  1. In response to post #47425020. #47426500 is also a reply to the same post. I too have reservations about porting web development to the desktop. It's becoming increasingly common since many developers are expected to know web development now, and most don't bother learning desktop development at all. "When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." JavaScript has taken over the damn world. That said, some good stuff has been built on Electron. I trust the NMM staff will use it well.
  2. I was wondering around Mistveil Keep and found a Mysterious Note lying on the bottom shelf of the bookcase in the back left corner of the main room. It reads: "Griffith did nothing wrong, and Casca enjoyed it." - Joseph Wut? I can't find any references to this, but I'd like to figure out where it came from and what it means. Google searches point to some weird crap.
  3. I'll post the final build tonight for final suggestions (hopefully that will get this thread to 12 pages :) ). As someone who has never built a PC, is it very difficult? I've heard it's fairly easy. I've replaced a few parts, such as RAM, graphics card, and optical drive. Any gotchas to watch for?
  4. No biggie. Just wanted to clarify the situation so I can get proper advice. We can debate "more is better" all day, but it seems the parts I have are compatible. Now just to learn to build the thing. Appreciate the monitor suggestion. I'm fresh off of 6 years of using only laptops, so I'll be easy to please in that department.
  5. Did you honestly just tell him to go big or go home essentially? You really want him to stick with his GT 730m for the next couple of weeks/months? (however often he gets paid, probably not often hes giving off that high school kid vibe) A 7870 is a MASSIVE upgrade from that. You are just starting to sound like a spoiled rich kid or atleast someone with no bills to pay. By your standards no one would ever upgrade. I hold a fulltime job as a software developer, so I'm not pinching pennies. I'm budgeting simply because I don't want to pay more than I need to for the end result I want. I'm also going to have to throw in a new monitor, and I want to funnel some of the extra in the budget to that. Recently buying a house also has me on watch since the wife keeps coming up with things we "need." I'll get you the specs on the PSU soon.
  6. I understand your view. I debated this build for a while, but I still believe it would be a significant upgrade over my laptop, especially in doubling CPU cores and RAM. I probably overstated the abilities of my laptop. I have to turn grass way down, turn off grass shadows, use 2XAA, use Low shadows, and turn down draw distances to stay consistently over 45FPS. I'm not really an intense gamer. The newest games I play are Skyrim and Bad Company 2. The newest stuff isn't really a concern.
  7. Always appreciate sparking a debate. Just to clarify a few things... Husain is right about the budget. I should have explicitly stated that. I need to stay probably within $50 of the posted build. However, I'm also willing to accept the constraints of the budget. I'm shooting for a tweaked Ultra preset, i.e. 4x AA and shadows turned down quite a bit. I do enjoy modding the game, but I'm still willing to stick with 1k textures for the most part and probably won't use an ENB unless I try some performance versions. I do realize this is a mid-range build at best, but I'm not convinced that it's worth waiting and that I can't achieve my goal. I'm currently running a mid-range gaming laptop with a dual-core i5, 4GB RAM, and a GT 730M with 2GB of VRAM. That laptop runs a modded, tweaked Ultra preset at or above 45FPS most of the time, but it's a pain to make laptops compatible with Skyrim and the hardware is starting to wear. If I can achieve the benchmarks I've seen for this card/setup with vanilla Ultra Skyrim, I'll be a very happy camper. I'm gathering that the parts should all be compatible, so I think I'm good to go there. Any opinions on my upgrade paths and constraints in that area?
  8. (Hoping this is the right place for this. I couldn't find another fitting forum category). http://pcpartpicker.com/p/v9DkHx I have a friend that will be donating a PSU. I've been dying to build a PC for the first time now that I finally have the money. I mostly took parts from a prebuilt Newegg special a few months ago as I wasn't sure where to start, but this rig would fit my budget and seems like it would be capable for what I'm trying to get. Skyrim has become such a big part of my life that I've planned an entire build around it. My end goal is to run Skyrim on *mostly* ultra settings (shadows and AA turned down) at 50-60 FPS. I basically want to know 2 things: Are all of these parts compatible? I know enough about parts to choose the specs I want, but I'm unsure of how to choose parts that will work in perfect harmony. Again, this was mostly built from a Newegg preset, so I'm guessing it will be fine. Is this ALL I'll need to put the PC together? I'd like to know any possible extra things I'll need to buy to assemble it. I know I'll need thermal paste, but I'd like to know of anything else.I'd also love general suggestions. I've debated 7850 vs. a GTX 750Ti for a long time, but it seems the 7850 would be a better deal for the money. I've seen several Skyrim benchmarks for the 7850 out there, and they all seem to indicate that it can run Skyrim on Ultra (we're talking 8x AA and Ultra Shadows which KILL performance) with no trouble.
  9. You'll have to utilize roleplaying. You won't find much in the way of in-game support for this one. Go destroy some imperial camps.
  10. Why concern yourselves with timestamps over content? I've been using Better Magic with all of the most recent unofficial patches for a long time now. No issues. Perhaps the mod author hasn't found a need to update it. That doesn't equate to abandonware.
  11. Try Better Magic or Balanced Magic. I've used the former for quite a while now, and I primarily play mages.
  12. We'll need more information to help. What do you mean by "doesn't work?" Do you get an error message? Does Skyrim crash? Are you able to activate the rack but the weapon never shows up? Does the weapon show up and disappear later? Does the weapon fall directly to the floor or hang in midair?
  13. Because being a mermaid or fairy directly contrasts the tone Bethesda was trying to set. Skyrim is a cold, harsh world ravaged by a civil war and the return of dragons. IMO, the game isn't even "dark" enough to reflect this. As far as the daedra you're concerned about, they're simply part of the lore. Read up on the daedra, the creation of Mundus, and why daedra retained so much power. Lore states that they are able to greatly intervene in the life of mortals. If your player seeks the power the deadra supply, it's your decision to make the deal. I think you need to recognize the opportunity for roleplaying in this game. If you want your character to reflect your disdain for the evil in the world, create a Paladin. Embrace the blessings of Azura and Meridia and rid the world of evil. Skip the Dark Brotherhood questline completely or destroy all of them. Download a mod that allows you to destroy the Thieves' Guild. Download a mod that allows you to remove daedric quests from your journal.
  14. I've always been curious as to how others choose their victims when playing a "dark" character. I'm specifically referring to random victims, i.e. those who you are not required to kill for a specific questline. I've always found this difficult. It's easy to determine who you want to kill from a morality perspective. For example, many people kill Nazeem due to his annoying nature and condescending tone. However, where I find the decision to be tough is when factoring in how the game actually works. I'm often reluctant to kill someone random (even if I really want to) as I'm afraid it will "break" a quest further down the line. I know that some NPCs are marked essential to resolve this, but there are many cases where killing certain NPCs would dramatically alter a playthrough later on. I've resorted to an immersion-breaking system in which I research the NPC on UESP Wiki or a similar site before deciding to kill them. What do you do? Are you a free spirit that murders everyone in your path? Or are you also concerned with the impact of your murder?
