The level of mismanagement is staggering, and I'll be amazed if whoever was responsible for this debacle still has a job.

Opt-in participation will always lead to low returns, simply because people in general won't do a thing they don't have to, even if doing it is virtually effortless. It's not so much that people are ungrateful, but that there is no advantage in going back after the wait period and hitting the button. What would be really nice, is if a mod manager could dial home with how much playtime a mod has had. Rather than the page saying that 5% of people have bothered to click a button, how nice would it be to see 10,000 downloads, 500,000 active hours.
  3. Put as simply as I can, someone at Valve monumentally mucked this up. A direct paid mod system could have worked really well - we already know this from the booming microtransaction market Three things: 1: Introducing it in the game with the biggest *free* modding community pretty much ever was spectacularly unwise. Still, that could have been ok, however 2: the pricing should have been drastically lower. I've logged 3000+ hours in Skyrim. For a good two years it was the only game I even bothered playing. I have various games active with 200+ mods in each. At the rates charged, that would cost something like £3-500, easily. No way in hellfire am I paying that. 3: the cut was atrocious. I fundamentally object to the mod author only getting 25% of my money. If your strategy is to reward modders, then do so. Even the notorious company-first profitmonger Apple only takes 30%, This looked very much like Bethesda and Valve trying a blatant cash-in on the backs of a massive pre-existing community. Having paid mod authors via the Nexus several times, this sickened me. I hope Valve and Bethesda try again, with a new property, a sensible cut and active support. They couldn't have got this much more wrong
