My game randomly crashes to desktop with no error message. This usually happens when I'm outside and rarely happens in an exterior cell. I was thinking that it might be a memory issue, but I'm not sure. I can play sometimes for an hour and sometimes for 5 minutes before it randomly crashes. Do I have any mods that conflict or is it something else entirely?

I've used BOSS to sort out my load order, although I tweaked it a bit since it didn't get some things quite right.

It's been going on for awhile to be honest. Maybe a month or two. It's really the reason that I haven't been playing Skyrim much.

Really? Are you just pretending like you have a problem so you can post that you are running TWO GTX 690s? (said the girl with the single 9800 GT :rolleyes: )

 

Here are a few reasons for random exterior crashes:

You may run out of memory (game is limited to just over 3 gb) due to additions of LOD, ugrids, critter/NPC spawns, etc.

You may walk into a cell that contains an error from a mod (or corrupt save)

You may run into a trigger that requires a missing masterfile or other information that is missing from your save.

You might be running into hardware-related issues (exceeding available memory, overheating, etc.) This seems less likely in your case.

 

The problem is, the more you play with such an error the more deeply it may become embedded in your savegames.

If you are looking at a corrupt save issue, you may be out of luck, though if you can identify specific areas where you crash, you may be able to avoid them.

If you are exceeding the game's memory limit, you may have to pull back a bit on tweaks, choose lower-res options of texture mods, etc.

 

If you haven't used BOSS, I would recommend that. Not only will it order your mods, but it will give you a lot of useful information that may help you solve the problem. You can also select ONLY the "perform trial run" option to see what BOSS would do and get those useful messages without making any actual load order changes.

If the problem happens to be missing files from the vanilla skyrim, using steam's "verify cache file" might fix it. This will revert all your game settings and many of your .ini settings to the default, so if you decide to try this you will want to back those up somewhere else, so it is easy to fix.

 

Finally-- it is possible that the problem is being caused by some other program in your computer using up your computer's resources, or pulling rank with a higher priority. You might check your computer's system logs and see if there is something happening of that nature just before the crash.

A fellow forum lurker known as naxx06 assisted me in discerning the cause of CTD's with the following advice:

Open your skyrim.ini in Documents > My Games > Skyrim > and add these lines under Papyrus

 

bEnableLogging=1
bEnableTrace=1
bLoadDebugInformation=1

 

After your crash you should see a folder called "logs" (in the same skyrim folder) and thats where your logs should be but its all in notepad form so you gotta copy the texts and paste it on a wordpad so it'll be easier to read.
