This problem is still present in the Skyrim: Special Edition. Had to go to a previous save as I had a lot of gold on me over time and got carried away buying lots of goodies from a merchant. However once they cross that threshold of 30,000 I lose the ability to get it back by selling anything to them. Frustrating...
