Remodeling mannequins

Recommended Posts

Let me put it like this. I have arachnophobia and I actually don't mind Skyrim spiders (I've even installed this mod and I'm doing fine. Mostly).

However, mannequins are seriously out of the question. I had no idea how much this thing could creep me out until I've seen it. Especially when they're moving. Ugh.

So I'd like to create a mannequin model that isn't resembling a body at all. More like a simple rack to hang your outfit on, or a hanger, or a cross or something. And I'd like to replace all mannequin models in the world with that one.

How can I go about doing that?

A walking cross would be creepy too. Mannequins are basically NPCs so if you'll be able to replace an NPC model with a rack it will be great though we need to hear opinions from more experienced people. Icecreamassassin told me he tried every possible way to replace mannequins with racks but I don't know about replacing models with a rack. Might work.

Thank you for the information :)

I guess moving is inevitable if there are too many of them... I haven't seen a mod yet that can successfully prevent them from walking around.

So perhaps only mesh edits could be done? Like, instead of a body, the only thing visible would be a rack, but the body-defining bones are still there so when it's "dressed" the outfit is shaped according to the body?

And then there is the matter of body differences (male/female)...

Or instead of an NPC body, a panel! Like a display, and every piece of outfit appears like it would when dropped on the ground.

I'm playing with my armory mod for over a week and placed almost all the armors on my 40+ mannequins. No movement.

Anyway, you can change the body first to anything else and see how it goes. I'm quite interested because Skyrim definitely needs an overhaul of mannequins and racks.

Ok, I know what should be done, but I'm not skilled enough to do it. First of all, I don't know how to create meshes.

What I need is a wooden grid roughly the size of a mannequin, shaped like a screen (or a panel, what have you). Preferably with little metal hooks nailed into it for visual impression for hanging stuff on them.

Assuming CK is capable of such a thing, I'd assign placeable spots on it for headgear, body armor, boots, gloves, cape, and possibly other slots like separate pants since some armors have them. Perhaps even a hanger for jewelry? Meshes that would fit those placeables should have the suffix ...go.nif because inventory model of the armor should be on display, not the one worn like it would on a mannequin.

And then I would basically replace all the mannequins with this outfit display. It wouldn't be an NPC-based object, instead it would have the function of a display panel, something like in this mod.

Take a peek at JK's Palace of the Kings, or JK's Warmaiden's interiors. There are simple cross-style racks that hold static versions of the various armors on them. While this is something JK has done in the creation kit, if you use a positioner mod like Jaxonz, it wouldn't be hard to just install the static posts (or display boards, tbh) and then use the positioner mod to stick whichever armors to it that you'd like. Here's some stuff I've done with the noble dividers and cupboard backers, in the past.

Great job 3nrim! This will do wonderfully until I turn them into racks

Awesome catch, thank you! I'll look into those and see if I can replicate them. The one in Warmaiden's would be better I think, because it takes up less space, although the one in the Palace of the Kings looks so neat with separate platforms for boots and gauntlets... Time to tinker.

Your stuff looks great too, I'll check out the Positioner. Does it work in-game or do I use CK? I mean, I'd like to make a permanent change that will affect any playthrough.

Edit: I took a look at the contents of JK Warmaiden's mod and I see that all the items on outfit racks are statics. Adding real outfit parts onto the racks could prove a bit complicated (if possible at all). I'll try.

The positioner works in game, so you can decorate on the fly. I do that in all my Hearthfire homes, because building any component adds many other components that I don't want. You could install the racks with CK, then use the positioner to apply whatever armor ground models you'd like. They'll be affixed to it, but you'll still be able to "take," if you want to wear it. If you use the SSE port of Jaxonz, you want the 2.0 version, not the newer ones. That one is still working ok. If you prefer something that doesn't require SKSE, there's also CDCooley's Decorator Helper, which also works in game. Jaxonz uses mostly the num pad, Cooley's uses spells.

The Warmaidens ones are mostly static, but I think they're changing because the ones in the Palace of the Kings still have "take...armor" available to me, when I go through. If you wanted to make something that would take the item like a mannequin, without having to use a positioner, I think it would involve custom activators like the ones on a weapon or shield rack. If I recall correctly, there are some custom elder scroll and dragon claw displays in a few of the popular home mods, like Eli's Breezehome and Darkfox127's Caranthir Tower, which may shed some light on things.

Here's a youtube tutorial from Darkfox about custom display cases. You may have to tinker with the orientation of any armor mesh that goes on, though.
