  1. Hello Jones177, I plan to go through STEP .... step by step so that I know I have a proven and tested setup to base my expectations off of. I have already followed Vivid Weather's mod description for any tweaks there so I should be good to go in that regard. Seems as if I won't mess with enbseries.ini since that is what Vivid's mod author spent the most time tweaking for that preset, correct? Glad that there is one file I don't need to worry about ha. I'll definitely have to look into the EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks tweak to see how that works on my system. But I have a feeling it won't help me out much since my problem is not directly memory related. Still worth a try to help smooth the game out. STEP goes over how to setup the ProxyLibrary a bit generally but I am sure I can google for good documentation on that. I will then look into adding that in my file. How do you have your vsync setup? (through skyrim, nvidia control panel, or frame limited elsewhere) Do you use triple buffering from the nvidia settings? and lastly (for this post) what do you have set for the enb "reserved memory" and "vram memory" settings?
  2. I think that running a dual boot on separate drives should work out okay and get me the same functionality / performance as any old single boot setup. Booting into Windows 7 at start up should not really differ from your setup whether Windows 10 is also a bootable OS. (as far as i know so far) This isn't confirmed as i need to look into dual boots more. I did not try the save scalpel because I ended up creating a completely new save. There was nothing to shave off at that point  Thank you for the suggestions! Thank you for the input, I can appreciate a straight up answer like this haha. Way to be blunt and to the point. This helps me nail down why I am getting semi-low performance. My goal isn't necessarily to have 60 FPS at all times, I would rather have a solid limit set and not have the system dip below that (if the limit is 45+ that's fine). I want smooth and stable gameplay with an ENB and mods, I should be able to get that with the 980 TI @ 1080P if you are able to get 60 FPS @ 1440P ha. This discussion is helpful for getting my system in a better balance, so that the CPU and GPU compliment each other. From what I have heard it sounds like my CPU is definitely the bottleneck for Skyrim. In the back of my mind I have always known my CPU is the next system component due for an upgrade so I think that's what I'll do. I think the problem is the CPU bottleneck isn't as apparent with other modern games I have played (Witcher 3 and MGSV all ran on 'ultra' @ 60 FPS) BUT I would expect to see an improvement in stutter and less dips below 60 with a nice new Intel CPU across the board. Until getting a new CPU I will have to deal with the performance I get. I will look into the dual boot for windows 7, to find out about a possible performance boost in Skyrim and possibly other DX9 games. Would you be up for sharing some of the settings you changed in your INI files for the 980 TI setup? That may come in handy for me and others as well. If you missed it - I am running the vivid weathers mod / enb with Boris's ENB version .305 like you. I get a lot of stutter and would love to rid myself of that
  3. Hello there, I might have a vista and windows 8 disc somewhere around here hah, both of those are less than ideal though right? Found upgrade discs for Vista, 7, and 8.1. Is the process to dual boot Windows 10 and the older version possible with upgrade discs? If so, does that provide full system performance more or less? So I did go ahead and set Skyrim back down to barebones vanilla (using this restore method: http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Troubleshooting#Restore_Vanilla_Skyrim). I then started a fresh new game and went through the intro. What I found is my FPS go anywhere from 40 - 200... after using "coc riverwood" and not moving, i get around 43 FPS. Kinda baffling but it must be the OS and/or CPU doing crazy things.... Really unfortunate! EDIT: Could anyone running Skyrim on Windows 10 confirm or deny that my system is an outlier??
  4. Hi Tadream, Ha, no I did not know that there was such a low limit for VRAM under Windows 10! Thank you for letting me know. That could be cause for alarm once I install many more texture mods but right now my VRAM hardly exceeds 2500 MB.
  5. Hello Amethystumn, Thanks again for your input on this issue. I went on ahead and downloaded Boris's ENBoost file and used that to overwrite my old enb ini. I also followed his instructions on the nexus concerning certain settings. I got a performance boost of around 7-10 fps in Whiterun, that brought the FPS to about 45.... BUT what I found was his new ini file actually turned off all enb graphical enhancements .... So in reality the change did not help. I went into the file changed the 2 lines that re-enable enb graphics (currently set to: UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics=false, UseDefferedRendering=true) now I am back to my original FPS of about 35-50 in 'heavy' cities and forests. One thing is i set: ReservedMemorySizeMb=512 and VideoMemorySizeMb=6000, I now am getting my old stutter back (only when moving and every ~5 seconds it seems) and no boost to performance. So perhaps i need to tweak those some more to get smooth play. Something i did got my RAM usage to shoot up from around 3200 all the way to 5000+ but this did not come with any performance boost. I will try running in a windowed fullscreen to see what happens, but when i tried that in the past i found it nullified Nvidia's control panel settings. Worth looking into more though! In summary, I have not been able to figure out why I am getting sub 45 FPS in cities and <= 60 FPS in heavy forests / high npc areas. I will most likely end up reinstalling everything (minus the OS) and take notes on performance from pure vanilla and then as I add back in the enb and mods. I am feeling there is a high chance that the issue is either my cpu or just skyrim engine limitations. There is a slight chance that some weird settings or scripts are bogging everything down though. What I ask now is can someone comment on my mod list and the load order, does anything stick out? Am I suffocating my CPU in heavy script calls? Also, how can i get skyrim to run without v-sync, I want to see how high the FPS get for a benchmark (this will not be for playing the game haha). I tried setting iPresentInterval = 0 in the skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini in my documents, but no dice. ENB and nvidia vsync was set to false / no as well
  6. I'm sorry I can't offer up a solution for you yet, but I wanted to post that I have a very similar system and am running into Skyrim performance problems in cities much like you. The thing is I am getting even lower performance in places like Whiterun versus you without running JK's city mod. This may be due to my worse CPU (amd 8320 @ 4.1) Are you running on Windows 10? How many other mods are you running? (posting your full mods list may be helpful) I have a similar post on this forum, if i find out anything revolutionary I will let ya know. Good luck!
  7. This post can be disregarded / removed... is now a duplicate of: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/3927265-low-performance-when-playing-skyrim-with-mods/ Hello guys and gals! I had posted on the generic nexus forums and realized this question belongs on here, so I will try and transfer over to this new post. Here is the original post: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/3927265-low-performance-when-playing-skyrim-with-mods/ If you have the time and the knowledge, it would be great if i could have everyone read through what was already said and then post here. The problem is that my mid/high end machine is struggling to run a moderately modded Skyrim. In the previous post I provided my system specs, mod list, and settings tweaks I have tried so far with no results. The same still applies, but I want to get this communities input as well. I can provide any information people need in this thread.
  8. Hello! Do you run an ENB? My recommendations will change if you do, otherwise: Have you ran LOOT to sort your mods and also cleaned dirty plugins with the program Tes5Edit? Also, there are stability mods that have helped me out. One of them I found to be helpful is: Safety Load. You will need to have SKSE installed and then run your game through the SKSE launcher. If none of this makes sense lemme know.
  9. I read your edit and agree with you that ENBoost may help, in the past I went through the enblocal.ini file and made some changes to increase performance. Changes I made were the ones recommended by Realvision ENB (they claim the tweaks take the place of ENBoost) However, I will add the official ENBoost file from nexus and make sure that i have used all available tweaks from the ENBoost mod description on nexus. My stutter isn't very bad anymore due to some change i had made last night (not sure exactly what, but perhaps it was forcing on triple buffering through nvidia control panel) I still think there is some incompatibility or some badly set settings that are causing this slowdown. I may just bite the bullet and do a complete restart / reinstall of everything (minus the OS, I'm stuck with that..) to see what my performance is at vanilla. Then I can slowly add mods and tweaks to see what may be causing the problem. I was really hoping to avoid going that very time consuming route . I'm also going to try exiting steam and MSI afterburner to see if that helps.
  10. I have skse_loader.exe and skse_steam_boot.exe as well as skyrim_launcher.exe and tesv.exe added to the control panel. I guess I can simply change the settings for all 4 of them to make sure the settings stick. Thanks! So any more ideas why I would be getting such low FPS? Seems to be a definite hit in cities.. I have the mod list attached to my 2nd post. (it's short a few texture mods)
  11. Done and done haha, I have LOOT run after I install or uninstall new mods. I also make sure everything is cleaned up with Tes5Edit. Both should be up to date. I can also post ini files which i have changed. Screenshots that detail Usages and FPS: Riverwood: http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/477752250543780689/AAD3F61A53329EC8D65BA1958A84D0738173CD37/ Whiterun: http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/477752250543780432/3D3E6F2866C157F654AF397323870D545A881A71/ Some Forest: http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/477752250543779618/17E949292D41CEA9C508103E354022DB2DC27BE2/ (sorry it's hard to see the OSD overlay)
  12. Windows 10 is probably a bigger drain than I think, but the system should have more than enough RAM and CPU core threads to handle the OS ( i hope  but not sure ) I will include my mod list in an attachment on this post in a moment! I have what i think is a decent, yet not huge amount of texture mods that equal or exceed 2K resolution. The funny thing about that is my VRAM usage stays well below 3,000 MB and the card has twice that amount of memory. Could it be the memory clock can't keep up?? Or perhaps the CPU isn't feeding the GPU fast enough. I do believe I have a healthy amount of script heavy mods, see attached for the full list. Thank you for the tip! Currently I have nvidia V-Sync set to adaptive for "Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, TESV.exe" in the control panel. I will need to enable triple buffering. Does running the SKSE launcher from steam still use the TESV.exe? I don't quite get how that all works with steam, skse, the skyrim launcher, and the skyrim.exe Skyrim's V-Sync has been on as well, I mentioned trying to turn it off only to get a better idea of where my FPS were at. That didn't work out so I turned the setting back on immediately. I feel this as well. I checked the CPU usage while in-game and noticed that the usage never exceeded 30%. That includes Windows and other background processes. I do realize that Skyrim can at most use 4 cores and not all of those cores will run at a perfect ~100%, but I'm not sure why Skyrim wouldn't have it closer to 50% usage for an 8 core CPU. I have overclocked this processor to nearly as high as i can get it stable at stock volts. I'm sure an i5 or an i7 would boost the performance, yet i also feel that the overclocked 8320 shouldn't hold the system back as much as it is.... Maybe more research is needed. I have gone through with about half of the tweaks mentioned in that stability guide. Haven't messed with Wyre Bash or some of the more odd tweaks. Maybe worth a shot though. I haven't experienced a CTD since starting a new save, crossing my fingers on that. Used to get them all the time. I do get stutters and tearing as well (which is odd). Triple buffer may help. I am using ENB version 3.05, or whatever the latest version called for by vivid weathers ENB is ha. I have changed some enb ini settings that supposedly help but haven't downloaded a specific enb boost file.
  13. First time poster, I'm hoping this is a good place for this. I've done a fair bit of research and tweaking but haven't found a satisfying answer.. So my "problem" is what I personally perceive to be a mid-high end PC producing less than expected FPS for a modded Skyrim. I would love if someone knowledgeable on the subject could put in their 2 cents on whether or not this is normal. I use an ENB (new vivid weathers mod and enb preset) and have around 80 other various mods at the moment. Specs: AMD 8320 @ 4.1 Ghz << i have a feeling this may be part of the issue EVGA GTX 980 ti @ 1136(core) and 1760(memory) 16 GB DDR3 @ 1600 HDD Windows 10 Game runs at 1080P So I can't seem to uncap the frame limiter in the ini files (iPresentInterval = 0 produces no results) to get an overall average but my FPS vary wildly. I am experiencing dips below 40 fps just outside of riverwood and in other 'high asset' areas. I seem to get close to 60 in general outside but it likes to bounce around 50 to 60+ fps causing vsync to turn on and off a lot. interiors are a solid 60+ fps though. My goal and expectation is for this setup to get me a solid 60+ FPS with no stutter or tearing everywhere. Hopefully I'm not crazy in that regard ;) I can provide much more detailed information but wanted to see if anyone is up for a discussion on this. Thank you everyone!
