No - it was not as clear cut as you make it out to be. There were many different layers to this debacle. First and foremost was that the skyrim modding community was already solidly established to the point where code, resources etc etc were shared out freely to the point that almost every major mod had dependencies on others work. secondly, while I have absolutely no issue with a creator being compensated for their work, the split was atrociously unfair and the argument that "25% is better than 0%" holds absolutely no water as what you would be the precursor for is exclusivity of mods to one hosting site for a price. Basically selling your soul for a meager 25 cents on the dollar to the detriment of everyone. If this endeavor actually worked then it would spell the end of free sharing of resources and codes, the death of sites like Nexus, and the empowering of Bethesda to make broken games and still profit offf the player/mod base with no cost to them.
  2. Agreed, It was really bad. I am not a creator but I do know the the effort and time put into making Mods. And while I am on a fixed income, I appreciate everyone of you who have contributed not only to Skyrim, but Morrowind and Oblivion as well. Without you folks these games would not be near the wonderful works of art these games have achieved.
  3. You can not circumvent syeam to play skyrim but you CAN circumvent steam to mod your game - now Beth just needs to tie their toolkits to steam to make outside mod downloads not authorized
  4. This IS going to happen. Before, there was really no way in which Bethesda could effectively control modding and where the authors of mods made the content available for download. With steam/valve it is a small step to ensure only workshop mods are utilized from now on. We (gamers) accepted and heralded sites like steam and origins, now the ugly side of exclusive game conglomerates will show their heads
  5. I personally have no issue with a creator being paid for their work, provided it is something far more intricate than a weapon or armor thing. The groups and teams that created Moonpath, Falskaar, Wyrmstooth, Helgen reborn, not to shortchange the unofficial patch creators and some of the graphic overhuals are deserving of some monetary support. I had a HUGE issue with how steam/Beth was distributing the monies from the selling of mods and how they attempted to cover their greed by spewing a lot of bovine fecal matter at us. "show support to the creators of content" by taking 75% of revenue generated.
  6. Thank Talos this has occured, but this Dragon will rear it's ugly head again. The pandoras box has been opened and Bethesda can make their toolkits exclusive to steam/valve for their next games making it only possible to upload to steam. Believe when I say that modding has had a serious eye on it to figure out ways to monetize it. Places like steam and origins have basically monopolized the PC game medium by requiring us to have an account with them in order to play any games we purchase. While there ARE benefits to this situation, exploitation can and will be something we gamers must be ever on our guard for. Monetizing mods would eventually kill sites like Nexus.
  7. Sorry to necro this post but, the choice is simple, depending upon what race yosu play, especially the human races, you go for the stormcloaks, being overlorded by the thalmor is just not an acceptable option. As an Elf, you go thalmor/empire as the repercussions of the thalmor losing the next war would probably mean some horrid things for elves. As a beast race, well your screwed either way as you will be inferior regardless of which side wins. Everything can be broken down into the most simple tenet, WHO WILL BENEFIT ME THE MOST
