  2. Ok, boys and girls, I'm kinda old, so maybe it's senility at work, but lets see if I have an understanding.

    First off, the game is owned by Bethesda. Second, the CK is owned by Bethesda. Third, everything created for the game by freelance authors is actually owned by Bethesda... What is surprising, is that Bethesda and Steam are allowing ANY KIND of profit from their game and tools. (Even if it is just Steam bucks, at least it will pay for a new game someday) I have modded for other games, and I mod Skyrim, too. I haven't released anything for Skyrim as I suck, and/or am too slow at it to complete a mod before 5 of the same thing has already been released. I can remember the whole profit taboo as I was modding for Resident Evil 4 and on the site I mentioned that I would pay for a mod that brought true mouse look to RE4. Someone jokingly asked how much I was willing to pay, and playing along I believe I said something like around half the price of the game, as I am left handed with injuries at the time. Within hours, the moderator threatened me and put me on probation over fear the site would be shut down.

    Now, as for the piracy thing... Some people will never pay for games, so forget them ever paying for mods. This could become a whole new black market. One buys, saves the mod, gets their money back, then shares the mod with who knows how many others. It's sad, but a very real possibility. And of course, modder content will be stolen to be sold under another name, crooks are crooks, and the only thing is to take it as a complement that your work was good enough to be stolen as you have no real legal standing.

    This leaves the legitimate modders limited choices. One choice is that continue to create content because they love it and offer it for free with the possibility that it will be plagiarized with the only recourse being to get the stolen work removed. (If that even flies) There is a consideration that if you are REALLY good at it you may be hired by a game producer. Another choice is to defect to the paid mod route, and deal with the complaints, refunds and pirates. And finally, the apocalyptic choice, to pull their content and keep it to themselves for fear of it being stolen by profiteers. This may be the actual swan song of the modding community.

    I sincerely hope I am misunderstanding the situation in it's entirety. Please...Tell me I'm wrong.

  3. The question of whether modders deserve payment for their work is a no-brainer... Damn right they do. Everyone who creates something desirable should be rewarded. The modding community as a whole has been uncharacteristically generous. If we sat back and thought about it, who among us would not be able to think of a time when we thought "Wow! That was excellent, I would have paid $xx for that." Or at least, "I can't believe that was free." Doom 3 had too many to mention. The Heart of the Dead for TESIV (Oblivion), Willow for FONV, and many for TESV. The ones I mentioned are not the only ones, just off the top of my head for examples.

    I believe if a mod is DLC quality it should be at least a shadow of the DLC price. But then, I believe everyone who plays a game should pay for the game. There are games I have bought upon their release, and there have been times I have had to wait til the price drops, or the games were on sale, as IRL, income can fluctuate for various reasons. There is no shame in waiting for something you want. Over the past 53 years I have been reasonably wealthy, and desperately poor. I served my country in the U.S.M.C. for 6 years, and perhaps I have a morality that no longer exists. I feel that no one is "ENTITLED" to anything without cost. When you can get something free, awesome! But it is extremely unwise to have any expectations. NEVER LOOK A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH and THE ONLY TIME YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO COMPLAIN IS WHEN YOU PAY. PIRACY IS NOT VICTIMLESS... YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE. If you can't afford it, wait til you can. If you want to get that "Pirate Feeling", go buy a boat and a parrot. Also a lot of pirated software contains trojan horse malware. BUY THE GAME!!!

    Free modders should not have any implied warranties. To my knowledge none do. No one can legitimately say "Even if it's free, they have a responsibility to..." NO THEY DON'T! IF someone gave you a car, free, how far could you realistically expect it to go. It is a gamer's SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT to expect the mod to work perfectly on their game. Yes, I believe even a free mod should include clear installation and operation instructions. However, I believe the modder should be frustrated when people complain they have problems simply because they did not read and follow the instructions. Most modders have complete and accurate instructions for their mods, as well as any prerequisite installed content. And, not every mod is going to work with every other mod. DON'T EXPECT IT! When something doesn't work, most modders and the community itself are willing to assist if treated with respect. But, if you are to be rude, crude, and totally unacceptable in any societies we know of today, then, wow, don't be surprised or upset when any chance of help is blown away. I have seen wonderful modders abandon fantastic mods because of grief. RESPECT THE MODDER!!!

    Put yourself in their place... A lot of modders start modding because they feel something is lacking in their game, or just want to shake things up. So, you're just having fun. Then you realize you're onto something. You pour as many hours as you can spare into this project. Then you think, "I bet someone else would like this too." So you double check everything and maybe have some friends and family beta test for you. You get it as perfect as you can. Then you go to the Nexus, and you see the same or similar mod on page 2 of the most recent. "Well, at least I don't have to download THAT ONE". This is what has happened to me. Now what if you don't see any like yours, and you post it, and people like it, and all is great. Then someone says it doesn't work for them. Then someone says, me too. Then they find out your mod is incompatible with another mod. One you never use. So is it then your responsibility to make your free mod compatible? If it's mod compatibility, you may ask for some sort of compatibility, but DON'T EXPECT it! What if your mod requires another mod someone doesn't want to use, should you be held responsible for that as well? What if your mod requires some folders to go in certain locations, and someone skips reading the instructions you took all that time to create, and FUBARs their game? Should you be held responsible? What if your mod is so intricate, some machines won't run it, is that then your responsibility? NO WAY!

    Be real people, the truth of the matter is, MODDERS ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR CHOICES, YOU ARE! If the game developers can't guarantee the base game to run on your machine of unknown configuration, with large scale beta testing, how can you reasonably expect this from an independent modder? If a modder creates something that works only on machines of the same type as his, or only with or without certain mods, and your game or machine doesn't meet any of the criteria, then DON'T EXPECT it to work.

    Now you just remove the mod and play without it. If it has scripts, get a save editor/cleaner. Or, if you feel the game is utterly destroyed, uninstall and reinstall. I have cleaned scripts numerous times. I have uninstalled/reinstalled more times than I can count. If you have any self respect at all, if you have asked for help, and nothing works, politely inform the mod author so others can make an informed choice. And, please, for your own sake, read some of the comments, and read the instructions BEFORE you install any mod.

    As for me, I can now run about any mod I want. Clothing, bodies, textures, quest mods, gameplay mods, glitch and CTD free. To get to this point, I had to remove Hearthfire. I tried everything, even running the game straight vanilla, with and without UOPs, and still my game went wonky. Nothing helps. So no Hearthfire. I run Dawnguard and Dragonborn with NO problems. I bought it, but I can't get a refund, and nothing helps. So, who is responsible? Me.

    Not sure how paid modding would change things. I see it as synonymous with any artistic endeavor. If you love doing something, will doing it for money not be better? Would expectations go up even higher? I would like to think there would be a place for DLC quality mods, and not just 5 minute mods. Maybe that is an idealist outlook. I would love to see some of these talented people get something for their work. It's a roller coaster ride for modders, with praise at the top, and grief at the bottom. It might be a better ride if they received payment on the ride. I have paid for DLC content for years. I would be happy to pay for a DLC (or better) quality mod. But, some people don't bother to pay for the game, why would they pay for mods?

  4. I just know I felt justified eliminating Estormo then Ancano, of course. I agree about burning the embassy, but only after the destruction of every Thalmor in the place, lol. And even if on the Empire's side, killing Thalmors escorting Talos worshippers to their doom. Anyway, still debating the extent and implementation of such a mod. Skyrim will be free!

  5. Not sure if it is possible, or how difficult it would be, but this is my idea... What if, with the help of the Psijics with the new power of the Eye of Magnus, along with Skyrim and The Dragonborn, the Empire, The College of Winterhold, The Dawnguard, The Blades, and the Dragons, the forces of the Thalmor could be knocked down and defeated, and run out of Skyrim, and maybe even the Empire as a whole. Forever. With the White Gold Concordat no longer enforced, and Talos worship restored, the civil war in Skyrim would end. The show of power should be so severe, that every Thalmor that resists is utterly destroyed that the Thalmor would see the futility of any future attempts at trying to force their will against this alliance. This should also serve as a warning to the Empire itself, that Skyrim Will Be Free! This should be done in such a way that elves as a whole are not threatened and maybe even part of this alliance. My apologies if someone has proposed this idea before, I didn't find any before I posted.

  6. I didn't want to, but I guess I'll have to uninstall/reinstall the game or start over again. I don't have script dragon, and have turned off the dlcs and mods, and the game still won't run with skse launcher. This happens about every other full update. I have been playing this game for nearly a year, and with the dlcs, mods and updates, I am beginning to wonder if I'll live long enough to finish it. LOL!
  7. My Skyrim updated to 1.8 yesterday, I downloaded and installed the skse update for 1.8, and the game will not come up with the skse launcher. The game comes up fine with the Skyrim launcher, as long as no skse is involved. Does anyone have v1.8 working with skse?
  8. I am somewhat familiar with the GECK, and Ck's. In Fallout New Vegas, i just altered the stats of the La Longue Carabine to match the Brush Gun. That way I have the .45-70 knockdown with a scoped lever action rifle. I wanted to use the .45-70 ammo because I also use the Hunting Revolver, .45-70 gov. I like to travel fairly light, and this includes ammo. In FO3, however, there is no Scoped Lever Action Rifle. I use the Scoped .44 Magnum, or the Blackhawk .44 Magnum, and want a .44 mag Lever Action Rifle. This way I don't have to pack around a Sniper Rifle as well.

    I will try all your suggestions til I have a solution. Thanks again for your help and advice.

  9. Just as in FO3, I love playing with the revolvers and lever action weapons, but the Brush Gun doesn't have a scope option. The Brush Gun is the only weapon I wish to add a scope to. I don't mind doing the work myself if someone will instruct me, or point me to a detailed tutorial. Thanks to anyone who may help...
  10. I enjoy the revolvers and lever action weapons, but the most powerful lever action rifle in the game doesn't have a scope option, sooo unfair! I tried the Weapon Mod Kits, but when I add a scope to the Lincoln Rifle, my game is a crash fest, remove the mod, no crash. Also, the Lincoln Rifle is the only one I want to mod. I would do it myself if I knew how... And if anyone knows how, or if there is a tutorial with detailed instructions, please let me know, and I will try.
  11. I wasn't accusing everyone who has a problem with piracy. What I was saying is that THOSE THAT DO HAVE A PIRATED GAME SHOULD NOT COMPLAIN when things do not work properly. Nowhere did I state that everyone who has a problem are pirates. Of course there are people who have problems with hardware and drivers, and of course the "lost people". Do not deny that the problem exists however, read the forums, the number of people asking for help for their 'less than legal' game installs. (and getting banned as they should). I agree that the general gaming public are why games are becoming 'dumbed down'. For everyone that doesn't like how the games have changed, there is at least one who likes the changes. That is because there are SO MANY people playing these games. The point is that, while Bethesda games are not perfect, there is a fantastic modding community dedicated to making the games better. Maybe Bethesda's motives are business oriented, we should be glad at least the PC version can be modded, and that Bethesda makes the games easily modded. I own full retail versions of TES and Fallout series, and with the exception of Game of the Year Editions buy DLCs on Steam. I am not rich, not involved with Bethsoft in any way, I am just John Q. Public and grateful for the games, and grateful to the modders that make what I spend on games so worth it.
  12. Ok, as someone who has been reading forum posts forever, here are some basic logical conclusions. First, Bethesda can't just build a game for what each person in the gaming universe likes. Tastes are too varied. There are millions of gamers, many millions world-wide. In this world there are endless opinions about what is great and what is not. Over the years Bethesda has had to walk a crazy line. Some don't believe there should be same-sex relationships or marriages, while some feel it is a basic human right. Some feel that individual quests should not be so intricate and involved while others want each and every quest epic. Some do not want karmic choices to affect the game so that they are free to be as evil as they wish without shutting them out of certain other quests, while some want consequences for actions. Some (everyone) wants superb graphics, while at the same time offering epic gameplay, completely open worlds, and intense realism. Some would like nudity and heavy sexual content, and some don't like any skin exposed. Where Bethesda excels is that they try to find a balance in what has been requested. They can't of course release porno games, just so kids can pull themselves through puberty, but they at least allow for relationships. Also, they do something else, they provide tools to change the game for individual tastes. (Though there might be a wait) If everyone with a complaint would take up modding, the game would be what everyone wants. Those that don't want to or have the spare time to mod should be patient, as eventually the feature they want will be realized. If you can't understand Bethesda's predicament, check out how many varied house mods there are already. We (those of us who can't mod) should bow before the excellent modding community we have. Without them, we are left with a generalized version of the game. The people who are running pirated games HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT ANYTHING! A large part of the problems you are having is due to the fact your game is hacked and cracked, and will never run right. So if your game is having problems with mods, and no one else's does, do not blame the modders, BUY THE GAME! I have a dinosaur computer, Pentium D 2.8 ghz (dual core, barely) 3 gigs ddr2, and the only new component is the Geforce GT 430 2gb graphics card, and my game runs smoothly (40+ fps) with 40 plus mods. (with the correct load order) That doesn't even count the texture mods. Just hang in there people and offer whatever help you can to your favorite modder, or learn the craft and your dreams may come true.
  13. I for one, hope they coexist. I love the Nexus. I am not crazy about autoinstall. I like to open the file up, inspect the paths, and yes, manually install the files. I know there will come a day when downloading and installing the files myself will be over. I don't blame Bethesda, I don't blame Steam, and I don't blame the Nexus. I blame the pirates. Games are expensive to produce, and I don't blame Bethesda or Valve for wanting to protect that investment. Is it inconvenient? You betcha. Another case of the many being punished for the actions of the few.

    I can't imagine the Nexus losing any popularity due to the Steam Workshop. What I see is that even now the Nexus servers are getting overlogged, and what is going to happen when the CK comes out? The modding will go nuclear. Skyrim is that popular. So it may be a good thing to have a bit of division. The Nexus has an incredible modding community! I know that most of these modders will stay with the Nexus. But I believe if the CK is user friendly enough, more and more people will be modding this game. A portion of at least these new modders will use the workshop, easing (potentially) the overflow. (I hope) Steam does have its advantages. I love the diskless reinstalls. I buy most of my games at stores. I want that hard copy. But, even if you buy the games at a store, once it's registered on steam, it's available forever. (And all my game disks stay in their cases protected after the initial install). I do buy expansions and game guides through Steam however.

    I am trying to see all of this in a positive light. Be optimistic, at least the CK won't be Steam only. (Yet)

  14. texture mods do not matter. to be clean it is best to uncheck all the actual esp mods as well as swapping out the scripts you have in scripts folders (asi,skse>plugins and scripts> then save clean 1.4 then reapply mods and scripts.

     

    I still have no idea about update.esm I have never had it checked and asked a while back about it with no answer.

     

    So its better to deactivate all the texture mods while installing the new patch to be on the right side?! I'm asking cause I don't want to have big trouble with mods an patches!

    I didn't uninstall anything, just unchecked mod esp's. Apparently the texture files actually have no bearing on the scripting/programming. Only the esp's have a possibility to affect anything. Started new game though, and everything works great so far. (Haven't tested with mod esp's activated yet) I am preparing to do that momentarily and will give update on the situation later.

  15. I've played the beta last night with the update.esm checked. I only have a few mods running in my game; a few extra items and tytanis.

    Only had a few freeze and audio issues running the game but that could be due to a slight instability with the beta version of SKSE according to the thread in general discussion. It sounds like people who run it without SKSE have little issue.

    Otherwise the beta patch has been an improvement. I'm assuming the final patch will be more stable.

    Thank you! I have been running with the beta skse, and have seen no ill effects, so I thought I would just add some mods to see if anything shakes loose. At the infamous Dragonreach steps getting a full 5 fps over skyboost, and over 10 fps over vanilla 1.3 In houses and dungeons am getting 10 to 15 fps above skyboost readings through fraps. Did the beta replace your .ini files? Mine are the same, but some people are saying their .ini is different after the beta installed.

  16. The 1.4 beta patch works great on my computer and game, increased framerates and all. So I decided to try mods with it, so I checked some in and now I can't remember if there was a check in the box for Update.esm in the mod manager. If someone who is trying the beta and hasn't added mods yet would look in their mod manager and see if there is a check in the box for Update.esm or not and let me know I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
