I used to have this problem too but I found out that the mod "Better Tel Mithryn" is the cause. The esp for it is Tel Mithryn.esp.

I used alternate start to start out in the dark brotherhood and the very first save, Festus Krex was gone. I'll try out your solutions and see if they work, thanks for the response!

They don't even appear at all. If I try to teleport to them, it teleports me to an empty spot they should be at. If I try to spawn a copy in, nothing happens. If I teleport them to me, they "teleport" to me, but they are still missing. The game says they are there but dialogue with them is impossible and so are npc conversations, which makes the non old npcs they are talking to as "this person is busy" for eternity. How do I fix this? I have no mods that specifically target old npcs. Only ones that I think of are Nordic Faces. One odd thing I notice is, when Fralia gray-mane has her conversation with Olfrid and his son, Olfrid is there but she isn't. I would think Olfrid counts as an old npc but apparently not in the same category as others.

When I say gone, I mean he is completely gone. I have done [player moveto his refid] and it teleports me to an empty spot near where Cicero is when he first comes to the dark brotherhood sanctuary. When I did [prid his refid] I got him selected then typed [moveto player] and he still didn't show up. When I did [player moveto his refid] again, it teleported me to the spot where I supposedly moved him. I have even tried spawning a new Festus, but nothing spawned. How do I fix this? I don't have any mods in particular that I know of that changes him or the dark brotherhood except for "Hidden Dark brotherhood entrances". It has ruined the quest since he has lines that need to be said for the quest to continue and if I try to talk to anyone it says "thi person is busy". I did choose the dark brotherhood for my alternate start. EDIT: Nevermind, not only is he gone, but so is EVERY SINGLE OLD NPC. Same problems apply to them as well.

I recently got back into Skyrim once again to have a grand time spending more time modding than playing. I have modded Skyrim for years, and there is always new problems no matter what. I thought that since I dealt with almost every problem and know my way around in modding, it should be fine if I just reinstall all my old mods right? NOPE! Another problem! This CTD isn't caused by a missing master, all .dll's should be up to date, SKSE is correct version, Steam verifies integrity file is correct no problem, sorted all plugins through LOOT, went through every warning/message, got max compatibility between all mods, not passed the 255 plugin limit, and pretty much everything else I could find online. It is a (probably) poor attempt at compressing and optimizing textures and something with BSA archives while using Cathedral Assets Optimizer. After doing that and running a bashed patch, my game crashes after the logo right when the main menu pops up. The wheel is moving, imperial alduin symbol is there, and the enbseries text is there, but when the menu text is about to pop up, BOOM! CTD. I tried everything I could, and I am questioning why I bothered getting the game again. Someone please help! [sOLVED!] The problem was Paramount: FPS galore mod. It was working fine, but when I ran CAO, the crashes happened. What resembled a missing master CTD was, in fact, probably a messed up texture or mesh. Guys I figured it out. It was a messed up DynDOLOD. Apparently there is some missing meshes that I don't know how to solve, and disabling it for now fixed it. I am sorry for the lost time you guys spent replying to help me, but thank you anyways! :)

Thank you for going through that list and helping me out. I have looked through many of those posts but some of them don't even have solutions. The mods for LE were ported over and converted to SE. Wyrmstooth is still being maintained but the author has the files in some other website and updating it. I am certain the scripts don't cause the crashes because only in heavy areas like Windhelm does it crash.

I have a pretty heavy modded Skyrim that runs perfectly in interiors/wilds (with a crash every 30 minutes or so). I have SSE Fixes, ENBoost, Bug Fixes, USSEP, and pretty much anything else that can be used to prevent CTDs. I crash when I am outside Windhelm all the time. I have sorted by LOOT and made a bashed patch, made sure there was no missing meshes and got all compatibility patches for all conflicting mods.
