Increasing playtime before CTD?
GladMax replied to GunnerofLife's topic in Oblivion's Mod troubleshooting
do you use any mods like unique landscapes? if so, can i see your load order please? what does the ctd error message say? when exactly does it occur? do you have special settings in your oblivion.ini? if so, may i see them? -
no, but a very similar guide pinned in the forum, which covers about the same attempts

hi guys, my friend is trying to play fallout 3 on a low end machine (but its playable). the thing is that after walking around a bit she gets a ctd. what we tried so far was: - edit the FalloutPrefs.ini (also for performance) which is quite fair, but still ctd - edit the load order with BOSS, no real result - we monitored ram usage, it was not the problem - latest patch was installed as well (with all dlc) - tried to deactivate all codecs - tried 2 anti ctd mods from nexus, didnt help either - tried bUseThreadedAI=1; iNumHWThreads=2 no result im out of ideas ... what else could cause this? am i missing something?

yeah. indeed, the percentage was "only" at 50%, and the messageBox said this action would only have an effect if it reaches 100%. it still fixed it, though :)
-
final solution: i just found out that wrye bash is also able to "fix" the abomb. tried it on my savegame - and guess what, it works like a charm. where OAF failed ...
-
now with the permanent appcrash ... i post this only because it might help others: i continued using an older savegame (10 minutes of gameplay before the last save) and now everything seems to work fine (EXCEPT for the stuck animations). conclusion: sometimes its simply the savegame that seems to be corrupted ... (will post if i find further results.)

ok i have tried many times but it didnt work out. now i the game didnt only freeze i had permanently appcrash. i think its a problem with enhanced music control (i had this problem before, but it was solved by disabled very codec that is possible to be disabled). now that i disabeld ehanced music control.esm (blade of the haunted.esp was a child and yes i had the compatibility version) the game is working again, plus the correct animations, i dont konw if OAF helped on this or not. just too bad about not being able to use esm yet again ...... thx for the help though u guys.

i used proper savegames only (.ess). but i will try now any type of savegame, maybe it helps. i will report back
-
i have tried both versions, but i always have the same problem when loading the "fixed" savegame, that the game freezes after 1 - 2 sec. (but i was able to see the fire that was not properly animated before, was properly animated again, before the complete game was frozen). am i missing something? is this a bug? like i said with both versions the same result :/

hello, i have been using the mod "improved fires and flames" for a long time. but only recently i noticed (but im sure it didnt appear this way before) some fires like the fires in bows etc. are not really burning properly, they are just like an image, or some change once every sec, or every slowly, so its not a really smooth burning. then again its weird because sometimes when i walk closer to the fire or turn around it, it starts / stops the burning animation again. i have checked, and my version of improved fires and flames is still up to date. please, has anyone ideas about this? if u need more info let me know. edit: i forgot, i just recently started using this fake-windowscreen-thing so it was more easy to tab in and out of the game. might this be a reason?

some mods have seen updates, some didnt. i suggest u try and find out on your own, as we dont know what other mods you have :)
-
are you sure that you removed the mods you thought that they were responsible for the issue, correctly? if you only deactived the .esp 's from the load order, read this: only deactivating the .esp from the load order will not fully remove the mod. to fully remove the mod, you need to actually remove all the files that came with it. to do so, its best if you see your mod download, and what it contains, search for it in your oblivion files and delete them. note: maybe there were some things replaced, like textures. if u are unsure, dont delete the files, but copy them to a safe place out of the oblivion folder, so in case things go wrong you can put them back! (i personally always back files up that are going to be overwritten in a mod installation process, so nothing can get messed up.) if not, continue here: your mods seem to be okay otherwise. except for one thing about the load order: why is oblivion.esm not at the very top? if im not wrong it should be first. anyway, try running BOSS (better oblivion sorting software) you can find it easy here on nexus. another thing you can try (most likely wont help but try anyway) load another savegames and see if you still run into the same problem. oh and try disabling this: EVE_ShiveringIslesEasterEggs.esp idk what it does but try anyway. another thing that comes to my mind is: load an older savegame and try starting the quest u wanted to play again, and see if the same problem occurs again. post your results good luck!

how about nehrim?
-
does this only happen with the npcs you need for your quest, or with any npc? if so, did you try in tamriel, is there the same behaviour? did you install mods for the shivering isles? if so, which where it? if none of this applies, maybe posting your load order would help us to get a quick overview. if you dont know how to do this, post here and i will help you further.

idk .. id just play without bloom then. i personally dont use it and i dont miss it either. (if nothing else helps)

everything that was said before, is fine, now adding my opinions: since u are "new" to the vanilla oblivion, u should start playing it without any mods, because u dont know everything that is in the game anyway, so why already add new content? believe me - if u are new to oblivion u can enjoy it for a long time without a single extra mod. but, however, if your machine is not wooden / ancient / whatever, you will certainly want to enhance the graphics of the game. there are plenty of mods here on nexus to do so. i will list the ones that come to mind at the moment: (they might have been mentioned above i didnt read everything lol) - Qarls texture packs http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=18498 - unique landscapes http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=19370 - better cities http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=16513 - animated window lightning system http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=19628 and for combat immersion: - deadly reflex http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=8273 better looking ladies: - hgec eye candy http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=15802 (you will see the number of downloads how popular these mods are) other than that, you will really find almost everything you desire to find, just search for it. i even saw a mod once for immersion which let the horses actually crap horse dung - no joke! and if u cant find something u are looking for, try the forums. ppl will likely be able to show u what u might like. but let me tell you one thing: always read readme files of the mods. always check if you have the requierments to play it. check for incompatibility with mods you might already have. and the most important: always install only one mod at a time, and then test the game. because if something goes wrong, and u installed several mods, troubleshooting will become pain in the ass!! dont do it. i hope this helps! happy playing!

u said framerate is fine indoors / in caverns, but poor outside. maybe you forgot some tweaks on your .ini file. search for the following values: uGridsToLoad set the value behind it to 3 it controls how many grids in the world get loaded at full detail (something like that :D ) bDrawShaderGrass set the value to 0 it controls if grass is enabled or not uGridDistantCount set the value to 10 also some distance detail stuff that gets loaded changing these settings will (hopefully) positively affect your RAM and gpu. try with the changed settings, if it doesnt help, maybe here u can find even more settings i didnt see: http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_8.html good luck and post your results!

can you try to disable all aa effects in the catalyst control center and in the game options and disable hdr / bloom too and then test? if then it is ok, go and try step by step to add your desired settings one by one, so u add 1 setting, start the game, if its ok add next setting, and so on, and then maybe u can find out step by step why u get the flickering? post again when u did some testing, good luck
-
are you refering to this? http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=33863 try other servers for the first file, u can chose between Washington DC, USA (485 users) Dallas, USA (483 users) Seattle, USA (481 users) Maidenhead, UK ( users) until one works for you. if this doesnt help, post here again.
-
do u have any mods that have bloom / hdr effects? what gfx card do u have? does it have the latest drivers? i have an nvidia card and it has the option that i can add effects to selected games, maybe u did something like that too and forgot about it? and did you change / add values in your .ini files? post your results i hope i can help u further

hey i dunno if u still have the issue, but i had similar problems, it was because of too much memory loaded at the same time (RAM). there are more than 1 tools to make oblivion run smoothly using more ram, but an easy way would be to try and edit your .ini file found in: C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\My Games\Oblivion there u find a file called Oblivion.ini and if u open it with the text editor, u can change things like: uGridDistantTreeRange=60 uGridDistantCount=60 uGridsToLoad=7 when u lower the numbers behind the "=" the less will be loaded - the less RAM is used and maybe that can help you to fix the crash problem. if it doesnt help, im sorry :)
