  1. I've made a similar post on other modding forums related to Skyrim but they have all gone basically ignored, so I'm going to try here.

I'm trying to mod my Skyrim's graphics on a 750 Ti 2 gb vram. I've ran into multiple issues involving lod popping in at super close distances, grass popping in with the same issues, shading issues, performance issues, ect. Here are my full specs.

Nvidia Gtx 750 Ti 2 GB vram

    12 gb onboard ram

    Intel i5 2.67 ghz

    Windows 8.1

I'm planning to do a complete redo of my Skyrim modding. I really need help with what I should do to mod my game's graphics and keep performance generally stable. I'm fine with dropping to like 30-40 fps if it means the game looks great and doesn't crash. My big thing is I want to remove stuttering and CTDs. I can list my current load order if need be, but I don't think it matters seeing as I basically just want to start over.

I use Wrye Bash, Loot, Mod Organizer, TES5EDIT, ENBoost, and SKSE. So I already have all of these set up and ready to go, I'm probably just going to remove all of my existing mods, not sure if there's anything else I should delete. I'll post pastebins of my current prefs/default inis, however once again I plan to just delete them anyways so I doubt it really matters. I just want to try to learn from my past mistakes.

    Skyrim Prefs.ini: http://pastebin.com/5kAqnkSn

I also think it's important to add that I've followed STEP's core guide and it's given me a lot of trouble. Don't know if this means anything, but figured it might give more background.

  2. Hello everyone, I'm looking to find some advice for modding as I just recently updated my computer and I'm not really sure what mods are smart to download. I'm running on a GTX 750 Ti FTW 2gb, 12 gb of ram, i5 2.67 ghz processor, windows 8. My hope with this thread is to find someone who is either experienced with modding, computers, or both. I'd like to bounce ideas back and fourth on what mods I could install graphically to make the game look great without totally killing the FPS. I also have a few other MISC questions involving a few particular genres of mods which are:
-Has anyone had any success using city/village overhaul mods? They seem to cause an immense amount of instability with my game.
-As far as texture overhaul mods go, which is more recommended? Skyrim 2k HD, or Tamriel reloaded?
Past these, I am also having an extremely hard time modding distant LOD. I've tried most of the top recommended LOD mods, but they seem to just make my game crash within about 2-5 minutes of gameplay, and even that is wishful thinking. Is there a way to mod the distant lod to be less of an eye sore for my particular machine?
I'm sorry if these questions are coming off kind of annoying, nooby, or underinformed. I've been modding for a while now, but I always seem to run into the same issue. I mod the game, it becomes extremely buggy and unstable, then I need to try to remod it again. I'm trying to get my game to an overhauled, yet stable version of Skyrim. I'm going to post my mod load order below and I'm absolutely open to any advice anyone can give me. Also, I've followed most of the .ini tweaks from the youtuber GamerPoet. He seems quite knowledgeable.

  3. I just installed 12 gb of ram, and a GeForce GTX 750 Ti with all of it's drivers installed. I have a DX11, Intel® Core i5 CPU @2.67GHz. What is my limit as far as graphical mods go? I just did a test with all my current mods (approximately 110 total) on max possible graphics, stayed at 60+ FPS without any drops or stuttering even in combat and in busy cities such as solitude and whiterun. I'm not familiar with ENBs, so if anyone wouldn't mind giving me the short on how to use them that'd be great too. I'll be doing research of my own too so I'm not a complete lazy ass.

    Any help is appreciated, thanks!

  4. Hello, I was wondering if a mod like this existed. The tempering system as of the current game consists of taking Weapon A, and depending on your smithing skill you can make it permanently "Fine" or "Legendary" ect. Is there a mod where weapons and armor that have been tempered gradually lose this over time? And perhaps, even when returning to their original state, it'll degrade to something like maybe "Damaged" or "tarnished" or "broken"? I don't know if a mod like this exists yet, but I would love if it did with reasonable mechanics, such as obviously a steel blade isn't going to break after a couple of fights, but maybe after multiple fights and hits it'll become more dull, to which you take it to a grindstone to resharpen it. Same with armor, an armor made out of fine metal won't break after a few fights, but maybe weaker armors, say for example fur, leather, or hide will break easier. Let me know what you guys think, and if there is a mod like this please let me know at your convenience.

  5. Hey Warpedd,

So you want some tips on getting a good game of Skyrim started on the path of modding.

I have a system of how to get that started.

Here are the Apps I use.

    MOD Organizer,

-Great Program, after you get the hang of this the only time you need to reinstall Skyrim is when your forced to system wipe >< squinty cause I just had to do that last week haha.

-Gophar has a video on how to get started.

    TesVEDIT

-Great for cleaning the DLC's and for some other handy features.

-Gopher has a Video on that.

    Wyre Bash

-Must have app for making patches which is pretty much mandatory faster than you'd think.

    Skyrim Configulator

-I use this to work on the INI files particularly shadows.

-With the I-5 chipset you want to turn on Threading with this program it should really help (Note if performance does not improve with threading revert that change!)

    INI Tweaks

-Mostly personal taste, I usually make adjustments to the 3rd person camera

-You can google up Skyrim INI tweaks for a bunch of different ones but the best ones are on STEP WIKI

-There are a ton of bad tweaks so look up Skyrim Optimization

    Texture Optimizer

    -Essential

-There are a shameful amount of badly optimized textures (I should know I'm responsible for at least a dozen)

-Bad textures can be anything from a bad size, to missing mip maps, and a host of other problems that does nothing more than bog down your everything from the file fetch system to hog up VCard space.

-Optimizers fix that stuff and most even downsize as well.

-Always use one of these on files you intend to install that contain textures.

-Best time to fire it up is after installing a host of textures.

    -This will increase performance.

-Due Note, some Authors explicitly state not to do this with their file, mostly because they already have....So be aware and read up.

    SKSE

-its meant for extending the script system but you can also install this for a boost.

->there are some extra boost tweaks online to look up like memory boosting that you just plop some lines into SKSE.ini file for.

Really important, even when you know what your doing.

    1) only install a handful of mods in a go, make sure to play the game rather than install 10-80 mods in a sitting...(Real important cause each mod could be something that doesn't work with another mod that is installed Incompatible)

    2) if you mod something keep a post it note of what you modded...(cause u know maybe it doesn't work or worse made things crash GUILTY)

    3) Try to make sure that your in fact well rested and aware when modding. Guilty here too, sleepiness causes more mod conflicts than mods!

#1 Mod to get started is LAL: Live another life.

--->It really helps in modding because you do not want to test load orders via the helgon sequence.

    --->Must have mod.

After I get those installed I try to decide on a gameplay theme that I stick too and that decides what mods get put into my folder and which don't.

    Example

I really like the survival theme soo I focus only on those mods which enhance that.

    Frostfall

    Wet and Cold

Winter is Coming and Cloaks of Skyrim

    Ineed

    Real Shelter

Those right there are going to start clogging Papyrus more than most want to believe at that point I'm real careful about making choices about script mods...

Why? Well those mods make a lot of call functions often to the system so adding more stuff if it doesn't fit the theme then no it doesn't get in.

I'd rather play then crash or make guesses at whats causing the crash.

But that line up works great and it would suit a wildlife mod like SKYTEST really well, now SKYTEST actually doesn't get along well with mods that overhaul "Factions" and its also going to add a bit more onto the script system too, gotta say though that it does make outdoorsman type of game really a lot of fun.

From there I look around for mods that enhance the outdoors without using scripts or making changes to factions. Location mods play real well to this and anything that adds new places really helps the experiences of traveling around Skyrim when you can happen along something new and see it for the first time.

In those games I tend to just dump a bunch of houses and locations overhauls right in willy nilly lols.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With that computer I really don't think your going to want to take the FPS hit from fancy textures or EMB's. I put a strong preference on performance myself so I don't use much texture wise outside of armor packs.

That said you might want to take a look at Unnofficial HD Texture Pack.

Also while your at it get all the USKP's for each DLC you have. Good way to start your rebuild is with those.

Thanks for all the tips. Would you recommend I delete everything skyrim related and start over? Or is it better right now to just start by removing things bit by bit. Reason I ask is because I've made changes to the .ini in an attempt to help performance, and i've also downloaded a lot of things for like mod organizer and ENBoost to try to once again help performance.

  6. Hello, recently my Skyrim game has gotten a weird glitch where the shading is for lack of a better word, dotted around the edges. I'll include a screenshot of it down below because I don't really know how to explain it and I don't really know what triggered it to hapehttp://puu.sh/cWxH7/d3920526d2.jpghttp://puu.sh/cWxFf/1bb099f513.jpghttp://puu.sh/cWxkK/4747e7df9c.jpg

  7. I'm also thinking of doing a complete deletion of my skyrim folder and doing a fresh reinstall, considering I think i've installed some things correctly (such as ENBoost). Would this be a step backwards or forwards?

Also, some extra information. I'm using Mod Organizer, I only have the dawnguard DLC.

  8. Hello, this past week I made a post regarding my system's limits with Skyrim. I've been unmodding and trying to add a lot of mods that help performance, but I wanted to know if I could get some help with actually modding my game depending on my specs. By this I mean I don't know what mods are too heavy for my system and I'm trying to get a good idea on how I can make my game look somewhat decent, but I still want to focus on the performance. If people could recommend a mod load order depending on my specs, that'd be great. I'm especially concerned with some things like ENBoost that were recommended to me in my latest post which I'll link below. But for now, here's my computers spec and a link to my other forum post..

  9. Sure thing. Keep in mind I use ELEP ENB with ELE + Relighting Skyrim for my lighting. For weather I use Pure Weather. Sorry I don't have any exterior shots. Pure Weather without an ENB can look a little over saturated for my and some other peoples taste but ELEP tones it down nicely and looks very good. If you don't use the ENB I would still recommend ELE and Relighting Skyrim but maybe change out the weather for CoT. ELEP ENB is relatively very lightweight without just using the ENBoost only component of ENB.

Are those all ENBs that you listed? I'm not very familiar with ENBs so I'm hesitant to try them.. :s

  10. Yeah drop the 2k textures for sure. Keep RLO, it looks good and is performance friendly and handles weather if I remember correctly (ELFX looks good but can hit the performance a little). SMIM you can try with and without and see how it hits your frame rates. Out of those 3 mods you listed the 2k textures is the biggest performance hit by far.

I have no idea what your graphics card is but just for reference I have a ddr5 radeon 7850 with 1 gig of ddr5 vram 9 (ddr3 vram is really bad) and 8 gigs of system memory and I just use the official high-res texture pack and some other textures and i'm bordering on the performance sweet spot using a very light weight ENB for the shadows. Disabling the ENB only gains me about 2 frames per second (depending on where I am in game).

Can you show me some screenshots of the ENB you use? I wouldn't mind a decent low end one for brightness especially, I seem to have an issue even with RLO or EFLX where the game is either too bright or too dark (Like for example, when I go into a shop like belathors general goods, it's darker than a cave)

    No dedicated graphic card?

Your bios is pretty dated. You should check your motherboard model and download latest version manualy. Don't forget to create restore point first.

With only 4gb of ram your system might start dropping memory to page file when skyrim goes above aprox 2.5gb (windows + applications running in the background uses aroung 1.5gb). Everytime it does this you will see performance decrease or CTD/freeze if the application does not recover. I recommend getting 8gb for gaming. If this is not gonna happen anytime soon you should close all unnecessary programs/applications before running skyrim (check in task manager or get program that does that automaticaly).

Not many ppl know it, but old sound drivers can drop your fps a lot. There were guys relying on windows and other program updates, finding out in the end they had drivers from 2006. Latest Realtek version is from May 2014.

How to check your sound driver version:

-Right click on sound icon on your windows taskbar.

    -Select Playback Devices.

-Right click on Speakers, select Properties.

    -Click on Properties button.

    -Go to drivers tab.

Google driver download site and install manualy, if necessary.

Don't forget to set your sound quality under Advanced tab to 16 bit 48000 Hz (DvD Quality), while you're at it.

I'll check out the sound thing, but it's weird because despite all that, Skyrim is the only game my computer struggles with. Almost every single game I've ever ran on my three years of having this computer usually runs at ultra with 50-60 FPS, but Skyrim is a pretty unique game with a lot going on. I'm thinking I might do lordmonkus said and just get rid of my graphics mods, and just live with vanilla skyrim stuff. But then at least I can mod my gameplay a lot.

  12. Creating a restore point will do nothing to save your computer if updating the bios goes tits up. Unless you are very comfortable with bios updating I highly advise against it unless your motherboard has new features the new bios will enable. Updating your bios can go horribly wrong if done incorrectly and very rarely will improve system performance by any real amount if at all.

You would probably gain more performance from tweaking your windows services than from any bios update and it is a much safer thing to do. Blackviper has a great site on all the services you can tweak for your system. Turning off all the unnecessary services will free up valuable memory and cpu cycles. Just make a restore point and when in doubt about a service you aren't sure about in the guide just follow the recommended setting or set it to manual instead of disabling.

But certainly update your drivers, nothing severe can go wrong that cannot be fixed (bad bios update = broken system).

Having said that though without knowing your graphics card you are going to be limited in just how good you can make your Skyrim look with only 4 gigs of ram. There are some options just don't expect miracles. Your biggest gains in looks will come from using good performance friendly weather and lighting mods.

Everything BlackRose said in his first post is correct though. Do all of that and you should be able to squeeze what you can out of your system. Any further advice will have to be based on what graphics card you are using. Skyrim Project Optimization is a good mod to add to the list.

Going under the assumption your graphics card is not the greatest and you only have 4 gigs of ram I would certainly avoid using any sort of ENB aside from using the ENBoost feature only. Stay away from any high resolution textures and mods that add a lot of environmental objects such as npcs and buildings.

I'm thinking of downgrading, I usually play with skyrim 2k textures and RLO and SMIM, so maybe I'll just completely ignore graphics and just focus on gameplay. I appreciate the advice.

If more information is needed let me know, I want to figure this out once and for all.

  14. 1. You haven't posted your pc specs, stating just your fps is too vague. It would be easier to ask people with similiar rigs for their mod list.

    2. What mods are in your load order atm?

    3. Make sure to:

    -Install ENBoost

-Get SKSE. Download "SKSE pre-download ini for lazy users" from nexus (it has memory patch).

-Install Mod Organizer (you will be able to create few mod profiles and quickly check your performance)

-Plug TES5Edit into Mod Organizer. Clean Bethesda Master Files and other dirty mods. Check Gopher tutorials on youtube.

-Plug LOOT (BOSS replacement) into Mod Organizer. Let it sort your mod list.

    -Download Performance PLUS

-Read "Skyrim Stability Guide" by FireFreak111 here at nexus.

I have everything you mentioned except the ENBoost and performance plus. I'm going to list my specs in a seperate post, just surprised anyone bothered to answer lol

  15. I'm trying to figure out what my game's boundries are for Skyrim, which I know sounds weird because every game i've ever played on this computer can run on ultra settings without any issues. I want to figure out what my limits are with modding, because I've tried to mod and remod my game time and time again, but I get CTDs occasionally and some places in the game come to a crawl at like 10-15 FPS, but other places run exceptionally well at like 50-60 FPS. My real goal is to get my game to look decent, but have it run great, and to perhaps drop down the CTDing a bit. I can list my Dxdiag here and my current mod list, but I doubt anyone will bother to respond to this anyways.

    Deuces.

  16. Thanks for all the replies everyone, I've been tinkering around with a few house mods and i've somewhat settled on silverfish grotto, but I don't know if I like the idea of it being in a cave. I'm going to keep looking around for some mods, as I don't have dragonborn yet. Despite this, I appreciate everyone's recommendations and feel free to list any more!

  17. I too don't like to be just given things by mods, I like to earn it. however in my house mods I always just give it to the player. I do this because these mods were made for my self and where did my character live before I got caught by the imperials? was I just homeless? no I lived in whatever house I have turned on before I was caught. that's my thought about that. I always found it odd that the player lived no wear before hand, no one new the player nor does the player even know where they are in the start of these types of games..

    I feel ya.
