I'm guess that by "automatic downloads" they mean not being pushed to buy a premium membership and not having to click three extra buttons just to download. Oh joy bunnies. Just love it when a company takes something that everyone got and sticks it behind their paywall. Guess this is the kind of thing that happens when you're the biggest kid in the school yard, you get to frick over the users that aren't paying for the service and then lord it over them because you provide something to them "out of the goodness of your heart." Happy Fricking Christmas. Edit: I'm going to throw these last three things out there as well. 1. I can live with a 5-10 second delay on the download. Won't like it, but I can live with it provided there is a visible timer counting down. 2. The new "Push for Premium!" that is going on with the downloads is LESS likely to get me to go premium and more likely to make me think twice about downloading, voting or endorsing mods. I realize that is actually good for Nexus as it reduces their load, but it also reduces traffic and income when that is hundreds or thousands of people who are no longer seeing the ads they post on every page. 3. And I'll step up and admit that maybe I'm wrong about the hows and whys; but whether I am or not it sure as heck looks like the admin (site admin, not the moderators) lording the premium memberships and pushing them hard on the regular user base. And anyone in politics, business or marketing will tell you that it's all about perception.

The modders getting "profits" from their work on the Steam Workshop were never going to be able to make a real living off of this. From everything I heard on various sites about the pay system it worked as follows: Modder sets price for mod. Valve gets 30% of money from each sale. (Minus 1%-5% that go to "Service Providers." ) ZeniMaxMedia/BethSoft gets remaining 70% and cuts modder 25% of that. Modder sees money only after their cut reaches $100. A part time job at the local burger joint is going to pay more in a week than any modder was going to see from any of those mods in two months. This was NOT a way to help modders make a profit, this was a way to help Valve and BethSoft make a profit. And THAT is the problem. -

Lilly, As a professional programmer I am insulted by the low opinion that BethSoft and Valve seem to have of the various modding communities. (Let's not kid ourselves, Nexus isn't the only modding site.) Yes, BethSoft has provided many assets within Skyrim, but for many modders who go out of their way and put in the amount of time and effort required to create totally new assets...I am sorry but 25% is insulting. One of the things that, as Dark0ne alludes to in his previous post, is a potential problem is the use of these modder created assets. Chinese users (and others, not picking on anyone specific here) have for many years outright stolen mods and started selling them on their own websites with no attempt made to attribute the mods to their authors. This happened earlier this year with SkyUI. What is to stop someone from taking a bunch of mods here on the Nexus and uploading them to Steam and selling them there? Yes, Steam might pull the plug on the mods and ban that user if the author(s) complain to them about the theft, but they won't be giving the actual author the money, or refunding it to the people who paid for the mods. Regarding Chesko, yes he is very polite and very talented and I have and continue to wish him nothing but success. His comment on Steam about how now that the mod there require payment before the download does not entitle people to make demands is rather silly, save for regarding updates or new features, in my opinion. He, and the other authors, have now put, as Dark0ne described it, a "pay wall" between their mods and the community. That makes them a business as far as I am concerned. They need to prove, both with quality of content and quality of support, that they deserve to be paid. And if their customers find that quality lacking, it does entitle the customer to demand either restitution for what they see as poor service or an improvement of the service. Having been a modder for Oblivion and Morrowind, I had several mods that were never fleshed out or finished for various reasons. How will Valve react to mods like this? What kind of system, if any, will they put in place to keep people from uploading "Imperial Guard Armor Playable" style mods? (For those that don't know what that means, it is about the simplest possible mod you can make for Oblivion and there was a point where at least one of those was popping up in the Oblivion Latest Files page per day.) Furthermore, what are BethSoft and Valve going to do when people start buying the pay mods and then posting them on other sites for free? And to direct this back to the Nexus and to Dark0ne, what are YOU going to do when people start trying it here? Because it will happen eventually. -
Much, much better than before. In some ways I'd still prefer to see specific logos for each site, but in many ways the use of a background behind the logo is really a better choice. And again, the lack of proper sizing? Hopefully that will be something that the coding update will fix. And I assume that someone has pointed out that the link to New Vegas Nexus update isn't working.

Sorry Dark0ne, but I'm with Lisnpuppy on this. I looked at what was left of Coolystguy's images and, honestly, if it was someone targeting things that are risque, well, they picked some odd ones to leave alone. Regarding back ups Lisnpuppy, you, and everone else who uploads anything to the nexi, should always, always, always keep a back up on your computer and another off computer back up. I lost my hard drive last year, and my cousin lost his modding computer and his back up was on my computer so we both lost all our modding work because we didn't have off computer back ups. Personally, unless a mod is total crud, I keep everything I download and bookmark the page as well. (And then I back up my Favorites to be doubly sure.) And Dark0ne, I know you're off having a grand old time wherever, (at least I hope you're having a grand old time) but the lack of comment on any of the changes to the new site design that people have put forth is something that I find rather more disappointing than what seems to be an attitude of "Oh yeah, that's tough, nothing I can do" regarding Coolystguy's images. But maybe Lisnpuppy and I are just seeing something in your posts that isn't there. Whichever it is, have fun on your break.

Looking over different areas of the new site again, and that white on orange is really bugging me the more I see it. I really don't know about you folks who keep going on about how that orange isn't so bad, but it is really starting to give me eye strain. Looking at the images on one of my files, I can tell that the coding has been updated; it no longer takes five minutes to have the image open when clicked, but I still perfered having them open in new windows or as new tabs. Also, something that I don't think anyone else has said, but I hope there is going to be a way to minimize all the links and stuff at the bottom of the page, because when I'm reading through the file descriptions it gets really distracting due to the orange text starting so close to the end of the description. Only good fixes I can think of for that are the ability to, as I said, minimize that, or moving it back to the side of the screen to take up some of that wasted, empty space. I'm not having any issues with the drop downs and ads, (*GRRR* drop downs [angry]) but I would see about switching the "Wiki" and "Competitions" buttons so that all three drop downs are next to each other. Also, adding some code so that the menu goes away if the tab is changed (if possible). Subtle point, but I'd change to color of the news item ending bar (that bit at the end of each news story), because it looks exactly the same as the top bar of the story below it can be slightly confusing. And, again, try to include more continuity with the current site. Colors and logo would be a start. Personally, I'd prefer to see this new design quickly murdered and dumped into the trash bin where I think it belongs, but I'm sure that the next "Great Leap Forward" will not be halted, so I fingure that those of us who aren't exactly thrilled should at least try and put forth ideas for the improvment of the design.

As I've said, there are going to be both good and bad points to the new Nexus. I'm sure that the coding updates will help to improve functionality on the site; and hopefully Dark0ne will take some of the astetic complaints to heart. I'd rather like to hear from Dark0ne on the astetical issues that many of us have with the new version of the Nexus and if there is a specific reason behind the decisions that were made.

@Tehdman; While I agree that there are parts of the new layout that work; the site, and I know I've said this before, looks like it was designed by a first time designer. And since Dark0ne owns the site he can change it up just as he pleases. The best we can hope for is that he takes the comments made herein to heart and works to fix what many of us see as problems with the new design. Incd. I can't seem to get file comments to load on the new design. Might be intentional with the limits of the current page, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

@Dark0ne; Where did the icons for each Nexus site on the upper right go? Those are far more useful (provided one knows what the icon means) than a drop down list; so I can see the point on that change. Still, I'd rather have the icons. And yes, I realize that part of the updated design is about reducing clutter and eliminating redundancy, but the page just seems...empty. Once again I'm going to bang on about left justification, this time for the icons on file pages. Which also seem to over lap the big orage bar. @Natterforme; Here is the catch Natter, there are a lot of things that many of us "old-hands" don't like about the new design, simply because the design is new. At this point it is clear that Dark0ne is going to make the change he wants to make which isn't unexpected because he owns and runs the site. (Which is totally fine, btw.) But many of the complaints are about the way the new site is laid out and location of features that many of us have gotten used to having in specific locations. My main proble with the example page is that there are not example pages for say, Fallout 3 or New Vegas nexus. Also, all the Nexus sites have had different logos from the word go, which helped to differentiate between sites. Same with colors, one could easily tell which site you were viewing simply by the color scheme (or by checking the title, or tab, or url, or on and on...). Personally, I'd really like to see what FO3 Nexus looks like with the new design simply because, with the exception of layout issues, I think that for Fallout the new design would have a more "Sci-fi"/"Futurist" feel and would work with those sites just fine. We don't need one logo to rule them all, having multiple sites all with the same logo and same colors isn't interesting, its dull. One of the big attractions to the Nexi is that they are all visually different and are very different from other modding sites.

*Sigh* Dark0ne, you gave me a lecture about aspect ratio when you made that change, but now you (or someone paid by you) re-designs the site with that much wasted space?! Yes, I fully understand that the currently layout isn't really condusive for viewing on a smart phone or tablet, but really, since none of the games work on smart phone or tablets, what would be the point of trying to download a mod to said phone or tablet? Where are the advanced search and tag search options? Yes, the new search bar looks nice, but a simplified category (Oblivion Files, Morrowind Files, Skyrim Files) search system would work just as well. Also the placement is just off. If the site were left justified then the search bar could be placed in the middle between the "Log Out" button and Social section. (And how many people have linked the nexus to Facebook, Twitter and Steam? Actuall question.) As has been said before, yes the current shade of orange is much to bright and the hot files images to large on the horizontal axis. And stripes in boxes, really? What is this, the Hippies Disco Resurrection Society homepage? If you insist on including a drop down menu for logged in members, then "Manage Your Files", "Download/Rating History", "Tracking Center" and "Comment Tracking" should be included on that rather than "Member Area", "Preferences" and "Premium Mebership". The latter group should all be reached through the user's Profile. Personally, I'm on here to look at mods or manage my posted mods, not constantly check my profile or preferences. And while I realize that all of the former are under the "Files" drop down menu, it isn't where they need to be, because many of the members are not posted modders, so they don't need those options. Regarding the logo, seeing that new logo makes me want to break down and cry. The old TES Nexus Logo would fit just fine on the new design and help to take up some of that empty space. A simple graphical update with a Skyrim image would help tie it in to the new game. The current design's tabs on the left of the home page, as well as the logo, help to tie the site directly into The Elder Scrolls. If I had just started playing with Skyrim and I arrived at the new version of TES Nexus, it would take a while to figure out that, yes, this is a site related to the game I'm playing. While the new design for PES looks wrong, it makes it very clear that the design is based on an Elder Scrolls game. By simply changing the pictures behind the lables, it would be easy to tie the site in to the new game while keeping a feeling of continuity with the old site. On the right hand side of the current site there are a considerible number of links and sections that seem to have been condensed into *shudder* drop down menus. While these ddms *seem* to have covered the bases well, it would still save time for the users to have a simplified version of the current link system on the right hand side of the site. Since news seems to take up much of the main page, a news section isn't really needed, but a link to your blog would be good to have. I went in and looked at the "Edit Attributes" for one of my files, and found that the section for editing the long description is still much to small. That is the most important section of the attributes but while it is finally a respectable width, the height is still lacking. It needs to be at least three times as tall as it currently is. In all honesty and truth, I don't like the new design. It looks cheap and cooky-cutter. And if you, or a friend of yours designed this for free, then I'm sorry if you're insulted. If you paid someone to do this, then I would ask for your money back. I've done web design in the past, and every single time I've used the current design of the Nexus as a base and an example of "how to do it right". From what I gather part of the peak time issues is the way the site is currently designed and laid out, but really, the design fuctions and makes the most important part of the site, the mods, easily accessible.
