Being a player who lives in the USA, where your every move is being battered by schemes to nickel and dime you until you go dry, I am aware of the fact that Valve and Bethesda are an industry leader and all about making money. Most of what we do nowadays we will have to pay for, if not now, later. There are some points to consider in all of this muddy water, however. 1.) The fact that Steam workshop is so narrow in the type of product it allows in it's modding, mostly "family" type content is something that I see as some censorship of developers on their site. They have a right, they pay for the whole thing. 2.) The percentages that were being bandied about were so one sided toward the house ( Valve-Bethesda) w/ the developer/modder only taking a 25% share ( of course you can imagine all the add-in deductions that would occur) 3.) The future quality ratings of mods being turned over to an acceptance review panel to control based on trend popularity rather than actual individual content, ( 15 types of Avenger Dragonborn mods with an endless range of rainbow colored sheilds and armor, as well as SpiderMan web color changes placed on spell buttons, oh boy !) 4.) The inability of younger player/modders who have limited budgets to be exposed to groundbreaking and thought provoking material simply because they are being pounded with constant "buy-now" banners instead of free content. By the way wasn't free content the way a lot of us started in the building field to begin with? And isn't it a shame some super imaginations who could well be the next world shaking RPG originators end up playing mindless shooter games, thinking this is the boundry line of development because it's the most popular. 5.) To say that modders are not entitled to monies for their work is not quite the way to look at it either, as many give up on development to "get a job and support their hobby". There must be a better way than put the future of gaming into the hands of the "McDonalds" of gameplay stores. Nexus also needs a cash flow to remain in existence. The fact that we all can come here and download instantly any content we wish should not put that fact in a dark corner. Personally I cannot fathom why anyone would put out a game that could not be modded, as the base game must be owned to mod it . I think also modding games leads to new spinoffs from that base for new worlds as has been done by Bethesda. I have seen this market go from text only games a few people huddled in computer stores played due to lack of public equipment availability, to absolute garbage phone apps that charge folks $9.99 to cause wrecks while driving. I will say to the outstanding mod creators who place their work on Nexus and other sites that I sincerely appreciate your long nights and weekends letting light reach the dark corners of your imagination and tirelessly achieving the great things we players spend our long nights and weekends so eagerly discovering. Sorry for the lengthy post, but ........
