  1. "Most of my influences come from areas outside of modding, through circumstance rather than design." Honestly, I think the greatest artists have this in common. We've all got a lifetime of experiences inside of us, but it takes courage to tap into them and forge your own path. I've played a ton of mods; many of them are excellent, but Inigo is the only one that's touched my soul. I'm excited to see the conclusion of his story, and where SBC goes after this. :)
  2. Yeah Tannin, you're the bomb. I can't say how many times I had to scorch the earth that was my data folder before MO came along. It started my terrible habit of building complimentary mod profiles instead of actually playing the game though... but that's my own fault. :P Speaking of, have any mod managers made it possible to share mod profiles yet? Kind of like those old compilation overhaul mods, except the manager just downloads everything off the Nexus and orders everything for compatibility? It'd make me happy if the shiny new NMM shipped with that... :)
  3. I like it! I was ready to hate the redesign, but it isn't giving off a mobile-first vibe and everything is better. I'm really looking forward to seeing the individual mod pages. :)

  5. Survey completed. Congrats on the position! The main thing I really care about: margins. So many websites are ditching margins and its making me sad. My screen is wide and my eyes get tired scanning. It's such a small thing but it drives me crazy.

If paid mods are like a craft fair, where the most talented artist go out to get a little bit back from the hobby they've enjoyed for years... ...then what happened here is sort of like if the neighbors of all of the hobbyists drove out to the fair, and ran through it flipping tables and defecating on everything screaming "COME BACK AND MAKE THINGS FOR US! YOU DON'T BELONG HERE! WHAT HAPPENED TO COMMUNITY??"
  7. Well, I think we've all learned a very valuable lesson about community today: a strong community can remain strong forever, as long as nothing changes ever.
  8. Note: All snark is satirical. I'm actually really impressed with the speed and composure you've kept up in response to all this. Edit 2: Dammit! This is the first time I've ever edited a post; I didn't realize the edit would replace the whole comment. I had this whole joke going where I built up like I was going to ramble about the paid mods, and then started ranting about the mobile site stuff. Oh well, have fun with the rest of the comments. ;)

That's like saying facebook isn't a business, just a cool place to share photos and keep up to date with your friends. That's what it is to the *user*. Not to the company. That isn't to say that the Nexus' operation is comparable to Facebook, but just that there will be competition. Since the competition is over talent, both sides will have to do their best to appeal to the modders. That's a good thing. A lot of the business practices that people are worried about are easily avoided: support what you love, and ignore what you don't. Support the Nexus by donating or disabling adblock, support the modders by donating, and don't use paid mods that are stolen, cheap, or unfinished (or don't buy any, if you don't support paid mods). Be the change you want to see in the world.
  10. In response to post #24638949. What if you're 14 and don't have an account for donated money to go into? I don't know why anyone would shame an author simply for allowing donations. Even if someone did... why should anyone care? I do agree the Nexus (and everyone else) should keep a level head, adapt, and keep moving forward though. :)
  11. In response to post #24636769. #24637174 is also a reply to the same post. I was mainly focusing on how the long term effects of competition between these companies themselves should be good for modders. Yes, things are unbalanced right now, but I think they'll smooth out eventually over time as the bugs are ironed out. Things like ethical codes haven't really been established yet seeing as how recent the changes are. We're already seeing progress on that front, however: The Nexus is giving modders an easy way to give or deny permission to other modders who would like to use their work commercially, which is a good first step. Hopefully some sort of code of conduct is reached in the coming months amongst the community themselves.
  12. I think the competition will be good for modders in the long run. There's actually pressure now for the Nexus to get these donation updates out there before they start hemorrhaging talent. That's awesome. Hopefully we'll see the Nexus and Valve going back and forth trying to sweeten the pot over the years to come. Despite all of the controversy, I'm glad that the idea that a modder's time is valuable has finally been brought into the public eye.
