If I were in their shoes and got approached by Bethesda and Valve to make money from mods, I'd be on board too (especially if I had some serious talent). I mean, that's Bethesda, the official developer, giving you the opportunity to make mods for a living. That's like when YouTube offered ways for Let's Players to make a living from playing and recording games. It's a dream come true, right? It's hard to turn that down when you think of it that way. Anyway, it looks like our most high-profile mod authors that entered into the deal were probably just testing the waters. If they *really* wanted to put their content behind a paywall, they would have removed all old versions of their mods. But they *didn't*. So, my guess is they were going to see how releasing a new version of their mod on Steam worked out. You know, could they make anything substantial from this? If so, could they release old versions to Nexus and just sell newest version on Steam (I know this was said to be Chesko's plan, but I never found confirmation on that). Unfortunately, it was, and still is, unclear as to whether that sort of plan would have been legally feasible.

Starting paid mods on a brand new release would have worked just fine as you wouldn't be running into nearly as many problems as you would in an established game. Who knows, maybe this is what will happen with Fallout 4/TES VI.
  3. Hurray! The program is done. That said, maybe we should start supporting our mod authors financially of our own volition more frequently. This whole debacle has really made me consider what mods I *would* have paid for without complaint. I think I'm going to donate to those mod authors. (Which is sad, you know? It took something explosive like this to make me consider donating...)

Chesko, I've loved your mods from the start and am stunned by your ability to code something so complex, so optimally. Frostfall is a great mod, perhaps your greatest. You've changed Skyrim entirely for thousands of people. So, I am sad to see you go, and I hope your hiatus is temporary. I'm also disgusted at how Valve is treating the issue--as if they now own your work. Maybe they technically do. Maybe there's some clause that assigns Valve as a "publisher", and from the gaming world, we all know how tangled copyright gets when a publisher is involved. Still, utterly disgusting what they're doing. If I'm going to pay for mods, I would rather 75% or more go to the modder than a paltry 25%. I'm paying for the modder's ability, not Valve's ability to slap something on their client or Bethesda's ability to say "Sure, you can sell it."
