I know this is a really old post, but I wanted to throw my experience in. When using edited textures to change the appearance of anything, the only option you need to enable is the texture override. The texture dumping option is designed for the people who want to edit the textures themselves, all it does is save any texture (that the game loads) into the tex_dump folder, so that you can open it with image editing software. That being said, I had the same issue with the game crashing immediately upon startup while the the texture dumping feature was enabled, the thing was, I had to delete all of the DSfix files from my DATA folder and reinstall them in order to get the game to stop crashing, even after I had disabled the texture dumping feature in the dsfix config file.
