BrotherShamus
I hope this is the appropriate forum. I had a really stable load order in my SSE and about 30 hours in... it broke. The LODs stopped working, I had floating artifacts, broken animations, etc. I decided to try to fix the LODs first and when I tried to launch the Texgen tool, it told me I had to first establish the game registries by launching the game through Steam. I know I recently had a Windows update and I'm guessing Steam updated as well (not sure how to check that) but I've never had this happen before and I'm not sure how to go forward with trouble-shooting without tearing down my game and starting over. I've got copies of my ini files so if I launch my game through Steam, can I just overwrite the 'new' (vanilla) ini files with the ones I made or will that break something? Also, is there a way to prevent updates in the future? It took me months to put this all together and I would hate to have to start again. Also, is there any way to save my mods/plugins in Vortex so if; in the worst case scenario, I have to format my PC, I don't have to download everything again? Sorry for the length of this... kinda frazzled over here. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
wfandrews
You can validate your files by this method. First delete appcache in the Steam directory also Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini in documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition. Don't worry about appcache, it is where Steam holds details about your current game, which is why we want to delete it, otherwise it will install those details next time you start your game. Then shut your computer down for ten or so minutes, Get a cup of coffee or something. This will let any hooks reset. Start your computer and validate your master files. After that is completed launch SSE from Steam, this will create the files you have deleted but they will be vanilla. If you made any changes to your ini files or cleaned your Update and DLC esms you will have to do so again. I have always thought that it was better to redo the changes I made to my ini rather than overwrite with a saved ini. I have no real basis for this, just my personal feeling. What I have just described is usually one of the first things I try after my game all of a sudden starts acting wonky after being stable for hours. Of course there is no guarantee that this will solve your problem but I feel it is worth a try. I also just had a major Windows10 update, and Steam is constantly making Steam Client updates but so far they have not affected my games. Which, of course means nothing when it comes to your computer.
BrotherShamus
Awesome... thanks! I'll give this a go tonight. So deleting the appcache will allow me to continue my play through? edit: went ahead and tried it... after an hour of gameplay, it seems all is well. Thanks again!
