  1. I still use MO and am glad it is still being looked after by new developers. I've tried vortex several times and it is done in a way to be smart for simple mod organising and for as many games as possible but for a robust advanced mod organiser it's anything but, things like to the simple ability to save backup restore your current setup, ability to keep the game folders clean is not possible. I'm in my own world here. My own opinion. For me, I could not get over the practicaity of MO and expected the same functionality. The way it added files to the game folders magically.. I love MO and continue to use it, it's a fantastic designed program. Lots of people stick up for vortex and that's fine. Bad sadly. I think it's rubbish, hate all you want., I feel for the creator.. who is actually the creator of MO and have the most respect for but sadly vortex when trying to be used simply caused my own game folders and installs to become ruined and I've tried many times wanting to give it a full-on good go!. Anyways I'd always crack the shits as in my own usage case causes problems.. large problems.. (I use split drives and other pretty advanced things in my systems) most importantly I love mirroring the game folders from desktop to laptop and MO works flawlessly . Albeit needing external software for mirroring.. sometimes modding the games MO is lots more friendlier to work with. I love symlinks as much as the next bloke but they can be a little frustrating to work with.. especially when wanting to backup game folders! Anyways basically a year and a half between testing vortex I still don't like it. Regards.
  2. I don't know why you think I was symlink my vortex setup? Game was on D, vortex on D, mods on D It was only hardlinked. My confusion here on my last message using symlinks a lot. It's very similar anyways.. sym and hard Sidenote I've symlinked Beth games fine. Fo76 is symlinked and works fine as well. Does vortex use hardlink or symlink I think it is hardlink truth be told.
  3. Yes it's been months since I wrote this post. I'm back hehehe Okay I wanted to update since this is still a concern for me to use vortex keeping in mind I cannot run a default setup based on my system setup. I have drive D for games... My Fileserver computer keeps games on D My main gamerig is also on D And is my laptop.. I use primocache to use 20% of my main SSD to cache drive D on all 3 systems.. so mechanical drives perform faster so to speak. (If I load games they store into SSD for next play..) SSD is 500GB in each and have 100GB of cache assigned to mechanical drive(s) I know about symlinks (vortex) etc. I use them in daily life. One example is. They are really good in tricking systems Such as stupid apple crap! Windows appdata folder. iPhone backups for what ever reason don't allow you select folder to store this. It can fill a computer with a 250-500GB SSD as a windows drive in no time. Symlinks allow you to basically fool windows or iTunes the folder still exsists but is actually where ever you want.. (Expensive SSDs and 100GBs of iPhone backups is stupid wasteful storage) So I symlink the apple folder to a Mechanical drive. For my clients. That's one use case. Another use case is Tablet PCs with 128 or 250gb SSDs These machines usually have a MicroSD slot to put another drive.. windows often won't allow to install programs to removable storage.. so using symlinks to create a shortcut of a folder on the microSD in Drive C of the SSD tricks windows hahaha Anyways. My main issue with vortex is the purge and deploy. In past experiences and thing which stress me the most to use it. For me the purge and deploy seemed to give me many problems (stop halfway and give vague errors and other randomness) that was one problem. It would require me to basically start over to solve that one. (Delete game, reinstall game) it appear that symlinks were not removable like requiring safe mode to delete the files. Not 100% sure what was happening Generally speaking. For trying to sync 2 PC's. I would try the method tanin suggested and half the time purge or deploy won't work properly and give unknown errors. I use a custom setup! As explained above.. ekkk. But even on single machine. Using vortex I did experience many times that simply purging and deploying was problematic. Sometimes stopping half way and didn't ever know why. Sometimes purging and deploying would kill order of files or mods. Always requiring re-adjusting of orders and priority It's hard to explain. Before purge game played. After purge and deploy game fails to load. Until I fiddled load orders and file priority again. (I think some mods had files that were not suppose to get loaded and the deploy auto enabled them) It is almost as if vortex is not storing enough information about how the mod was being used and the purge and deploy would bring that mod back to its default state or something not sure.. It became a tool I became scared to use as it kept borking my game setups.. I am also speaking somewhat as a mod creator/editor. Where if I need to edit files vortex would revert changes and loose my work. The biggest stress came when the file change warnings come up and maybe my own fault. But kept loosing files thinking I was pressing the right thing. I see that someone here kept saying the MO VFS is the same as vortex but vortex uses system type etc. Actually l don't really know how MO did it. Vortex uses symlinks (highend shortcuts if you will) MO seemed use a system that confusees me to this day how it takes all those files.. then temporarily places them in the game.. it was a very good approach I am still in awe about how tanin set that up. Anyways I wanted to voice my own user experiences in vortex. I love that vortex is designed to be as simple as possible. But being a power user. I don't like stuff in my appdata, drive C, and other things. I want to be in control of my PC and it's files. Vortex to me is designed for noobs I get that. As modding is daunting It's making it easier for them to try modding. I honestly cannot understand when I see people say 400+ mods works flawlessly I don't believe it! Or they are making out they are a computer God and in reality have spent hours and days setting up orders My problem could be the mods I run not all are from Nexus mods.. some mods I am working on. Anyways I hope this was an interesting read.. cheers Shaun.
  4. 1 of three tricks worked for me, *Moving steam from C: to D: *copy steam.exe to game's exe folder (When steam updates this needs updating) *Using a hardlink/symlink to steam.exe as its always life (updated)
  5. Hi all, This is a question specifically for tannin, I want to know if the profiles are pretty straightforward, Eg: oblivion has a folder rHEtoOZBM there are two files inside. load order and plugins txt files I tried in file explorer creating another folder beside rHEtoOZBM and named it rHEtoOZBv adding the same two text files I wanted it to appear in vortex but did not, so I think there is a file which keep track of the profiles vortex creates I want to know in case of a system rebuild or other purpose where the vortex becomes broken. Can I expect so long as the same files exist in the mod directory, if I was to copy and paste the two text files above to a new profile it creates and overwrite the text files in that profile would vortex be able to use it? or are there other settings/options somewhere that I need to be careful of? cheers Shaun
  6. Hi, I tried to make vortex launch oblivion but it comes up with application load error steam error 5:0000065434 I solved it by placing steam.exe in the game folder for which ever game has this error, but there must be a better solution! cheers
  7. Hi all, I am giving vortex another shot, can I have some words of wisdom from gurus alike who are familar on best way to transfer Skyrim and Fallout4 from my desktop gaming to my laptop gaming system Some questions: *is there a way to backup and transfer vortex and the profiles of how mods are setup and ordered *do I need to purge mods to copy the steam game folders to save downloading the games again! *when I redeploy the files will the order and enabled mods stay as is? Cheers
  8. I'm now having issues when vortex is updated It deleted all my mods and leaves game with symlinks inside data. It's honestly the 4th time I've had to start over with vortex. Sadly sadly mo is cleaner.. it's too bad the latest version still doesn't work with mcm.its gotta be installed manually.. BTW. VFS? Dunno what the post above was. On about? The VFS I am speaking of was a virtual folder. Where it actually didn't touch the data folder AT ALL! It's like mo magically on every launch of the game merged fo4 data and it's own data folder to work. It's honestly the most beautiful thing I've seen in PC for a long time. The VFS 64bit needs work I think. As the 32b one works flawlessly. Seriously love what MO does!
  9. Thanks tannin for replying personally.. I will give it a shot but just grabbed the latest release of mo2 and want to try. A question., Will vortex support VFS in future iterations?
  10. I think Purge needs work it's failed a bunch of times for me. Might go back to MO for a while I like vortex and where it's heading.. but it's caused a lot of issues for me personally. If it one day supports that mo VFS I might return
  11. I have been having nothing but dramas with using vortex and how the program does symlinks. I like symlinks, its a good way to keep a filesystem from growing as your using the same file in 2 locations. but copying complete installs and setups of games from 1 pc to another is just not happening. the game copy is fine but thats because via the network copy, the symlinks turn into real files! so vortex doesnt have control of the files in fallour 4 folder With MO, it was simple. I hope that vortex will use something similar or can vortex have a button to sync to another PC and setup games remotely. include copy mods from Source to Destination maybe a backup and restore.
  12. Hey all, Is there a way to copy a COMPLETE setup of vortex and say fallout 4 to another computer as I often like to sync the game from one PC to another. With MO it was simple as it didnt do any symlinks and copying through the network copies actual files to the game. Anyone here able to explain best way to have a 1:1 synced copy of vortex and the game fallout4 on 2 PCs?
