figure things out that quick either. ;) Jenrai
