File bug reporting system and image uploading updates
Khettienna replied to Dark0ne's topic in Site Updates
As someone who has been uploading mods here for years, I just want to say that I am very appreciative of the new file publishing process, including the new image uploading interface. Very well done. Thank you! -
(PETITION) unskippable video adds cross the line
Khettienna replied to mikeloeven's topic in Site Support
I've said it already, and you've probably read it, but just in case... here. The big picture is important. The site has to get paid for somehow. You won't have a site without free users, though, because the modders will pack their bags too if they aren't getting high traffic (versus other sites, mod quality/popularity notwithstanding). I've never seen a community get this upset about ads, but I've also never seen so many abrasive ads on a "community" site. On all the other modding sites I visit, people complain about the ads on this site, or ask if you've gotten a virus again because there are so many ads. Fellow modder friends of mine have picked up their mods and moved elsewhere, because they don't even want to come here to check for feedback on their uploads. The breadth and volume of complaints is astonishing. I hope you will consider that seriously, and not just dismiss it because "of course there were going to be complaints". -
I wasn't stating functionality has been lost - that snippet is from another thread, as I mentioned, and it was theoretical. Though, I have heard some folks say they feel that it has already been lost, and that they are moving their mods elsewhere. So, the spiral has started.

"Your download will be available after this brief video brought to you by Playwire.com." I don't really mind text ads or static images hanging out on the page. I (barely) stomached the inline videos. This is too far for me. I already had adblock and flashblock turned on for this site after the first virus fiasco, but I still got this popup window, and there didn't appear to be a way to start the download without watching the video. I realize things have to get paid for somehow, but there has to be a better way. Ads this heavy-handed are going to chase off your free users. Without your free users, download numbers will shrink, and modders won't find incentive to upload here. It's a downward spiral for everyone. I want this site to be successful because I want to continue hosting mods here and get the heavy foot traffic. So please, find another way to generate revenue other than scaring off the free users. Maybe find ways to improve the site, so that people will have greater incentive to pay for memberships. I paid for mine when I could out of loyalty and gratitude, not because of special features. In fact, here's a thing I posted in a thread on the same subject on the official forums. Buddah rightly pointed out that we should be posting about it here, not there, so here's a paste: So yeah, to those of you who say, "Just get a subscription! Easy pie!" Well, it's not for everyone, actually. You can't expect to know other people's circumstances. Also, not everyone is such a "hardcore" modder or mod user that they would pay, anyway - and they never will be if they grump off from modding sites because the ads are overwhelming. So, there's my plea. Please find another way.

New distribution permissions options for all files
Khettienna replied to Dark0ne's topic in Site Updates
@zzzztz: And when you're a tyrannical leader, you're welcome to take whatever you "must" have and make people do what "must" be done with them at your whim. But since right now you're not King, you don't get to make the rules of this website, or Bethesda's terms of use, or copyright law, and you don't get to own any modders, or any mods - really, just you're lucky mods exist at all and you get to see them in any form. So I would say, in this case, use of the word "must" is probably a poor choice. Try asking nicely, and with the understanding that you don't get to pick. Edit: emote failure -

Also, two more interface notes: The text field for Credits doesn't seem to be taking [ list ] tags correctly; the last line is displayed as though not part of the list, and shows its tags. The tickbox for wanting to specify one's own permission settings doesn't "stick" from one edit to the next. Edit: And for the record, yes, this is much cleaner. Thank you again. =) -
New distribution permissions options for all files
Khettienna replied to Dark0ne's topic in Site Updates
@Dark0ne: Thank you, that suits me just fine. =) Welp, I will try not to not take my assumed-criminalness to heart, then, and let you search my bags everytime I leave the store with a new purchase. ;-) @holbrook: Erm, that's not my post you're debating with, I tink it was Offkorn's. Mine was all interface-related. @star-mystyk: A true patch will not actually include any of your content, at least not without being dependent on your mod. Thus it would neither compete with your original mod, nor distribute your resources, and would be considered fair play all-around. If that's not the case, you probably want to re-word your complaint to make a better case for yourself, noting that your resources are actually being distributed without your approval. I would actually like to ask about this to gain some clarity. There are a lot of mods - some of them popular, well-loved, long-standing mods made by upstanding modders - who have used either resources or "ideas" (i.e. plugin-only work) without explicit permission. In many of these cases, "fair use" (not in the legal sense maybe, just in the practical sense, I don't want to argue about what "fair use" is or isn't) was assumed because they gave proper credits, the original maker left no statements about permissions one way or the other, the original maker could no longer be contacted and was assumed to have left the scene, and/or they expressed willingness to cease & desist if the original modder expressed any opposition to the use of said resources or ideas. So it could be that a mod that's been up for two years now includes something from a mod that came out four years ago from a modder who hasn't even logged in as many years. How will you be handling these situations? Will those mods be considered in violation? I have a personal example I'll toss out for the masses to scrutinize: Gold Road Cottage was the first mod I ever released, as kind of a self-tutorial. It started out as this mod here, and there are plenty of elements of the original mod still left in my version. This mod contains no resources, only plugin work, if that makes any difference. I also know I'm not the only one who has edited & distributed this mod, because it had bugs and a few people have uploaded "fixed" versions here or there over the years. The original maker did come back after a year and a half of inactivity just long enough to note that he would like credit if anyone redistributes the mod, which I think implies the allowance of distribution; however, I think a few of us had uploaded our versions before he actually clarified this one way or another. Now, maybe him coming back and leaving a clarifying statement saved us all. But if he hadn't, would we all be in trouble right now? Are you hunting such mods and weeding them out? Do people who have used resources and/or plugin work in such a manner need to be busy re-working their mods to not contain that work, or pulling their mods down? TLDR: I'm probably just being dense, but I'd like some black-and-white clarity on reuse of likely-abandoned mods with no permissions specified. -
New distribution permissions options for all files
Khettienna replied to Dark0ne's topic in Site Updates
I heartily agree with both of these. I like the intent of what you're doing here. I don't like the execution. These dialogue boxes and warnings seem to be increasing in size and color saturation every time you add a new one, and they're getting spammy for both uploaders and downloaders. It feels hostile. I have to put my permissions and credits in my Readmes anyway. Now I get to do it twice - once for the Readme, and once for Nexus. Except the Nexus drop-downs can't actually sum what is in my Readme with any sense or accuracy, so I'm forced to choose the closet thing, and copy/paste that portion of my Readme into your boxes anyways to clarify, and then it's just a confusing mess because the two are right next to each other and say blatantly different things. I suggest you just do away with the drop-downs entirely, and just leave a friendly reminder for users to give credit and set permissions. Maybe link to an article with details on what that is, for new uploaders. If you MUST have users define permissions (or be stuck with what you've chosen for them, in the case of absence or apathy), consider tickboxes. Ones that don't make logical sense to used together can cancel each other out, and some will have a few sub-options, and generally the uploader can tick any number or combination. I came up with these, which may be too much or not enough: Mod Usage: You may not distribute this mod. You may distribute this mod freely. [Only for the game I made it for] [The mod must not be altered in any way.] [You must give me credit for my work.] [You must notify me.] [You must include a link back to my download.] [You must include my original documentation.] [You must not require payment for my work or access to my work.] You must ask my permission before distributing this mod. You may distribute translations of this mod freely. [The mod must not be altered except where necessary for the translation.] [Only for the game I made it for] [You must give me credit for my work.] [You must notify me.] [You must include a link back to my download.] [You must include my original documentation.] [You must not require payment for my work or access to my work.] You must ask my persmission before distributing a translation of this mod. My Resources: You may distribute my resources from this mod freely. [Only for the game I made it for] [You must give me credit for my work.] [You must notify me.] [You must include a link back to my download.] [You must include my original documentation.] [You must not require payment for my work or access to my work.] You must ask my permission before distributing my resources from this mod. You may not distribute my resources from this mod. Other Resources: This mod contains resources originally made by someone else, so you must follow thier wishes for distribution of those resources. In this last case, there need be no other options, because nobody should get to define permissions for someone else's work. If it was a free-to-use resource, any conscientious modder should still go look at the original source to be sure of that fact before re-using the resource. Just an idea anyway, in an effort to not complain without at least trying to help. I do like what you mean to be doing here. Edit: no codebox tags? :( Edit 2: Posting over you is awesome. >.< -
Hey, I just wanna chime in here! I replaced the interior mesh of the house in Better Benirus manor (the 3d model that makes up the walls, floors and ceilings). If that mesh isn't in the right spot, you will indeed fall through the floor! To verify it is there, look for this file on your hard drive: ...Oblivion\Data\Meshes\Khettienna\BBM\KhetBBMInterior.nif If it's not there, try re-installing the mod. If you've gotten the hang of OBMM by now, you can download the omod version to make it all super simple. Hope this helps. :)

Was this ever finished? :D

In Windows Explorer, click Tools, the Folder Options. Click on the View tab, then uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types". Then you'll see "Oblivion.ini" instead of just "Oblivion".

This one is using the HGEC body ! Now I'm even more excited.

Download & install TES4Gecko. Run it, click the "Merge Plugins" button, and place a number (higher number = higher priority if two mods edit the same thing) next to each plugin you want to merge. Click OK, name your new plugin, and there you go. :)

How Do You Package Your Mods for Upload?
Khettienna replied to David Brasher's topic in Oblivion's Classic Discussion
Like RGMage2, I also separate everything out into a new folder. Then I create a .7z archive of that folder and an omod, and test both by installing them clean back into my game. If all goes well, both get uploaded. Testing your uploads this way can prevent a lot of errors, I have learned from experience. :) -
Beginner asks: What are the essentials?
Khettienna replied to jedimarine's topic in Oblivion's Classic Discussion
Here's what I wish I'd done the first time I wanted to start using mods. 1-Backup your modless Oblivion install into another folder called "Oblivion - New". 2-Install OBSE. OBSE doesn't do anything you can see, it just allows other mods to do really awesome stuff that wouldn't otherwise be possible. Many mods depend on it. 3-Install OBMM. OBMM lets you install mods packaged in .omod format, which is usually easier than doing things manually. You can also create omods out of any mod that doesn't offer an omod package. The biggest boon is that it will uninstall whole mods instantly, so you don't have to weed out files manually. 4-Install Wrye Bash. Myriad of features, including NPC/savegame face importing, load order management, etc... most particularly, it will create a patch to merge changes from mods that ordinarily don't work in tandem with each other. Takes some learning. 5-Install Windom Earl's Crash Prevention System. You won't see anything in the game change, except the game will crash less. 6-Install the Unofficial Oblivion Patch, as well as the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch, and the Unofficial Official Mods patch for any official DLC mods you are using. 7-Back up your whole Oblivion folder again, and call it "Oblivion - Patched". 8-Install mods from there. As mentioned, once you get a setup of stable mods you know you'll always want for every character, you might want to back it up a third time. Heavily recommended low-stress mods: -Darnified UI makes the UI fit better on a PC. Smaller fonts, smaller & moveable HUD, can see more at once in inventory, etc... -EVE Variants HGEC Body Replacer - Body replacement in .omod format that comes with all the stock items made to fit the body and lets you choose options during installation. -Cobl - offers omod install, and you can choose options during installation. Adds a lot of richness to the game, and some great and convenient features. Many great mods take advantage of this added richness, too. -Health & Magicka Overhaul - provides a nice retroactive rebalance of how health & magicka rise during leveling, so you don't have to worry so much about where you're putting your stat points. -Toggleable Quantity Prompt - CTRL + click in inventory to move 1 item at a time without prompts, SHIFT + click to move whole stacks without prompts. -A Takes All - Pressing "A" while having a container open loots all its contents. -DZ Auto Harvest - Gives you spells you can cast to auto-harvest all ingredients around you (unless it would be stealing). Choose the lowest-radius spell to make it a convenience rather than a cheat. Can also be configured via in-game menu to literally auto harvest everything near you all the time, and/or also harvest from containers. -Setsuna Training Dummies - Makes it possible to skill up from shooting or smashing on regular ole' archery targets and training dummies, no configuring required. -No Psychic Guards - pretty self-explanatory. Some of these require OBSE. All of them are mods I find pleasing on any character, and have used extensively with zero conflicts or bugs. None of them require mod-installing expertise, they are just "set it and forget it" type mods. On the subject of Wrye Bash vs. OBMM, I use both for different reasons. I use OBMM to install and uninstall, plus it handles a pesky thing called Archive Invalidation for me automatically. I use Wrye Bash for load ordering (because you can CTRL + up or down, and I love hotkeys) and for its Bashed Patch. Both have priceless and unique features, so IMO it was never really a competition - having both is the only appealing option for me. Hope this helps! -
Thanks for those links, particularly to your own texture packs, and especially the snow texture. I was looking for exactly that, and hadn't found it till now. Many of my favorite locations are up in the Jerall Mountains, and they will all be prettier thanks to this. :)

Noob who wishes to learn how to mod.
Khettienna replied to KennethKarl's topic in Oblivion's Classic Discussion
IMO, your best bet in that case is to pick up the Game of the Year Edition. It's the most cost-effective way to get both vanilla & Shivering Isles, plus comes with Knights of the Nine, and it's already patched. When I replaced my D2D versions, that's what I did, and found it for sale online for $25 US. Was totally worth the investment to have good copies on disc, have SI, and never have to worry about patching. Shivering Isles alone will give you many more hours of new content, and you can also check out some of the big quest mods. The Lost Spires is definitely my favorite in that category. -
*hopes also for an HGEC version* :D

Noob who wishes to learn how to mod.
Khettienna replied to KennethKarl's topic in Oblivion's Classic Discussion
Could be a few things. If you have Windows Vista, and Oblivion is installed somewhere inside the Program Files directory, you will need to reinstall it outside of that. Many people use c:\Games\Oblivion or just c:\Oblivion, but it doesn't matter so long as it's not anywhere inside Program Files. Mods will not run in games of an earlier version than the Construction Set they were made with, so it is vital that you have the latest patch. Find your Oblivion.exe in Windows Explorer, right-click on it, and choose Properties from the context menu. From the window that appears, click on the Version tab. If your version number isn't 1.2.0.416, you need a patch. The three most common reasons you cannot patch are: You are running Windows Vista and it is installed in Program Files, or your copy of the game is not legitimate (even No CD cracks will prevent patching), or you have a non-standard installation (such as from Direct2Drive). You know what to do if the first or second is true. If the third is true, you need to get the patch from the vendor. I know for sure Direct2Drive has it, and their version is the only one that will work if you bought the game from them. Hope this helps! -
The style is lovely! I can't wait to download and dress up in the final results. :)

If you have OBSE, OBMM will automatically detect this and launch the game with OBSE for you. :)
