  1. I admit I was wrong to question the cause of the bottleneck. And I'm aware of what SkyBoost does -- read my post. Just doesn't make sense in context of what I just said. That being said, I haven't offered any solution to reducing GPU usage, sooo... I'll scamper back to helping with what I'm decent with. Hope Dingen's suggestion helps, good luck!
  2. Would I pay for it? Sure would! Will it happen? Sure won't! The current projects are basically forcefully hacking multiplayer into Skyrim and they'll likely never be stable enough to be marketable. If Bethesda wanted to implement multiplayer they would need to consider this problem and basically do engine-level adjustments to account for the plethora of problems that would arise. This would likely cost more than it was worth in development and QA. Then they would need to pretty much redesign the game to have some semblance of online balance, and seeing as single player has not even a passing concept of balance it's unlikely this would be an easy task for designers, either.
  3. Could be mistaken. Are you running SkyBoost? If not, try it, and if it offers no tangible improvement it's probably your GPU. I'd say it probably is your GPU and I was just mistaken, but it's a decent way to test.
  4. To me 20% load sounds like your CPU is being underused, not that it's sufficient. Quad core at such a low speed doesn't sound powerful enough to me, but I'm not hardware savvy enough to tell you with certainty what's happening.
  5. It's your CPU, since you initially doubted it. Doesn't matter if your other games run fine, Skyrim likes a powerful CPU and having a weak one will throttle performance. Get a quad core. As for not updating, you're basically hamstringing yourself. I suppose if you hate Steam that badly you'll have to do without all the significant optimization that Bethesda has done, and the version-dependent software like SkyBoost that also increases performance (often incredibly). You can just shut Steam off when you're not gaming. It doesn't remain on at all times and it doesn't need to be unless you're gaming.
  6. I'm not going to be able to help much beyond random suggestions. First and foremost download SkyBoost, which will alleviate CPU bottlenecking in CPU heavy portions of the game. The second problem sounds as if it might be ATI specific, they're not known for being particularly quick with their drivers lately. My best idea would be verifying the integrity of your game files VIA Steam and subsequently installing the latest version of ATI drivers possible, then checking to see if anyone else has texture transparency issues with ATI drivers and Skyrim and what they suggest through Google. Sorry to not be more helpful, but good luck.
  7. Not sure if this falls under the mantle of console modding or not. You're not likely to get support since modding consoles is a ban here unless that doesn't apply to save games. Even then I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to do what you want. Get a PC if you want to mod the game in a stable and meaningful fashion.
  8. Regardless of potential answer, I agree with James. Not sure for the same reason. Frankly I feel you're underestimating the work, personally. You're talking about a huge modification on top of a huge modification... I've tried balancing online games with netcode already attached (Neverwinter Nights) and even that is a task worth hundreds of man hours of work. This is a game with no netcode and no PvP support and absolutely no balance... I mean, I wish you luck but I think your team may consider scaling back your intentions. I would sooner run after a stable mod that lets me, say, play over LAN with my girlfriend than an unstable mod that might let me play a very laggy MMO.
  9. So as I understand it Skyrim Online started having problems distributing their source or having their source used in the project formed by the trinity of the three development groups, or...? I have to admit the fact that you appear to have tried to refund them does mean a lot, more so if you weren't even trying to keep the money to begin with (obviously the comment shown in the screenshot by the last poster wasn't done so in a particularly rational fashion).
  10. Is that a bad thing? No. There are advantages and disadvantages to the current policy. I would say overall it works well.
  11. Pretty much. I'm just amazed at the never ending stream of people that come in and immediately post about their pirated copy not working. You'd nearly expect them to just dry up one day, but... nope.
  12. Stable CPU overclock will help you in a situation like this since you're probably entirely limited by your CPU. Getting a boost of 200 Mhz netted me an increase of around 40% more FPS, something like 22 -> 30. I think you can grab a quad-core i5 3.3 GHz off of Newegg right now for around $200, it's what I intend to get when I've got change to spare.
  13. No, you misunderstand me. It's one thing for a site to follow the law and remove content they receive notices about in a timely fashion, and it's an entirely different thing to take it as far as the Nexus has. In a dozen years of using mod sites I haven't seen a single site remove offending content so quickly (without angry lawyers involved) and punish people so harshly as I have here. This site is an anomaly. That's why you get pirates coming on here, saying they're pirates, and getting banned in their first 30 minutes. Nowhere else does that, so they never expect a ban when doing so. Well, nowhere else I know.
  14. Grab SkyBoost if you haven't. Even if you do, as the above user notes, you need a better processor. You could probably flip open a monitor and see that your video card will barely be used at all with a dual core. Mine gets 15% - 35% on Battlefield 3/Skyrim because I've got a dual core 2.4 GHz system. Grab an i5 if you want to actually use most of your shiny video card.
  15. I can definitely agree to that. I was glad they made the armor (and clothing) for women at least somewhat believable, which is more than most fantasy games nowadays.
  16. I don't disagree with you in any of that (well, the politics are medieval enough to me, but that's not really important). I just don't think you need to be rude to someone who has different expectations from the piece than you. I can't disagree with him because if Bethesda took the issue of sexism, considered it, and actually made conflicts in the game world based on it, their setting would have been stronger. Why? Would've felt easier to see as being a real world, where sometimes that kind of thing does happen. But I don't think it would've added that much, not when they could have focused on the far more prominent racial tensions and Nordic/Thalmor supremacy issues or a plethora of other lore/realistic expectations issues that you never even get to see.
  17. This is vague wording on their part. The chances they included a full model creation tool are slim, and modders will need to probably continue relying on Blender + Nifskope to convert models. Bethesda would have no reason to independently produce 3d modeling tools they could freely give to modders as it would cost them an atrocious amount. They probably use their own suite of 3d modeling applications they lease. As for physics editing, that'd require reasonably low-level access to the game, which may or may not happen. I'm leaning towards the latter, as this would require some significant forethought on Bethesda's part and I frankly do not think they are a organized enough developer to have exposed that to end users. I really hope they did, and maybe I just don't have enough faith... all the more reason why I don't want to get excited now and become disappointed later.
  18. Going after straw men isn't going to prove me wrong. This isn't about sexism. This is about something that's not generally associated with medieval times (gender equality) showing up in a medieval setting. If they had a democratic government, I would be utterly confused as to why democracy is in my medieval setting unless someone wanted to explain this to me so that I could continue to believe in the credibility of the setting. He wants to know why gender neutrality is in the setting, and he has seen no explanation. And Medieval Europe was sexist. And this is largely a setting with those undertones. As I said, I don't care. I'm too busy wondering why my Khajiit can enter cities so easily without being known to be the Dragonborn. Distracts me more than the gender issue, which I wouldn't really care about even if the game didn't have a plethora of other lore issues to reel over. But, feel free to believe what you want.
  19. If only they had learned to place wicker baskets on the moderator's head. They could have avoided a ban to the knee. I do admit I'm surprised this site manages to survive so well when it's so stringently anti-piracy, but I'm not complaining. Plus it's fun to read the ban logs. :teehee:
  20. It's not just a fantasy world. It's a fantasy world with strong medieval trappings. Just because there are dragons and magic doesn't mean that the medieval trappings are completely lost in the fantasy. I find it rude to berate someone for expecting a degree of sexism in a medieval setting just because it's also a fantasy setting. Suspension of disbelief is also not some all encompassing thing, different people come to a piece with different expectations. He expected a degree of sexism because of the medieval trappings of the setting, saw none, and saw no explanation for its absence. He found that to ruin some of his immersion. Seems pretty reasonable to me. Personally, I don't care. I don't see a problem with his complaint, though, because he makes a fair point.
  21. Link doesn't even work. Have to admit would like to hear the second side of the story on this, but I won't pry. Might want to consider your credibility if you intend to go on with this project -- impossible for me to know who is in the right but obviously other people don't think you are.
  22. The more I contemplate these threads the more I realize it's pointless to declare intentions. There's no way to know how powerful the Creation Kit will be and in what areas it will be powerful in. If it's significantly more powerful than the GECK (I doubt it from what I've seen of the game files) then it'll take a while to figure out how to abuse that power. If it's about the same then I'll be tragically bored. If all else fails, a shout that shoots clusters of sweetrolls at high speeds sounds acceptable.
  23. Elaboration/proof on this, anyone? I.e. thread with details. Edit: Neeevermind.
  24. I'm somewhere between agreeing with Thandal and sympathizing with you. I'd actually, you know, contact Steam and ask them if there's a way to connect to their service using your phone as a modem and easily activate games, or if their security is going to make that impossible. They've been really helpful when I've had problems, which is one of the reasons I'm supportive of them. That being said, we would've gotten one DRM or the other. For the vast majority of North American gamers (the majority of which have internet access) I would say Steam is one of the most benign... feel free to compare SecuROM or similar stuff that can be a huge headache. Finally, you might think of just taking your HD out of your computer, putting it in an anti-static bag, taking it to your friend's, using it as the primary drive on their computer, installing what you need, and then re-installing it when you get back home. Not convenient, might be what you're already doing or maybe not. Beats lugging an entire computer around if that's what you're currently doing.
