  1. A quick update: I launched Steam yesterday and got a third (!!!) Steam client update. After this update, I could play Skyrim with 99% of my mods active (as opposed to the past few days when it didn't work with all the mods de-activated). My suggestion: Launch Steam, get the update, see if it works. If not, start turning off batches of mods to see if it helps. P.S. Don't forget to make sure you're launching Steam and Skyrim with admin rights (including SKSE/NMM).
  2. Update: My bad! I forgot to launch SKSE as an administrator. Everything seems to be working fine. Thanks Steam for the update (who knew that you guys monitored these forums???).
  3. This just in: When I started up Steam a few minutes ago, I got a new update/patch, Now I can start Skyrim (minus a couple of mods) and play. However... SKSE does not work anymore! Grrr. Not from NMM and not from the .exe file. When I launch Skyrim using these methods, I get the standard screen (the one you get if you launch from Steam). Well... at least I can play, but w/o any mods that use SKSE.
  4. Three things I've just figured out: 1. The Steam client just updated again (third time in the past few days); 2. SKSE no longer works (at least on my machine) - not from NMM, not from skse_loader.exe; 3. Deadly Dragons no longer works and causes an instant CTD (at least for me). Now I suspect that a lot of mods will be causing instant CTDs. The best way to check this is to use the 50% method. Deactivate all mods, start Skyrim, if it works, then activate 50% of your mods, play game, if it starts then load half of those remaining, repeat until the culprit is found.
  5. I agree with what ripple wrote (waaay too many mods). But wrt what Njorunn recommended, I would personally take a different approach. I wouldn't disable a few mods at a time, I would disable 50% of the mods (say all the mods beginning with N-Z). If Skyrim works with no problems, then I would enable 50% of the mods that were disabled (say N-S). And continue till you find the mod or mods that are causing the problems. Finally, everyone gets random CTDs after playing for a while (as soon as 4GB memory is accessed? - maybe that's just a myth, though). I can personally say it's much better with Skyrim than it was (for me) with Oblivion.
  6. Offline mode makes no difference. I'm positive (100%) that this is a issue related to the Steam update (there were two last week) and the Windows security update (last week that fiddled with .NET 3.5). I just don't know how to resolve it. Tomorrow I'll install Skyrim on another computer (Vista) and see what happens...
  7. What's up guys? No one checks other comments before creating a new thread? http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/917332-skyrimsteam-issue-immediate-crash/ I've had this problem for over two days now. I'm 100% sure that it's: A Steam problem, Related to the recent update of both Steam and Windows, Most likely a problem with .NET, DirectX or VCredist, Nothing to do with mod order or NMM. I'm waiting for a reply from Vault/Steam but I expect that it'll require a complete Windows recovery before this problem is resolved. I
  8. If I remember correctly, the only thing you need to do to change the blocky shadows is change the Shadow Detail to Medium (from Ultra or whatever you have), save, exit, edit your .ini file so that: iShadowMapResolution=4096 iShadowMapResolutionSecondary=4096iShadowMapResolutionPrimary=4096 Save the .ini file and make it read only. Play game, enjoy! I think it does affect distant shadows (can't access Skyrim right now to confirm) but everything is always a trade off...
  9. Yeah, I did pretty much all of the standard things to solve problems (and a lot of the extreme ones - including running a downloaded program to erase all .NET references from the Win registry). I actually got Civ5 to work again on Steam - still no luck with Skyrim. It crashes (rather immediately disappears) regardless of whether I launch it from Steam, NMM or the actual .exe file - or whether I run Steam from Steam.exe, SteamNew.exe or the shortcut (all have admin rights). It'll probably require a complete Windows 7 restore - so naturally I'll wait until my Skyrim junkie mind needs a fix or until Valve/Steam responds with a new patch. Guess which one I'm betting on...
  10. Well, it's definitely a Steam problem. I uninstalled Steam and when I tried to re-install it, I got this error message "Steam.exe (main exception): ERROR: copying SteamNew.exe to Steam.exe failed, Win32 Error 32 "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." Natually, I checked and no other instance of Steam was active (having just recently uninstalled and wiped it, actually).
  11. Afaik, there were two Steam updates during the week as well as a bunch of Windows updates (including one for .NET 3.5, which just might be the cause of the problem). It's definitely not a load order problem. One weird thing is that, if I launch Skyrim from Steam, is "detects my video card" every single time I restart Steam. Oh well, I'll take the drastic step of removing all traces of Skyrim and Steam from my computer, re-install and see if that makes a difference...
  12. I start Steam. Start NMM. The Skyrim screen comes on for about a second and then disappears - I've otherwise been playing Skyrim since Nov 11, 2011 w/o any problem. (The same thing happens when I try to lauch Civ5 from Steam as well). I've verified the integrity of the cache and get the "1 files failed to validate and will be reacquired" - which never actually happens. I've uninstalled and re-installed both Steam and .NET on the computer. I'm pretty sure this is a Steam problem (it happened suddenly after the last automatic update of Windows that installed a security update of .NET 3.5), but I thought that maybe someone here has encountered this before and solved the problem. All help appreciated. Thanks!
  13. Recently I noticed that everyone (bandits, draugr, giants, goats) are immune to my Unrelenting Shout. A message pops up saying that "[whoever] is unaffected by Unrelenting Force". I'm level 61 and have used it without any problems for a long time. I just recently noticed this. The only thing that I've recently done is add the Skyrim Monsters Mod. Anyone know if this might be the cause (I'm just looking for some quick help before I try and figure it out on my own)? Is this a known bug? Or is it just me...? Thanks for any and all info!
  14. You do have a point, the problem is, while beth cant do a game that would please everyone, they do try to cater to a wide audience as much as possible and that is also the problem why their games are being more and more simple with each release and why people ask them selfs, whats wrong. Everytime someone asks why is the game getting so dumbed down, someone answers with "they cant please everyone", yet they are forgetting that its actually this fact that they try to cater to a wider audience thats dumbing the game down. Also i find it a bit too much to acuse people from having pirate versions of the game just because they have problems, a large part of these problems is caused by the fact that many of them are new to the series and lack the knowledge how to properly install and troubleshoot the mods. Also skyrim workshop isnt helping this either, people just download and install mods without knowing they could conflict with eachother and then they come running to nexus, with threads "my game isnt working HALP". Ugh! This was a thread about why Skryim is becoming boring. Now it's a thread about people who pirate the software and then have the gall to complain about bugs... Silly. Let's get back to the point in question. IMO Oblivion had better story lines. This is typical. Think about a tv show that you like. The first season is always best because the writing is fresh. After a while, it jumps the shark - to use a hackneyed phrase. Skyrim is season three. Oblivion was season one and two. Morrowind was the throw-away pilot episode that was critically ripped to shreads but now everyone looks back at nostalgically (crossref: Star Trek, pilot, Cmdr Pike). I'm closing in on 450 hours and haven't completely any quest line except for the ultra lame MG. The only noteworthy character is Lydia - and that's only because my kid's walk around moaning: "I'm sworn to carry your burdens". I do miss those Oblivion Gates, goblins and the Adoring Fan. Well, maybe not the AF.
  15. Some mods mess up quests - especially Radiant Quests. Are you using mods? How many? I've had problems with Lydia in the past. Once she never showed up. Once she just stopped following me and was removed from the game. SPOIL ALERT: I suggest checking out the progression of the first four TG quests. Start with TG03 and work backwards. See if you really have completed all of the quests. You might have to do this intuitively. Did you talk to Sabjörn, Mallus and/or Maven? All of them? Some of them? They are critical people for the middle stages of TG03. I'd start there.
  16. I don't think you're supposed to write spoilers in this section (even silly ones like saying who's in the Thieves Guild). Anyway, here are two suggestions that you can try if you're playing on a PC (make a backup savegame before you start doing any of the following). Open up the console (via ~ on most keyboards (§½ on mine). It's the key above the tab key). 1. Check out the stage of the quests that you believe you have completed (i.e. TG00, TG01, TG02, TG03). For example, getstage TG03. Then compare the stage with the list of quest stages available at Skyrim Wiki. Maybe you're not done. Maybe you missed a critical event. 2, Use the player.moveto command to teleport to Brynjolf (refID. 20545). If you can teleport to Brynjolf but he doesn't react with the proper dialog - then you've probably messed up a quest stage sequence somewhere along the line. There are solutions and work arounds if this is the case, but I won't list them out just yet.
  17. Actually, in the case of Script Dragon, it doesn't matter if the "ASI" folder is in ...\skyrim\asi or ...\skyrim\data\asi. Unless something has recently changed, the scriptdragon.dll looks for .asi files in both of those directories - as well as the base ...\skyrim directory. Depending on the specific mod, the .asi files can wind up in any of those three places and still get loaded. How conflicts are resolved is another question altogether.
  18. I think a lot of the problems have to do with SLI / CrossFire My machine is fairly rockin: i7 950 @ 4200 MHz + water cooling HD 5970 @ 850 / 1150 MHz Asus P6T deluxe v2 mobo 12GB Corsair Dominator @ 1600 MHz in triple channel mode 80 GB Corsair SSD + 3 others Win 7-64 ultimate And yet, Skyrim runs like doggie do-do on my rig (with only 2XAA no less!!!). The game defaults to Ultra and I've changed the uLoadGrid to 7 (as well as the associated changes). But other than that, I don't use any HD mods or anything. The FPS drop down to zero in not less than a few outdoor areas of Skyrim. Usually the hit goes away but not always. And it's not always possible to know why the game suddenly conked out - e.g. looking close up at a mineral vein. Is it the ATI graphics driver? Who knows? Who cares? The bottom line is that Skyrim is occasionally unplayable on my fairly rockin' machine...
  19. Here's a little secret concerning the first dragon at Whiterun: Hide inside the tower (in the game) and go make some coffee (in the real world). The Dragonborn doesn't actually have to fight the dragon. The guards will do it for you and at least two of them can't be killed. When the dragon is dead, then walk up to it and absorb its soul. But that's beside the point. I agree that the best part of any game is the beginning when one is quite weak and a rat and/or mudcrab could effectively end the game in one bite! That's when it's exciting. Later on, it's a cakewalk. IMO, the game gets too easy too soon - even playing on Master, which I do exclusively. That's why the only mods I use (that affect gameplay) are the ones that slow down leveling (and remove alchemy, enchanting and smithing from the experience pool).
  20. OP: Well I'm happy for you and your trouble-free experience. One way of expressing your joy without causing any controversy would be to refrain from making any comments about people who are having problems (you've probably heard of the expression: Blame the Victim). There are lots of reasons people complain about TES games and/or Steam and many of them are out of the control of the user (hey, how about Skryim not being playable at launch - 11/11/11 - if the PC sound quality was higher than 16-bit, 44100 Hz? Who knew?). You don't mention your rig specs or your Skryim settings, so I'll assume that you have an average computer (or a console) with settings on or below High, no mods added and have never even looked at the .ini files. That helps a lot to minimize problems. Also, if you have no expectations (e.g. you never played Oblivion) then you won't be disappointed. I complain because I care...
  21. I have the same problem and posted a question yesterday (http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/644804-skyrim-suddenly-wont-start/page__p__5082060__fromsearch__1#entry5082060). My suspicion is that it has something to do with mod subscriptions/steam (I've sent a question to BethSupport and they're working on it). Here are some things to think about: Did you uninstall/re-install Steam and/ or Skyrim? Were you subscribed to any mods via Steam? Did you ever get any errors pertaining to enumeration of subscriptions? Do you use NMM and/or SKSE? If so, can you start the game with the skse_launcher? [i can] Good luck and let me know if you manage to solve the problem.
  22. First of all, let me say that my soundcard is indeed set to 44100Mhz... Ok, here's the deal: I've played Skyrim since 11/11/11 and, if I remember correctly I'm at about 410 hours. I play around endlessly with the .ini files causing lots of problems so I "delete local content" and uninstall Steam quite often. I use NMM and the SKSE launcher. Last week I got a strange pop-up message about subscribing to mods when I started the game (fwiw, I haven't even looked at the mods available on Steam). That happened only once. But everytime after that I got an error message about failing to enumerate subscribed files. No problem since I could just click ok and the game would start. But I got tired of doing that so I did my usual uninstallation and re-installation. Oops... Now Skryim doesn't start via the SkyrimLauncher GUI (it still loads if I use the skse_launcher). I get the UAC question and then the gui just re-launches. I'm assuming that this is a problem with Steam, no? Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Solutions? I turned off all synchs and auto-updates. All help is appreciated.
