Whats your modding background?

I'm a total modding noob. I've never modded anything before, though I did download and tinker with the SDK for CoD4. The tools for that are a bit opaque for a novice, though.

The G.E.C.K. is pretty inviting, and I'm starting to get the hang of it (having just finished the Vault 74 tutorials) so I think I might get my feet wet on this one.

My interest in modding is a result of a long series of discussions with friends about the shortfalls of games (especially the great ones) coupled with the realization (or perhaps quixotic determination) that I might be able to do something about it.

I'm particularly eager to get ahold of a L4D SDK and iron out some balance issues, but that's another matter.

In the meantime, I have some big dreams for some Fallout mods that will likely never see completion. Gonna start small with one modeled on my house and room-mates. Hopefully, at least that one will see its finish. We'll see about the rest.

Ladies and Gentlemen, GodofAlcohol.

Nothing special. I didn't do any modding beforehand, and I'm still a newbie in Fallout3-modding.

I just wanted to enhance my game and as I found many very cool mods, I waited for the GECK and started modding myself.

So I when I feel the need for something in the game, I try to make a mod for it and as I've installed some cool mods I want to share my mods, too.

I would love to see a more powerful editing-enviroment (yeah, the source-code would be real cool) ;)

Modding the AI / AI-routines would be absolutely awesome... just dreaming...

So basically I'm a guy sniffing around in the forums, getting help, giving help and tinkering with everything I got with the GECK.

My modding history isn't so much programming and editing as it was Beta testing

I was the guy that my modding friends came to test out their mods.

List of Games I beta'd mods for

Command and Conquer Red Alert 2

Command and Conquer Generals

Command and Conquer Zero Hour

World in Conflict

Half Life

Half Life 2(This is by far the largest reaching almost 100 different mods from massive to miniature)

Games I tried to Mod but Failed from Frustration

Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun-It was WAY too complicated for me to jump in and I got overwhelmed almost immediately

Half Life 2-I swear the Source SDK was just trying to piss me off, my favorite game of all time and the modding tool was that stingy and annoying that I basically gave it the finger and stuck with beta testing

On side note about that, I was really excelling at the time with Google Sketchup which made me come to the realization that if a company based their modding tools of Sketchup, it would be the most user friendly thing ON EARTH!

Games I'm Successfully Getting into Modding

Fallout 3-I F***ING LOVE G.E.C.K! This is the kind of modding tool I'm talking about :D

I start out with i ummm lol i forgot the game's name it was a 2d game runs on DOS

you get to be a bunny and run around avoiding a dog or a wolf or something, that was way back when i was

2yrs old, my dad teach me how to make the bunny moves 8x faster lol.

I never really got crazy over modding stuff since people already did it for me [thx all ppl in modding communities!]

I usually just generate maps on War2 then Starcraft then War3 then I did some stuff on CS before steam takes over

and this was on Local area and on a server that was running in my home country.

when I got into US, started modding morrowind, then oblivion.

then when FO3 came out played it, finished it, got bored, got mad...

now making a balancing mod to make damage more realistic.

used to do scripting, but after 3 months visit back to my home country i totally forgot how to script....

all i remember is placeatme command lol XD

I don't really have much of a story to tell.

My professional background is what people would consider "uneducated" - The only education I've completed so far is highschool and a one year course in digital design, during which I learned the basics of Flash animation, Photoshopping and 3d modelling. I spent two years attending the Informatics eduction at the University, through which I learned how to program C# and a truckload about software development and project management, however due to failing a single course, I've had to take a break from studying until I decide whether I want to resume the persuit of an academic education or do something different with my life. I've been thinking about taking a formal education in technical 3D design (ie. CAD) instead, but at the moment I'm just having fun modding and building a decent 2D and 3D portfolio... and being a jobless artist. :P

As for modding, whenever a game ships with a game editor, or otherwise easily accessible modding tool, I always give it a try to see if it's something that interests me... which it rarely is, as I usually enjoy blowing other people up in-game rather than make something nice for them and then blowing them up. :D

The first "real" mod I made was a set of clan skins for C&C: Renegade during my highschool years, which essentially was just a recoloring of most of the basic models using an old version of Paintshop I found flipping through my father's CD-Roms. It was a pretty simple thing, though it taught me a lot on how to use digitial image editing programs and basically was one of the reasons I even got interested in making "digital" art. Later, when Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy was out, I reskinned and remodelled a few of the vanilla models, by Frankensteining them together and making new skins based on the vanilla textures also by basically cutting and pasting vanilla skins together into new and interesting outfits. I've also fiddled with mapmaking on various RTS games and what have you, as well as a bit of Neverwinter Nights module making, but it never really got so serious as to hold my interest for long.

Since then I haven't really been modding a whole lot, though for Morrowind I made my own little home in the Morrowind CS (as well as properly furnishing the Fighter's Guild Master's room for my own purposes) and mucked about a bit in the Oblivion CS but nothing serious or publicly released. However after having played through Fallout 3 I realized I was pretty much in love with the game and I made the decision of beginning modding again. My productivity, or at least my release rate, hasn't exactly been stellar so far, but it's still a learning process I'm going through and I'm still very much "wet" behind the ears when it comes to modding. Hopefully, when I'm done with my current project, I can move on from just building items to help build worlds as part of a larger modding crew, though that's still something that's somewhere out in the future.
