That I don't know, but I would assume/hope it takes the lowest value item first that has most/all of the available constituent parts.

You don't have to scrap items like that, just store them in a workshop, items are automatically broken down for component parts as they are required when building something. Any components not used from said broken down item are also stored for later use and not lost as was initially thought. It just takes a short while for the components to show in the inventory.

I'm almost up to 5 days play time and I'm loving it, it's my first Fallout game too. Sure there are some minor issues with performance here and there, especially inside the institute, but for the most part it's a very well put together game in my opinion. Definitely loving all the mods on PC too. It never was an option getting it on console for me, can't stand less than 60 fps.
