As an avid fan of FF games, I've played XIV/ARR, and I can attest to the love that the game and its developers have for III. The level of detail in reproducing entire dungeons is impressive. Yoshi-P himself has said that III is his favorite FF game of all time.
However, despite my love for the FF franchise, I couldn't get into III on the DS remake. It felt slow, clunky, and awkward, and the storytelling was simple and not engaging. The mechanics were complex, and the DS friend code feature required to unlock the Onion Knight class was frustrating. This raises the question of whether the DS version's bells and whistles only serve to slow the game down and make it frustrating.
Nonetheless, as III is beloved by many, there must be something great about it. Perhaps it's the story, exploration, characters, or depth that makes it worth playing. It's worth considering whether digging out a translation of the NES version would be a better option than playing the DS version.
