Is there a way to have a script run another script? Say, the spell is cast, and the script does nothing except to check if the player dies (or hits the health threshold or whatever). Then, if that statement returns true, it saves the stats and runs a separate script for the rest of the regeneration. (showracemenu, etc.) OOH! Never mind, instead of a script, how about a batch file? Batch files can run anything that doesn't need to have a reference other than the player, so it should be able to open the race menu and reset the player's stats. I don't speak much of the Oblivion scripting language, but roughly, the spell script might look something like this: if GetPlayerHealth < 1 (something to save the stats, I'm afraid I don't know how that might work. You might be able to do this in the text file, though I'm not sure.) bat "regeneration.txt" endif Batch files are a lot like regular Oblivion scripts, except they're just text files that live in the Oblivion directory. In this case, they might look a lot like this: showracemenu player.setav health XXX player.setav magicka XXX... (etc. Basically you have to have one of these for every stat.) Hope this helps. :D EDIT for major bizarreosity in formatting. Sorry about that.

I'm sorry for the long post. I am, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. :) Doctor Who is a British sci-fi show about a Time Lord called the Doctor who travels in a time machine, usually accomplishing remarkable and good works in the process. Time Lords are aliens from a planet called Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous. (By the way, I vote for an inclusion of a Kasterborous birthsign.) They live for an extremely long time, mostly because when they're on the brink of death, they can use energy to rebuild their bodies, which is why they change faces and personalities. That's what a regeneration is. What a regeneration actually looks like varies greatly, since the show has been around since the days of black-and-white. The modern versions have a CGI glowing effect, accompanied by some CGI to morph the face into the shape of the new actor. For Oblivion, the glow will be good enough. You could probably build the animation out of Bethesda's existing spell animations. Ignore all references to Daleks, the Time Vortex, and the strange scenery--that's the Doctor's ship. When Time Lords go to high school, they're taught all kinds of things about regeneration, and one of these things is the ability to pick some of what you'll look like and what your traits will be. The Doctor sucks at it, and tends to just go with the flow. However, the Master (the Doctor's arch-nemesis) was able to choose to be "young and strong," and Romana actually chose her appearance to exactly match the look of a chick she met once. I vote for the "showracemenu" option. Time Lords can't regenerate if they die without any warning, or under some other alien-y conditions I doubt we'll run into in Oblivion. :P In the show, the regenerations always take between thirty seconds to a minute and a half to complete, depending on the mood of the director at the time. Of course, it's not really feasible to be all glow-y and just sort of stand there while a Xivilai, a Spider Daedra, and a Dremora Kynval hack, beat, and zap you to bits again. I like the idea of the spell, which could last maybe 90 seconds or so, that the player casts if he's having trouble with something and anticipates dying. Time Lords regenerate only when they have to, so I'd recommend the option where he's resurrected. If it's too hard to script, we could do it the other way, but starting the regeneration only if the player is actually killed would avoid wasted regenerations.

*owns her own sonic screwdriver* Time Lords can't regenerate under EVERY circumstance, just when they have time enough to initiate the process--instead of an automatic script, have a scripted spell that has a nice shiny glowing spell effect, which the player must cast before dying. Then it could open the race menu ("showracemenu") and allow the player to choose his/her appearance--some Time Lords can do that. Of course, then all the player's stats would be reset, but there's probably a way around that, too, such as a script that saves the stats from before the regeneration, then applies them to the post-regeneration Time Lord, possibly with changes to account for varying skills between regenerations, since after they regenerate, they literally have no idea who they are. Other stuff: a TARDIS to live in (a summonable house a-la Summonable Private Quarters), a sonic screwdriver (although that could make it ridiculously easy to be a thief, given that it opens doors and whatnot), and... bananas. Bananas are good. Please keep in mind that I have no idea how to actually script any of that, I just think it would be awesome. In other news, I am a complete and utter nerd.

Awesome, it works! Thank you so much! :)

Uber Huge House of Awesome: Castle Almgard. Fantastic house. Bit of a splurge (100,000 gold), but it's a castle. Not a "ha ha, look, i maed a castel!1" mod, but a proper castle, with walls and a village and NPC servants. Located right outside of Anvil. All-Purpose House of Awesome: Summonable Private Quarters. Cast a spell, walk into the portal, and poof--a little apartment. Requires COBL and OBSE, but that's okay, because as I mentioned it's awesome. Of particular note is the Box of Wonders.

I got NifSkope 1.0.9 from the download at SourceForge off the NifTools site. I checked the virtual store and didn't find anything from NifSkope there, and I have UAC turned off and full administrator privileges. I am getting ever-so-slightly pissed at Microsoft for being apparently unable to make an OS that is compatible with anything, even their own previous OSes (or itself). Dear Microsoft, please send me Windows XP with all service packs and a $200 check to apologize for all the time I've spent trying to make programs that should have no compatibility problems at all work on Vista... Does anyone know if there is a release of NifSkope specifically for Vista? Also, moderators, could you be kind enough to move this to the right forum? :) Thanks.
-
So, I've been attempting some texture-y stuff, but I have a teensy problem: I can't get NIFSkope to work on my computer. >:( Every time I try to install it, it says that NifSkope.exe has stopped working, then that "the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the application." Then it says NifSkope.exe has stopped working again. Is this because I'm attempting to run it on 64-bit Vista? I thought I found it for Vista 64, but it used a compression format that is either a RealPlayer file or used by Linux. :wallbash: So, is there a version of NifSkope for Vista 64? Any help is enormously appreciated. :thanks: Edit: Gah, I totally meant to post this in Mods General. My bad. o.o

You've obviously forgotten about Bethesda's patented cloning technology. Also, one of the Daedric gods DID suddenly snap and kill all the adults. His name was Mehrunes Dagon, and you closed shut the jaws of Oblivion on his ass, remember? People wrote songs about you that you never hear, and Ocato gave you some crappy (but good looking) armor... -

*sneaks into Imperial City Prison, about to murder Valen Dreth* MS Office Assistant Paperclip: "Looks like you're trying to murder an obnoxious Dark Elf." Me: "Really? I'd never have guessed. Now shut up, the guard isn't gone yet." Paperclip: "Would you like me to mark the date?" Me: "What? No!" Paperclip: "I could format a letter for you." Me: "That... doesn't even have anything to do with the--" Guard: "Who's there?" Paperclip: *hops out in front of the guard* "Looks like you're trying to find an intruder..." -
Of course the CS would be necessary, but the problem is that there ISN'T a resource to use. I would do this myself, except that the FaceGen engine Bethesda used for character creation won't let me make anything that remotely looks like Stephen. That's why I need the help of the community. If someone could make a Colbert race, that would probably be easier than any of us spending hours trying to figure out why, every time I get, say, the distance between his eyes right, it somehow means that every other part of his face is made to look like he has Down's syndrome.

Oh, LOL. We go from talking about how alcoholic the game is to "the game is so dry." LOLOLOLOLOL. Personally, I don't think it is, but then I spend an awful lot of time in the Shivering Isles. Your lips to His ears. -

Maybe they're just being contrary. You know, "move along, citizen" like they're going to treat you as any other mindless user of Radiant AI. The alcohol thing sort of makes sense. Before the invention of water purification systems, water was more likely to give you a horrible, deadly disease than hydrate you. Alcohol was sterile, therefore safe. -
Some of you may have noticed an alarming problem. Bears are in Oblivion, and they cannot be stopped. Only one person has the power to rectify this: Stephen Colbert. Of course, everyone knows that Bethesda is a swirling eddy of communist propaganda, and so Stephen Colbert has not been included in the game. But yes, we most definitely need to add Stephen to Oblivion. I've been trying with the vanilla races and FaceGen for about a month now, without success--looks like Stephen's face is too statistically improbable for the default races to handle. This could be a totally awesome mod: a Stephen Colbert race, who starts out in the dungeon, fully armed, in a suit and glasses, ready to a. rid Cyrodiil of bears and b. unleash his (your) fury upon the planes of Oblivion. And the Isles. And maybe the rest of Cyrodiil, too, if he's feeling peckish. He could have special weapons/spells, as well. I've taken the liberty of coming up with a few. Sword: Truthiness Mace: Brass Balls Bow: Sweetness Axe: A New Segment Visit Starbucks: Restore Health, Magicka, Fatigue We'll Be Right Back: Chameleon Threatdown: Demoralize Smile!: Fortify Personality Who's Honoring Me Now?: Command Humanoid Who's Not Honoring Me Now?: Command Creature I am FURIOUS.: Fortify STR, CON, SPD, AGI, Health, Fatigue Beef with You: Fortify INT, WIS, Magicka The Desk: Shield I Am America: Resist Magicka Nail 'Em: Fortify Marksman Greater powers: Corporate Sponsorship: Gives you gold. That's Our Show: Insta-kill. Colbert Nation: Summons another Stephen, identical to the first. Better Know a District: Effect of cheat TMM 1--gives you every map marker, with the ability to travel to each. He's not overpowered. He's Stephen-Powered. Obviously, this would be a total joke mod, but still unbelievably awesome. At minimum, we need to have the Colbert custom race, like the Chuck Norris race (except better). I would totally do the whole thing myself, except that I am a poor, unskilled, liberal socialist. I do suspect, however, that we'd need a meshes person for his bone structure and items, a textures person to get his face right (and for the items), and someone to start him off with his proper items (not the spells, I can probably handle those). Do we have any volunteers? :D Also, any avatars that I may or may not have that may or may not feature Stephen in his glory may or may not be coincidental. :whistling:

Questions about doing retexturing mods
crysthala replied to crysthala's topic in Oblivion's Discussion
Well, fart in my face. I can't find an edition of NifSkope that works with 64-bit Vista. I tried to download it from SourceForge, but apparently, all the Vista-64 compatible versions there are are .rpms, which apparently are from RealPlayer. Which makes no sense. Is that some weird file format for compression I've never heard of before? If so, why the HELL would they release it as that instead of a nice, reasonable .exe like the other one? Can one of you really excessively nice people direct me to a working DL, pretty please? -

Questions about doing retexturing mods

It's fine, I think I get it. The texture is the present's wrapping paper, and the present is programmed to know where the corners go. :P Thanks for the help, guys. :thanks: I'll definitely need to practice before I release anything, though. -

Mine are too. I've had several characters who've murdered anyone who spoke to them. "You're a sneaky looking--BLLLLAAAAARRRGHHHH!" Thanks for those links--they work great. :) -
Nope. I have OBMM, too. Bash CAN do reordering, but it won't unless you ask it to.

I might be interested in doing textures/retextures, but I was wondering a few things before I try to get into it. They're probably noob questions, and I'm sorry if they are. :P Things are numbered because I love a well-written list, so here goes... 1. Photoshop is expensive as hell, and I'm not going to buy it just to retex for Morrowind/Oblivion. I do, however, have Macromedia Fireworks 8. Will that work, or do I absolutely have to use Photoshop? 2. According to some research I've done, you need a lot of programs to do texturing. What are these 800 programs supposed to do, and are they free? (A link to some good ones would be infinitely appreciated.) 3. How do the textures work? I figure it must be like a Christmas present, where the texture is wrapped around the mesh, because I can't see any other way for a 2D program to edit a 3D object. Or is that what one of the 800 programs you need is for? 4. How do you figure out where each part of the texture ends up on the mesh? For retextures, I don't foresee a problem, but how does this work from scratch? :thanks: for your time. :)

Showracemenu will allow you to change the face (it brings up the chargen menu for race), but it also resets your stats. There's a glitch or something you can do that will let you keep them, but Wrye Bash's face transfer is easier. This is all you have to do for it. I have Vista, so I have to use Bash, but it won't screw up your character or your game. It could, but all you have to do is not touch anything if you don't know what it does. Bash is totally separate from the game, and won't do anything you don't tell it to do. Wrye is that awesome. It also has oodles of other useful stuff in it--a load order config, a thing that will let you deactivate an ESM file, and a function that copies your modlist for easy troubleshooting, and that's only some of the stuff. It can also fix some corrupted saves. I'd highly recommend it.

Somebody turn on paintball mode? ;) Oh my god, that bugs the hell out of me. I'm standing there in my Archmage robes with my Imperial Dragon boots and gauntlets under it, my house is an icy tower deep in the icy mountains, I could cast one spell and vaporize him, and all he says is "Move along, citizen." And the Palace guards in White Gold Tower are still acting like menopausal reference librarians. "Keep quiet in the Imperial Palace!" You'll keep quiet when you're a pile of ash, n'wah. I have another character that was fined for assaulting a guard because he called the lord of Castle Almgard "citizen" and got a good slap. They have those? Why has no one told me of this? :wallbash: Are there mods for the other stuff too, like to make everyone stop telling me that Robert's Body is fantastic (Look at the muscles on me!) or that I am, indeed, wearing armor from the Dark Brotherhood and am therefore probably up to no good? (Yes. Yes, I AM a sneaky-looking sort, but you don't need to tell me that. You're risking your life just by seeing me.) I would see these mods, and use them, and weep with happiness. Please? :) -
