Just go to the directory "C:\Users\YOURUSER\AppData"

or type %appdata% into your explorer.

Then search for "Nexus" in all folders in Appdata.

Just delete all Nexus Mod Manager related files and

it's like you reinstalled the nexus mod manager.

Please be careful to just delete related files.

I'm just posting this in case somebody else googles this problem like myself.

I FINALLY GOT IT AND I'M REALLY STUPID WITH COMPUTERS!!!

The error message says skyrim.esm is missing in Program Files(x86) > steam > SteamApps >downloading > 72850 > Data

Well like SerfT said

location of skyrim.esm and mods/dlcs is

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Data

These are two different folders and NMM wants the esm files in the Data folder for 72850.

So simply copy and paste all files from

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Data

to

Program Files(x86) > steam > SteamApps >downloading > 72850 > Data

IT WILL WORK AND IT'S COMMON SENSE TOO. NMM WANTS esm files in a SPECIFIC folder so might as well copy all the esm files to the SPECIFIC folder.

Hope I helped I was bogged down with problem too

I did all the steps but when I went to 72850 it wasn't there I had 3 other numbers to chose from 22380 377160 489830 not sure what to do

First of all, you should not install Steam or NMM in the program files directory because that will cause UAC issues. Your esm file should be in (whereever you installed steam\steam\steamaps\common\skyrim\data

I had this issue as well but I figured it out. you need to manually move the skyrim folder out of wherever you keep it (probably in steam app>common). after that you kneed to reinstall skyrim and before it is done reinstalling you need to put the skyrim folder back and then verify your game folders by right clicking on skyrim and going to common files. after that cancle the download for skyrim but don't uninstall it.

this fixed it for me and I wanted to share this because it doesn't look like their has been a solution like this one.

So this is weird, i have reinstalled skyrim now to default 17 times, with mods and no mods, and am always missing one file, i downloaded skse now missed two files, ran validate files in steam, only one file was replaced, still missing that one file, no matter what i do, what tips I followed, what youtube videos I have watched and went through step by step, that one file is still missing, now here is the odd thing, its suppose to install said missing file after running validate file integrity, however even though i saw a clear spike in the download page on steam, that file is still missing, now one thinks its being installed in the wrong file directory, however, not knowing which file is missing, its hard to determine what should be done about it. I looked for software, launchers, different mod managers, and even went as far as to ask a friend for a copy of his skyrim folder to see any differences in mine. its been about 9 days now, i got it to launch but now as soon as the fog get on the menu in game before the menu comes up it crashes to desktop. 0.0 so even though i got past not launching at all, its still missing an important file if it is not one file it is another. for goodness sake I would just like an easy way out at this point, to fix it. is there supposed to be a "Skyrim.BSA" only have the esm.

any ideas?

It is a legal version bought from steams store. Skyrim not legendary or special edition. The mods are from nexus or steam workshop. Load orders have been confirmed to be in correct load order. Bug fixes and unofficial patches has been explored. Anti virus disabled and plus exceptions have been set even on windows defender, admin permissions have also been made permanent. A search for duplicates have also been made, virus scans plus restart system safe mode virus scans have been made to insure it is not a virus related issue. C++ - directx version + VCRedist has been confirmed by 4th party to be correct and accounted for.
