  1. i know. i think maybe if they changed the name... the x kinda has a negative connotation to it in my opinion.. kiinda like "x" as in "x-rated" i dunno.. sounds silly i know, but it may be .. "x" and "children" shouldnt go together imo.. even if intentions are good. who knows though. i could be way off
  2. yeah im trying to revert back to a version thats supported by skse since they havent updated yet.. going crazy trying to get this to work... i have tesv.exe and skyrimlauncher.exe from 1.8.151 but i tried to just copy those over to replace the 1.9.29 versions and i get CTD upon load game.
  3. Also, can anyone tell me what type of map uses the " _msn " suffix in skyrim? I'd like to know what they are so i can research and try to learn about them as well. Thanks
  4. sorry dude, ive often wondered the same thing. I use really high res textures for my cbbe body and have tried different ones from various different authors. however, i still run into situations where i see some screenshots that i know look wayy better than mine.. im thinking maybe has to do with normal map or one of the others
  5. thats a good question.. ive never really thought about it before but now that you bring it up id like to know too
  6. Awesome advice, thank you very much. I will definitely give this a shot. Ive been reading some stuff talking about a specularity map being "in" a normal map... First of all, I dont know exactly what a specular map is and i certainly dont know how to integrate it into a normal map?
  7. ok i will look into that.. so make the normal the way i described? and then run it through texture optimizer of crazy bump? ok so heres an example. this is the normal map of the windows texture from the visible windows mod by isoku: http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/s368/michael_rw/normal2.jpg and this my attempt at recreating it (i gave up pretty quickly because i could already see it wasnt going to be the same; mine has way too much detail and not enough depth): http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/s368/michael_rw/normal1.jpg Thanks for the suggestion about crazy bump, i will definitely look into that. Anyone else have any other tips, recommendations, or suggestions?
  8. hey guys, so ive been having trouble learning how to make "good" normal maps using the normal map filter from nvidia toolkit in photoshop. This is the method most other modders use, correct? Ive watched/read a few tutorials and basically what im doing is running the filter once with the 'scale' value set anywhere from 2-10, and then select either "4 sample" or "9 x 9" in the height generation section of the filter dialog.. then i leave everything else where it is ("add height to normal map" selected, "animate light" selected in 3D View Options section of the dialog, "Average RGB" selected in Height Source, and "Height" selected in Alpha Field) Then after i apply the filter the first time, i duplicate the layer, apply some gaussian blur to it, choose "overlay" blending mode, and merge down. Then I repeat this a few times.. this is how im adding more depth/height to the map. .. and thats about it. basically what ive been doing for practice is taking the textures from various popular mods and trying to replicate the normal map using their regular (diffuse) maps... but it seems i just cant get them quite the same. Does anyone have any advice for me? It would be greatly appreciated
  9. wow i just found what youre talking about.. in all honesty this is something i was kinda hesitant about before i even made the post.. i dont want someone thinking im a pedophile or something lol.. if the kids werent so darned ugly and odd looking i would just let it slide. Anyways, it seems ironic that i found the mod on L. Lab, same place that hosts the sex mods lols. But there was a huge disclaimer on there about how this mod does not contain any nudity or any other foul content, and that the mod should not be used for such things. so i just grabbed it .. gonna go install it now. thanks for the suggestion buddy wonder why the nexus wont host it? maybe the pedophile thing... edit: its not actually hosted on L. Lab, but is linked to from their forums
  10. well im glad to see im not the only one out there.. yeah the kids are really terrible.. when i first got the game i remember i wasnt even sure if thats what they were supposed to be.. theyre like midgets.. er, "little people" i can open nif files in nifscope and 3dsmax and ive played with 3dsmax for maybe ten hours, tops.. thats about it for me when it comes to meshes. i was thinking about maybe taking one the better looking heads from some of the popular mods and maybe just scaling it down.. but after a little searching it doesnt seem like its as easy as scaling a 2d texture in photoshop
  11. hey there guys and gals.. plainly put, skyrim kids are terrible looking, especially the females. first off, i mean no offense to any mentally disabled individuals. However, they do look similar to some disabled adults ive seen before with the same body size as a kid, a large head, and oddly shaped.. i guess the boys dont look too bad, but the girls need some serious work.. they just look creepy in my opinion http://images.uesp.net/0/07/SR-npc-Mila_Valentia.jpg I know how to retexture pretty much anything except for skin/face/body and i dont know my way around 3dsmax or blender enough yet to try and remodel. I may be able to add in a few details (like brush up the brow) on the texture character/malechild/humanhead.dds but thats about it. So, are there any experienced modelers and/or texture artists who would be willing to do this for me? I would even package up the files for release and anything else i could do to help. Please let me know. Thanks http://images.uesp.net/thumb/1/17/SR-npc-Lars_Battle-Born.jpg/600px-SR-npc-Lars_Battle-Born.jpg
  12. 1. Wryebash...tricky to use?...do U use it? it can be intimidating when you first star using wrye bash but IMO its the best program to use. it offers better functionality, especially with respect to installing non-esp mods like textures and meshes using the "installers" tab. Learn how to use the installers tab, learn what the colors of the boxes mean (white/grey/red/yellow/green/orange), learn how priority is given to archives (.7z/.zip/.rar) that are lower in the installer list. When you install textures using installers tab it will overwrite anything of the same files that are in an archive above it.. if you uninstall it then it will remove all the files for you.. there is no need to ever manually copy and paste or extract files into your data folder.. using wrye bash allows you to do everything using the installers tab and allows you to keep better track of what files are active and which ones have been overwritten by other mods. It tells you exactly which files belong to which mod and which of them are active and which are not. click the help button at the bottom of the wrye bash window to bring up the readme.. you should read that alot until you learn how to use it really well and it will make modding a much easier, more organized process. NMM may be the "easy" way out, but it doesnt give you nearly the amount of flexibility or control over your mods. NMM does things how it thinks you want it to be done, but often this can be troublesome. its better to fully understand the process of using and installing mods that way you can better troubleshoot and manage your experience. Plus, wrye bash allows you to integrate BOSS, NifScope, CK, and other tools. 2. My BOSS sort lists dirty edits, particularly on my update.esm. Is this a REAL issue? Should I clean? yes, always clean your mods. its very easy to do so theres no reason you shouldnt 3. Which leads me to this.. TES5...solves issues?...I need to know it? I read somwhere one must be careful not to wipe out needed stuff. TES5Edit is the program you need. There is an easy to follow guide on how to use it to clean your mods. While you can screw up mods easily if you dont follow the instructions, it shouldnt be a problem if you dont do stupid things. It is a very powerful tool but a very important and useful one. There is enough info out there to teach you how to use it properly. When in doubt, use google to look something up instead of risking ruining one of your mods. 4. BOSS ordering...for me it is the da bomb as a newb...do U change the BOSS ordering? When? BOSS does a pretty decent job of ordering mods. I run BOSS then usually make a few slight changes. This for two reasons: 1. if a particular mod is not in the BOSS database, it will automatically place it at the bottom of the load order underneath the bashed patch, which may not be the best place for it. For example, if it is a player house mod that it doesnt recognize, you should look for one of your other player house mods that it did recognize and properly position, then move it there. 2. Sometimes after BOSS sorting, one of my mods wont work properly. Thus i will manually move the mod lower in the load order (thus giving it higher priority) and then it works. This happens to me with Dudestia Multiple Marriages Mod.. If I use the BOSS position it wont work but if I move it lower it works GOOD LUCK EDIT: yes it will be worth going back to pay oblivion. i still play it to this day. you should also use Wrye Bash and BOSS with oblivion as well. Actually, if you can learn to use Wrye with oblivion then using it with skyrim will be a piece of cake. Oblivion makes big use of the bashed patch, something that skyrim doesnt really use too much. bashed patch is basically a mod (an esp file) that wryebash creates and uses to integrate, import, and merge various mods or parts of mods that are active in your load order. With respect to modding oblivion, its basically the same as modding skyrim, except you use Construction Set for oblivion instead of the Creation Kit used for skyrim mods. The layout of the two software apps is very similar. Have fun
  13. just make a copy of the 2h animations you want to use. rename the copies to the appropriate 1h filename(s) and put in meshes/actors/character/animations
  14. this^ i use skyUI and ipHUD. ipHUD changes the size and location of the health/magic/stamina meters like they were in oblivion (stacked) and also makes it so they stay visible at all times instead of disappearing when theyre full. As far as colors, like DarkUI or Darnified UI for oblivion, i havent seen anything like that for skyrim.
  15. my first step would be probably look at each of the esp in tes5edit and see if theres anything that jumps out at you there. If that doesnt produce anything, I would probably change the load order around with those mods (thus changing priority) and see if i can get different results..using the results to deduce which mod may be causing those effects. I know, not the most efficient method, but its all i know unfortunately. Thanks for the heads up on using skyedit for group edits
  16. i totally understand what youre saying buddy. it makes perfect senese. You want to make it where both of the effects will scale to your experience, and currently only the first effect of the enchantment is scaling. I am not sure if there is a way to fix this. In fact, I believe some of the stock enchantments with multiple effects are also unable to scale all of the effects.. its usually just the first one iirc. hmmm... theres gotta be a way to fix it though, you would think...
  17. depends on how powerful your machine is  also consider if youre making a mod that requires a really powerful machine to run smooth, you may limit your fan base
  18. I wish I could help you out with your second question but I do not believe it is possible. I have been looking for a way to change the 3D position of multiple items (like making sure all of the pieces of the floor are alligned), but unfortunately I have not found a way to do that either. Anytime you select multiple objects and then choose 'edit', CK will de-select all but one object. I believe this behavior is the same throughout the CK, but I could be wrong.. im still relatively new to modding. Maybe someone else will chime in
